I drive up famished and trying to satisfy my craving for burger and fries after driving about 6 miles down 85 to check out Whataburger and see if or how it compares or is related to the Whataburgers out west – banking on the high rating here on Unilocal – to find an old school setup complete with outdated but serviceable drive through menu. The lady taking care of customers took a few minutes to take my order even though they seemed pretty slow inside and there were no cars ahead of me or waiting on their food. I ordered cheese fries, a double burger with cheese, and a «pup»(hot dog). I pull up to pay and my payment was processed relatively promptly. From that point I waited about 10+ minutes for my order to come out. I heard a gentleman inside say«what the hell is going on back here!?» and then food started coming out. I wish I could say what came out was spectacular but unfortunately my order was an assortment of hits and misses. My fries though hot and fried perfectly came with soft near liquid cheese product. This is a big pet peeve of mine. If you’re offering cheese fries, put a slice or shredded cheese up on the fried potatoes. Don’t hand me a little cup of gross liquid cheese product(nacho cheese?). If I wanted nacho cheese I could order nachos for which this kind of cheese product might be found to be acceptable. However, on my fries, absolutely not. My nacho cheese fries came in a bag and most had spilled out all over in the bag. Underneath my strewn about fries was my burger. I started sampling fries and kept my foot on the brakes. About a minute or two later the lady taking care of me yells out«don’t pull off, hold on, your pup!» and walks casually over with my hot dog. I let her know I had checked the bag and knew my hd wasn’t in there and had waited in spite of my order coming out to me incomplete. She nodded and said«aha ok…». When I released the hot dog from the wrapper I found a hard, might I call it stale(?) bun with a serviceably tasty hot dog caught between it slathered in mustard and ketchup. I didn’t even eat most of the bun it was too hard. It didn’t seem like the hardness that occurs when you toast bread, it seemed like a hard stale hd bun. The only bright and shining savior in the couple of bags I received was my double burger with cheese. Pristine, delicious, exactly what I was expecting and hoping for. Perfect. If I could I would propose marriage to it or risk living in sin with it because it was so good. That said, while my burger was perfection, I’m thinking maybe Whataburger doesn’t move lots of «pups» or maybe not in the evening when I dropped by for dinner. If I order fries again I will avoid the cheese option because aside from the nacho cheese faux pas those fries were crispy and tasty, I just feel I wasted my hard earned time, money, and fast food culinary hopes and dreams(!) with these«cheese fries». The location in Prince George gets and extra half star so I hope I won’t have as so so an experience there. Burger and fries(without cheese) are four to five stars here, the hot dog – maybe a 3 which could dramatically be improved by a bun that is fresh and a bit better presentation. The service was 2 – 3 stars, I shouldn’t have to wait 10 minutes for my order in two disparate parts and then watch as two or three orders behind me get doled out lickety split. I guess I challenged the kitchen by ordering something they don’t make much of or maybe I caught them during a lull or moment of distraction. I may or may not come back but would almost say it wasn’t worth driving out here other than that slammin burger. Too bad because with a few improvements Whataburger would, at least in my eyes, be worthy of its 4+ star aggregate rating here on Unilocal.Better luck next time? :)

Closed ten minutes before the sign said it would; manager was basically like, «I put cold water on the grill, and that’s that.» Exceptionally unpleased; I won’t darken their door or driv-thru lane again, the food’s not worth that kind of experience.

Best burger in Petersburg. Double meat and cheese is the bomb. Carolina bbq fresh and mighty tasty. Everything on the menu is awesome, you got to try this place, you’ll be back.

Basic burgers, Fries, onion rings and milkshakes done right. I get a single burger with bacon, cheese, LTO, mayo. I always get fries. They have the best fries. The chocolate shake is perfect. This place is old school. It’s not fancy. No bells and whistles but it doesn’t need them with burgers that taste Like that!

Whataburger has the best hamburger/cheeseburgers in town. I got a single cheeseburger with lettuce tomato onion mayo and mustard. Cant go wrong with that!

Every time you come to the drive thru window you always get a snobbish nasty attitude from the worker. I used to frequent everyday but now I am thinking on taking my business elsewhere. You can never get a manager he’s always on the grill as they say. Be cautious folks when you go through the drive thru you are going to get a snobbish attitude

I only eat the Turkey Burger and it’s very good. Everything is made to order. It comes out hot and fresh. My family likes the cheese fries and hamburgers. The staff is friendly and helpful with ordering if your not sure what you want.

This is this is the best one in the tri-city area. Their fries are the best and their salads are banging. I mean whataburger is good but some are way better than others

HAHAHA. I thought this was a What-A-Burger from the chain down south. I was excited since I haven’t had any in a while. But this is not elated to that chain. But has a very similar taste. The burgers are bigger and cheaper. Onion rings are fresh cooked. Kind of a drive but I recommend.

My friend and I went there last weeknd and I tell you, first let me say I like the building, it look nice from the outside and clean, inside was the same., anyway, we ordered the double meat w/cheese, onion rings and fries. the food was hot and oh so good. It reminded me of the good ol days when they took orders on a clipboard! They burgers were juicy and the bun was greasy! Onion rings were hot and big, fries were hot and fried just right. If you want a good ol fashion burger this is the place and the folks that work there were nice and welcoming. I will be back with the grandkids, they need to taste a ‘real’ burger instead of McDonald’s all the time, it’s worth the drive from Richmond!

Despite the limited number of reviews, we stopped here on a recent trip to North Carolina from Northern VA. Just up the road a bit from the highway, drive past the McDonalds and get yourself a real burger cooked by the owner in full view. And if you have picky little eaters with you they have hot dogs and ketchup as a second tasty option.

Make sure you know that this place is NOT the typical chain What A Burger you see in the south! And, even though there are a couple of others in the area owned by the same people, the one in Petersburg is THE best out of all of them. I think it’s because the grill is nice and worn in. They used to have a small place on Washington St. right by the fish market across from KFC and when they first moved to the current location, the grill was all new and nothing tasted the same. Not so now! They have been there long enough to wear the grill in and give each and every burger the best flavor ever. The burgers are very round and flat, the tops of the buns are grilled, and each one is made as it is ordered. You can pretty much get what you want on it as far as condiments, but all the way is how I always get one. I don’t even really care for pickles on my burgers, but if it’s a What A Burger, everything tastes better! My mouth is watering just thinking about it! Go ahead and splurge on that diet and get a double meat with cheese, order of fries, and a shake. Mmmmm, mmmmm.
