This has been my family’s favorite place for special occasions, everything has always been perfect until last night. Salad was rushed to the table before we were finished with the appetizers, the prime rib was tough and underwelming taste wise. The service and overall experience was still very good as always and other than the prime rib the other dishes were excellent

Prime rib was A+, potatoes were fantastic. Solid rocks pour on the single malt scotch at a good price. They waive corking fee on your first bottle which was really awesome. Service was great as well, Amy was clearly a veteran bartender that cares about her guests. As a long time service industry worker and restaurant manager that walked in late on a random night, they knocked it out of park!

J Alexander’s is a great birthday place. The food is always awesome. The servers are very attentive and everyone is treated well. My only complaint is that apparently you have to Ask for bread? Dinner for 2 easily exceeds $ 100, so why are they skimping on the bread??? At the Very least, the server should ask if you want bread.

The food is good, but the drinks are better. The bartenders took great care of me this evening. Would definitely come back.

Okay, so it’s a national chain featuring American classics including prime rib of beef, steaks, fresh seafood, sandwiches and entrée salads… But the atmosphere is upscale yet relaxed, service is excellent, and at least in KC the steaks are awesome. Add a great glass of Predator Old Vine Zin, heavily loaded baked potato, and tangy caesar salad and I’m all in for the next 1 – 2 hours. Just try not to say yummmmm while you savor that steak, I dare you. ;)

J. Alexander’s offers consistently good food served by a very capable wait staff. It’s a bit pricier than several options in the area, but you will likely be getting better food for the money here. We have had both steaks and seafood and have had good luck with both. A great addition to the KC restaurant scene!

Wait staff was really nice. As a former server I could definitely tell they worked as a team. If my glass was empty the first person walking by filled my cup. About the food. It was definitely very good. I have been here several times and I typically get the prime rib but on my most recent trip I got the KC strip. It was very dry. I order my steak medium well, so I always expect a drier steak, but this was extremely dry. The potato soup was AMAZING. It had more cheese than I wanted but most people like a bunch of cheese so it was cool. And I can never go here without ordering the carrot cake. It’s so yummy! Worth every penny!

I really could not love this place more… I have never had anything but wonderful meals here. The crab cakes and prime rib are a couple of my favorites and the pear martini’s go down really easy.

I have been here twice, once for dinner and once for a work lunch. Bring your wallet and expect to pay quite a bit when you eat here. Service if excellent, if your glass is half full they will have a full one ready and waiting. They are fairly knowledgeable on gluten free items, the chef or the manager will come out and speak with you about your allergy and what you can and cannot eat. The salad portion is small-if you order a salad as an entrée. I ordered the filet caeser and it was the size of a side salad and cost $ 21. The steak is cooked well, tender and flavored nicely. If you have a hard time seeing and require glasses, good luck seeing your menu. The place is VERY dimly lit-the people I have eaten with have to take out the phone flashlights to read the menu. I recommend reservations even for lunch time, we went on a Friday for a face to face interview with a potential employee and the establishment was busy. You can’t go wrong with anything on the menu-I stick to the filet.

I had dinner with my boss last night and the food was excellent as usual but this review is more about the staff! We stayed at a local hotel close by and took a nightmare of a taxi ride over to J’s…it took 10⁄10 taxi forever to pick us up and then the driver didn’t have a clue where it was so I helped him get the 4 blocks! We called the same taxi co to get back and they never showed. While we waited in disgust Becky the manager got involved with the calling to no avail, she finally got on her Über app and put it on her account($ 8) they were there in 5 minutes. She wouldn’t take our money to repay her but we left $ 15 with the hostess to give to her later! Kudos to the staff and especially BECKY! Thanks again!!!

I met some family for lunch at J. Alexander’s today. I’ve been there before but have never tried the steak. I have only had one steak at a restaurant that was worth the expense so I rarely order it. This time was no different for me, I ordered the steak burger which was ground beef tenderloin and ribeye. It was cooked correctly and tasted good. The sauteed onions were a little overpowering but the rest of the«dressings» were very nice… and the shoestring fries are delicious. Not the very best burger I’ve ever had but it was good enough that I would buy it again even at the steakhouse price. My wife ordered the sirloin steak salad which is the reason I decided to write this review. With a typical steak salad, it seems like the steak is pre-cut into bite size pieces then cooked and placed on top of a salad. Usually the steak doesn’t have much flavor and the tenderness is what you would expect from a very cheap steak. This was not the case today. She shared some of her steak with me and I was extremely impressed. This was a case where the steakhouse finally came through on their specialty. It appeared like they had grilled the steak, then cut it up,(which is what I would expect in the first place). It was cooked to perfection, it was juicy, the flavor was far better than expected, and the tenderness was perfect. For a lunchtime salad, it certainly exceeded my expectations. Next time I go there, I probably will actually try the steak. The other thing about J. Alexander’s is that they have probably the very best carrot cake in Kansas City. Ok, I haven’t tried it everywhere, but I get around enough. We decided on getting half to go, so they warmed up half on a plate and brought the other half in a box. Never disappointed with the texture of the cake, the amount of frosting, and how excellent the frosting is(it’s the best part). I was hesitant to give the fourth star because the server was a three star server mostly because of her lack of attention. However, she was friendly and her absence didn’t take away from the meal(except for the lack of refills).

Ok, as a restaurant professional, I rarely use Unilocal because I know how one sided a single snapshot of a restaurant can be. That said, 2 years ago I had a really rough first experience at this J. Alexander’s; so much so that I wrote a very strong negative review of this restaurant’s bar service. In the last 6 months, I have been back twice: once for dinner and once for drinks at the bar. On both occasions, the service, food, and ambiance were spectacular! Every restaurant can have an off night or a team member that has an off night(I have had plenty of them). I am going to chalk my first experience at this J’s to that, an off night. This restaurant is fantastic: the people are friendly, the ambiance is amazing, the management team has done a great job maintaining the facility, the service has been great, and the food is exceptional! This is the restaurant that I remember enjoying so much when I lived in Nashville. Thank you for doing such a great job. please keep up the great work. It would be remiss of me not to mention our bartender last night: thank you Chelsea! My wife and I were having a rough day. We came in late and had 1 drink each(a manhattan off your specialty drink list and a glass of wine). You were kind, friendly, answered all of our questions pleasantly and enthusiastically, and you were a great reflection on your company. We appreciated the service, and I hope you are recognized by your management team for doings such a great job! Kudos to the entire team for having a full bar and a full restaurant at 8PM on a Monday night. Your guests recognize your efforts. Thanks again for doing such a great job. I truly feel bad about leaving that first negative review!

Ordered house made guacamole & the vegetable plate. Both were good. I’d have preferred the basket of accompanying chips not be so fragmented. The vegetable plate came with an option of tomatoes instead of the cold pasta dish. I enjoyed all the vegetables, but a tuber would have been nice too.

What can I say besides damn damn damn. From the start of our meal with the spinach queso, to our house salads then the stars of the meal, titillating meat. I ordered the prime rib and my business partner ordered the strip steak. I’m a sucker for prime rib but I have to admit the strip steak was better. Not to say the prime rib wasn’t good but the strip hit the spot. Both steaks came out perfectly prepared and was well seasoned. Anytime I am in the KS market this is a must eat.

We ended up here on Valentine’s Day, which might have been a mistake given that it’s only one of the busiest«date nights» of the year, and J. Alexander’s certainly delivers on ambiance, but, to my surprise, the service was still outstanding and the food was cooked to perfection. I had the Ahi Tuna Steak and my fiancé had the filet. LOVED the combination of interesting flavors in the sauces! My fiancé is hard to please when it comes to steaks, but he explained it was the best he’s had, hands down. And then there’s the key lime pie. The«drop the mic — there’s nothing left to say» key lime pie. If you’re looking for the best dessert in KC and you love Key Lime Pie ~ THIS is your place!

We met some friends for dinner here, this is an old time favorite for both couples. We really enjoy that they don’t have a corkage fee, so you can bring that bottle of wine that you’ve been saving for a nice meal and enjoy it without the extra fee. We didn’t see anything in the appetizer menu that was too interesting so we went straight to the salad course. You can’t get a better salad than the Alex’s salad, and that is what everyone enjoyed. The only disappointment was that they don’t serve the honey drizzled croissants anymore. When we inquired they said that they were too labor intensive for the kitchen. They also commented that when they did a test, they found that their appetizer sales increased dramatically when they didn’t offer the bread. My suggestion is to put them on the menu as an appetizer or side, I’d gladly pay to have them back! Both guys ordered the prime rib and both girls ordered the filet. They do such an awesome job with their steaks here and they went well with the wines that we had brought. The side dishes are also worth mentioning, I had the sautéed spinach and my friend had the rice with wheat berries which was amazing. I went home and found the copycat recipe for the rice; I can’t wait to make it. We finished the evening sharing two deserts, the chocolate cake and the carrot cake. Both were good, but my vote goes to the moist and rich carrot cake with the most awesome cream cheese frosting. We thoroughly enjoyed our evening and had excellent service.

This is one of our favorite upscale KC area restaurants! Patrons are often greeted with an open door and welcome by a hostess. We keep coming back for the swank cozy atmosphere, friendly service, excellent food, and the big bonus… premium martinis come with a spiffy side car! We did have to send the fries back this visit because they weren’t fresh, otherwise our meals were delish! This is the only nice restaurant we frequent that doesn’t take reservations or call aheads for seating. They don’t have to, they’re that good!

This place gets better and better! My latest visit included some mind blowing deviled eggs piled high and topped with crispy little strips of bacon, a Caesar side salad with homemade croutons, and trio of spicy shrimp tacos. I loved every bite. And I felt absolutely pampered by the service. Can’t wait to come back again!
