Lather Hair Studio

All around lovely first experience at Lather Hair Studio! Made my appointment online, which was a convenience just to start. I was greeted right away upon entering this cute little shop in Brewerytown; they even offered me water, coffee or tea although Dierdra and Abbey were both with clients. Good music and comfortable atmosphere made my wait pleasant. I was early, and Abbey was right on time taking me to get started. I came in with a photo as vague inspiration, but left the reality of the haircut totally up to Abbey. She looked and and played with my hair, asking relevant questions to make sure she had a full understanding of my hairtype before getting started. I also appreciate that she explained the products she was using during the wash (DevaCurl), what she was doing during the cut and why, and a quick way to style everyday before doing the blowout. I’ve never loved a blowout this much in my life– they usually leave my hair flat on top and otherwise looking like a primped poodle– but Abbey left me with surprisingly straight, frizz-​free hair that’s lasted to the next day. Loving everything about my hair so far; Abbey really knows what she’s doing and she is an all around nice and comfortable person to interact with :) Bonus: the cut was totally affordable compared to other salons in Philadelphia and I feel like with the time and thought put into the experience, it was the best value I’ve seen so far!

Excellent hair salon! I was greeted with a yeungling and was seated right away. Abbey did a kick-​ass job of listening to what I wanted and making it a reality. I highly recommend this place for the atmosphere, quality, and price!

I CANNOT say enough good things about Lather and I’m surprised it took me this long to write them a spectacular review. The salon is clean, cozy and well decorated. As soon as you walk in you’ll feel right at home. I make my appointments for after work and I must say the fact that I am offered a glass of wine when I come in is one of my favorite parts of visiting Lather.
I was referred by a roommate to go to Abbey, who is an amazing colorist with an awesome personality! I came to her with a difficult task to take my dark brown-​brassy ombré hair to a cool blonde. After a quick consultation I trusted her right away. We developed a long term plan for my hair, but I saw great results with just one visit. On my most recent visit we took it another notch lighter, and four inches shorter, so now I can attest that Abbey’s cuts are just as great as her color.
I’m already counting down the days until my next visit to Lather!

I had a friend convince me to try this place. I usually keep my hair really short, can’t get rid of the military in me I guess, but I let my hair grow much longer than usual so I could warrant a salon hair cut. Dena cut my hair, she is super nice and put up with all of my craziness with a smile. I went during the happy hour times where you can get a drink while your in the chair, definitely a different experience than i’m used to. There is a world of difference here and I can’t say enough good things about this place. They can do wonders even for one, such as myself, stuck in a style that needs an update.

First, I’ll say that I appreciate how polite, down to earth and lovely they are. Dena did my hair at the last minute for a wedding this summer, and I can’t thank her enough! I had a horrible experience at the Aveda teaching salon in University City the day before. I am an African American woman and my hair is natural. I have 4a — 4c textured (tight spirals and kinks). Basically, I went to Aveda to get my hair trimmed and straightened, and the stylist was completely unable to properly straighten my type of hair. Silly me for going to a teaching salon and taking the risk. Anyway, I left their salon at closing, and I was literally IN TEARS, I had a wedding to attend the next day and my hair looked like a big puff.
I called Lather because they are near my house and Dena GRACIOUSLY AND PATIENTLY told me to come on in the next day before the wedding. She was able to fix what the student did, and get my hair pretty straight. She charged me a reasonable price and she didn’t take all day. I’m so grateful for her.

Great time at Lather. Dierdra was an excellent and hospitable stylist. Friendly and warm, and very helpful. I recommend this place highly, especially during happy hour where you get $ 5 off and a beer or a glass of wine. Sweet! I’ll be there again.

Dena, the owner, is fantastic! I’ve followed them from salon to salon for years. They can do it all — from a funky and stylish look to classic and natural. I practically have to do trust falls with stylists before letting them cut my hair because I’ve had so many who do what they want and fail to listen to you or are so conservative that the cut is boring.
Dena really listens to what you want, asks the right questions, lets you know if she thinks your idea might not be the best, and works with you to blend her vision and expertise with your needs.
It also helps that she is just plain cool. Same goes for Abbey — she hasn’t cut my hair but I’ve seen her work and it’s great. I also hear she’s amazing at men’s cuts.

So happy Lather was recommended to me by a friend! Abbey was friendly & knowledgable during my visit. Going from long hair to short is rarely an easy transition but Abbey was so excited about how it was going to look I never felt nervous. She tailored the cut to what would look best with my face shape and added a lot of texture to my fairly thick hair. (Exactly what I’d expect from an expert!)
As an added bonus, I made my appointment during happy hour — $ 5 off & a glass of wine/​beer! I’d definitely recommend Lather to anyone looking for their next haircut.

Found my new hair salon! It was a lovely hour. Enjoyed the conversation as Dena took her time cutting my hair. She even went back and made some adjustments after blowing it out. She gave me exactly the cut I was looking for. Love love love my cut and this place. Definitely recommending it to all of my friends!

Was just in Lather the other day to have my hair colored & loved it! I was able to book an appointment online very easily. The salon is really cute, clean, comfortable, and staff was friendly. Dena defiantly knows what she is doing and did a great job from consultation to blow out. I will definitely be back for more color and a cut.

Great local place to get a solid haircut. I usually make my appointment with Diedra, who’s fantastic! You can book online, and they have a happy hour monday through thursday from like 5 – 7 where you get a beer or glass of wine and a haircut for $ 20, which is $ 5 less than normal. They do tons of other services there, so check it out.

I moved down to Philly about three months ago and am thoroughly happy to have found Lather. Abbey took great care of me and we even developed a longterm plan for my hair!
These folks really do go above and beyond for the customer. They even offered me a french pressed coffee while I was having my hair cut. ¹⁰⁄₁₀ will go back again and again. Thanks dudes!

So, I must update my review, but not my stars they stay a 5! This visit was full of color and just as cutting edge as my last one. Because of my underestimation of the time needed to achieve the color I wanted Abbey, Dierdra, and Dena all helped to make my pink perfect! Let me tell you, these ladies know their stuff. Just from a picture on my phone they nailed it! I would definitely recommend any one of these stylists, they all rock! Color or cut, this is the place to go!

Love my haircut from lather! I had been looking for place in the city for a long time and am glad I finally found it. Deirdre gave me an awesome consult and did a great job. Exactly what I wanted and more, will be back for sure! Very laid back and relaxed atmosphere while maintaining professionalism.

I have been getting my hair cut by Dena for nearly 7 years now. At first in a salon, then in her house, then in anooother salon and now finally at her own Salon! Its nice being able to go in and joke around and not even need to explain how I want my hair cut! Abbey and Dierdra are amazing too! Abbey has cut my hair a couple times when I was in need of a quick cut and Dena was not available, talk about a seamless transition from one to another.
No matter what you are looking for, the stylists at Lather can do it all! And you get to listen to great tunes and enjoy a beer or glass of wine while you are at it.
People should be coming from all over to get their hair did by someone at Lather! Soon to be a staple in not just Fairmount, but all of philly!

I decided to try and find a place in the area to get a cut and a style today. Lather was the only spot open in the Art Museum area today (of the 5 or so places I looked at)…lucky me! Dena was able to fit me in first thing today. Her salon is cute and bright with natural sunlight coming in the front. Dena was very sweet and friendly throughout and did a fantastic job with my conditioning treatment, cut, and style. Next time, I want to come back and try a color treatment. This place rocked!

Dena, the owner, fosters a welcoming and delightful environment to come and get beautified. I will only come to Lather to get my hair done. My cut and color looks great everytime.

I’ve been to several different places to get my hair did. Barber shops, salons, my step-​sister in the kitchen, a hand mirror and a razor, etc. etc. Lucky for me these clown options are a thing of the past, because I’ve found the best salon in town.
The vibe is perfect. The décor is welcoming. Each room has it’s own unique color scheme while maintaining a constant narrative throughout the space. The music is always cool and sexy. The natural light accents the salon like a cherry on top.
The space isn’t just eye candy. You’re going to get quality cuts and color from the best in the business. Although Lather is a new salon, the staff members are all seasoned professionals who finally broke out on their own. Clients get everything they would expect from a high-​end, swanky, Old City /​Center City Salon. The difference: clients don’t pay high-​end swanky prices, and support a local neighborhood business. It’s win-​win.
I now look forward to my hair growing out, because I get to visit my new friends at lather. I always leave with a smile on my face and a new clean look that makes me feel great!

Lather Hair Studio is easily the best salon I have been to in Philadelphia. Not only are the employees warm and welcoming (offering coffee, water, wine!!!) but also incredibly knowledgable and talented about all things hair. I went to Lather to get my dream hair color, PURPLE, and not only did Dena succeed in giving me this color but she also took the time to use the appropriate amounts of bleach and color removers in order to not damage my hair, which she told me is very important to Lather Hair Studio. I would recommend this salon to any and everyone, strangers and my own mother. Lather excels in alternative hair styles but will still give you the best and most beautiful traditional style of your choice, these ladies are professionals. Love you, ladies of lather!

I’ve been going to Dena for several years and always walk away feeling better! I get a great cut and color and we have a lovely time talking hair therapy.
