I used to come here every time I visit philly. Great place to unwind. Unfortunately they are gone. A crime really. Now I have to go up to NYC for a fancy cigar.

Here’s what happened. Holt’s(who has the cigar store downstairs) owns the entire building and decided, after many years of being there, to not renew Mahogany’s lease and forced them out. Now these A-holes are making it the PRIVATE lounge for Holt’s memebers and unavailable to the general public. They have taken away a great addition to the Philadelphia night scene and generally just been nasty so that’s why(even though I’m a cigar smoker) I’ll boycott Holt’s. I’m try to find out where the owner of Mahogany has moved to.

I don’t actually smoke cigars, nor do I enjoy the smell of them, but I can appreciate this place. The first time I went here was with my old roommate when her father came into town for a visit. She said if I went with them he’d buy me free drinks, and since I was a broke college student I was not going to turn down free gin and tonics. While the smell was irritating to me, it seemed like a really nice atmosphere for someone who likes to sit back, relax, smoke, and drink. The second time I was here was on the day after my wedding. My husband and I had gotten dinner and were on our way back to our hotel room when he expressed his cigar craving. It was late at night and he didn’t know where to pick up a cigar, and we just happened to be at 15th and Walnut. A flashback came to mind and I realized, hey, we’re super close to this cigar bar I went to once in college! So we went down the block, up the stairs, and my husband got super excited. A nice waitress came over with a tray of cigars, he picked what he wanted, and we were all set. Now he works at a law firm in Center City and he and his co-workers frequent this place about once a week. And I get to toot my own horn that EYE was the one that turned him on to this place!

Never been to a cigar bar, so I’m just basing this off my first experience… I loved it. One of my vendors was a cigar«expert» so it was helpful to have him there… he also got me a nice scotch to match the cigar. The staff there were AWESOME… we were suppose to be a party of 6, when 3 people bailed on us at the door, ended up being just the people I wanted to hang with and the Mahogany staff were nice enough to let us stay in the nice sofas the entire time. The place has an old school feel with the mahogany wood everywhere, green velvety walls… it’s basically a classy cigar bar. Check it out.

Excellent Cigar bar with an amazing collecting of scotch. The place is very relaxing and the staff is friendly. I have noticed a slight decline in the over upkeep of the place, but I’ve heard rumors of a management change so hopefully they’ll spend some $ to spruce up the place a touch. As it’s normally dark out when you’re there it’s tough to notice. In any event I still find it a wonderful place to go and enjoy a cigar.

Don’t typically do cigars, although after my trip to Paris I decided I would smoke French cigarillos for a summer… lol don’t judge me. So Cal and I were in Philly for the weekend and after an awesome meal… a cigar seemed like the right idea. This place is great. The atmosphere is chill, intimate and smokey… lol I know. So Ive been to cigar lounges before and this spot just didn’t seem as well ventilated as it should be. It was referred to us by the waiters at the restaurant and it wasn’t too far from our hotel off S. Broad. The cigar selection was cool… didnt have some of the standards you’d expect and Im sure there is a reason. If when in Philly and I am having the urge for a cigar, I will definitely check this place out again.

We had a mission. A friend on his last legs of single life wanted no part of a cliched bachelor party, with no strip clubs, no casinos, no paintball, just a classy guys night out. So after dinner at a nearby steakhouse, we repaired to one of Philly’s swankiest man caves. The simple awning next to Holt’s cigar shop, and long staircase within belie the incredible room that awaits. It’s a step back in time, with only the single TV behind the bar and the frequent glow of a cell phone reminding you what century you are in. Leather armchairs and sofas are arranged in several clusters amid chandeliers and dark wood paneling. A bar stands against one wall and private stashes reside in small cabinets on another. The staff will be able to offer you a selection of cigars upstairs, but truth be told they are fairly high end offerings, you might be wise to pick something out in the store below prior to going upstairs. The menu also contains an extensive list of Scotches, Bourbons, Brandies, and other options to accompany your smoke. The selection is mostly high end, but the prices are not as absurd as I’ve seen elsewhere in the city. This is definitely a place I need to get back to again. If cigars and scotch are up your alley, you’d be remiss not to visit.

#43 On a whim after a typical round of happy hours in the city, my boyfriend and I decided to drop by after having read decent reviews on Unilocal.=) Note: Take everything I say with a grain of salt because, by this time, I’d already had about several drinks in me and everything was starting to happen in fast-motion. Ha. Anyhow, we walked up the stairs and were greeted enthusiastically by the manager. However, the walk into the XY-chromosome-saturated den was a creepy one since everybody looked up conspicuously as we made out way over to a pair of plush and comfy chairs, as if surprised to see a female. The waitress dropped by soon enough. We told her it was our first time and she was a sweetheart, explaining the menu to us in detail. We settled on a single cigar to share — unfortunately, I have not a single memory as to which one it was. We also ordered 2 cocktails to enjoy. Around this time, I needed to go to the restroom but only spotted a Men’s room and was CONVINCED that there wasn’t a Women’s — solely based on the fact that I was the only female in the room. I told you, didn’t I? I was pretty loopy while I was here. After asking our waitress though, I was informed that the Women’s restroom was a short walk towards the back hallway. We must have spent a total of an hour here, slowly puffing away at our cigar and downing our drinks. I enjoyed the experience thoroughly and it was a great setting for good and meaningful conversation. I will admit, however, I’m pretty sure it was the cigar and drinks here that knocked me out at 8pm on a Wednesday night. We sure know how to party?

I really enjoyed spending pre-Valentine’s-dinner drinks here. I’ve been to Holt’s before but never knew about the cigar bar upstairs! I just happened to find it on Unilocal( Unilocal to the rescue once again!) and I loveeeee smoky bars with old-school jazz. I had a terrible cold and I was shocked that my cough didn’t worsen from the smoke, but the whiskey was great and the waitress was very helpful with my questions. I’ve been looking for a bar like this for a while and I’m glad I found it and recommend it to anyone looking for a place to smoke cigars or try some whiskeys, scotch, bourbon or port. HOWEVER, 1 precious star has been deducted b/c I didn’t appreciate one of our waitresses assuming that I wanted some girly cocktail like a Cosmopolitan. I know I am small, but when I say I really like whiskey, I’m not being stupid or adventurous, I really like whiskey. So I was a little taken aback when she steered me away from the whiskey list and started suggesting cosmos and appletinis even after I told her specifically that I really enjoy whiskey(I didn’t elaborate that the only whiskey I keep at home is 30-yr Ballantine’s scotch). I’m sure she was a little surprised when I finished my jameson in no time and I wasn’t drunk! What a concept!

Swank cigar bar. Cushy chairs, intimate setting, low lights with high ceilings to keep the air moving. Cigar selection is awesome — staff is ultra friendly and will help. Drinks are nicely done at what-you-would-expect prices. Lovely.

You can order your cigars at Holtz below, great prices! and again no charge to smoke. I guess their philosophy is that they are thankful that you support their business and why keep on charging you just to use what you buy. We got snowed in and the only bar open was this GEM… full bar, open cigar lounge in downtown Philly. Where else can you have your Louis Tre and a Padron 80th? Se acabo…

Awesome cigar bar! Friendly staff, very relaxed environment. Comfortable, over-stuffed chairs and couches, dark wood tables, just a very nice interior. The ventilation system is also very good, I brought my gf here who doesn’t like smoke and she survived. Great selection of scotches and whiskeys, though I was a little disappointed last time I ordered a cocktail, it was a dark and stormy that just didn’t taste right. You can bring your own cigar and they’ll offer you a cutter and a light without any hesitation. One of the coolest and most sophisticated spots in Philly.

Perhaps we were a little loud and obnoxious, but you don’t passive aggressively stop serving us if we spend over $ 1000 for 10 people in 2.5 hours. We outnumbered everyone else put together. Decent selection of whisky, but a pretty lame cigar selection. The décor is dated and shabby.

It must have been a slow Saturday… There were six people in the cigar bar, including a friend and I. We stopped in after the Uhuru Rittenhouse Flea Market. We needed a quiet place to catch up, and this was perfect. Although it was a cigar bar, I did not feel at all uncomfortable being around some heavy smokers. The prices were reasonable for the cigars, although the drinks were a bit high. The upside of those few drinks, however, were that they were uniform and strong. As for the ambiance, it had leather sofas and wing-back chairs as well as the clubby atmosphere I sometimes enjoy. Although not somewhere I would think to go on the spur of the moment, it takes you far from the typical city experience. So, if you’re in Rittenhouse Square on a sunny(or overcast, Irish-like day), step into Mahogany and stop time for a few moments.

«I love scotch. Scotchy, scotch, scotch. Here it goes down, down into my belly…» I do love scotch. I brought my brother here to start off his bachelor party. It’s probably one of the few smoky bars in Philly, but the atmosphere is amazing. You feel like you’re in a private club(not the dance club kind, but the snooty, drinking out of snifters kind). It was awesome. I admit that the last time I smoked a cigar, it was a Dutch Masters(as a teenager), but I actually enjoyed the one I had there! Expensive, but I’m definitely going back.

Great little semi secret spot for a smoke and a drink. Prices are good if you don’t have your own smokes too. You also don’t get that obnoxious attitude and an stigma associated with lots of smoke lounges, especially in NYC. Must really visit more.

Wow. Very classy cigar bar in downtown Philly. Overpriced(as expected) but comfortable, friendly and luxurious. Classy but not stuffy. A younger, hip, casual crowd mixed with an older, stuffier, upscale crowd without being awkward. Cant’ wait to go back.

Let me preface this by saying I still like this place. Just that my latest experience left much to be desired. I’m not a cigar connoisseur by any means so don’t think I’m some sort of expert in the matter. I’m like your normal casual cigar smoker(events, celebrations, random nights), so I will basically smoke anything, know about 4 brands, and know not to inhale. But yesterday, it just wasn’t a good experience on the fact that the cigar they sold me sucked. In the first quarter inch(a panatella size) of smoking, the ash split down the middle. That meant I had to ash quickly, rather than let it sit. Then, halfway through, while actively smoking, the cigar went out. The leaves were flaking off with barely a touch. And the firmness of the cigar was like a well done steak — if it’s not what you want, it’s not what you want. We brought this up to the host. He was sitting at the bar, enjoying his own cigar. 1. When asked about the ash splitting, he stated that the ash split because it was lit improperly. Ok, that may be the case(I use a match, put the flame to the end while puffing), but I have smoked over 30 cigars using the same exact method and it has NEVER split. I’ve always had my ash last at least halfway down. 2. When asked about the flaking leaves, he stated that since it was a single leaf wrapper, the glue may have come undone and thus flaked off. He also stated that the band should be left on(I was playing with the band after it had gone out and it came off. I leave it on until it’s about to burn). 3. I wish I asked about why the cigar just went out. I did not. I have had cigars which were still burning 15 minutes after I stopped smoking them. Again, this went off while I was smoking. Also, did not ask about the firmness. It was about as firm as if you touched your thumb to your pinky, the flesh underneath the thumb. That’s how firm it was. 4. Finally, he stated if they had something to compare it with, he could see. We didn’t feel like dragging it out anymore, but my other friend with us had the exact same cigar(Ashton VSG) and it was fine. I didn’t really care about the money spent. I did not appreciate him making me feel like a jackass, thinking I was a retard. I hate that air of superiority specialized people feel when they know a product more than most others, and when there are a lot of «rookies» doing it. It was a $ 19 cigar, and for that, I’d expect it to be what I wanted. If you ordered a steak medium-well, and it came out rare, do you need someone to tell you how to eat a steak? How it should be cooked and eaten? No. You get it the way you want. I don’t like my cigars dry, flaking and going out midway. The second star is because I ordered a roast beef sandwich. That thing was good. Really good, even though the waitress looked like she was going to stab me because I wanted a menu after 11pm. After all that, I’ll come back. It has a great atmosphere, great vibe, and is very relaxed. One bad experience will not make me dislike this place. I just hope it was a one time thing, and not a recurring theme.

So very true, Mahogany is 100% man cave. This is the stuff dreams of testosterone and masculinity are made of! Get ready to puff your chest up good and high and get those shoulders back and square just to get in the door. Ok, perhaps I’m guilty of exaggerating just as tad… hey, I’m as lady as they come and was welcomed into this dude lair of pure class, warm cognac, tasty cigars and green leather with open arms, but still, one has to admit this is as boys club as any establishment can get. With their rich, dark wood-panelled walls adorned with individual cigar lockers for members, a list of cognacs, bourbons, whiskeys and scotches to rival the best of ‘em and, of course, copious leather and plaid, Mahogany was the ideal spot to entertain and encourage conversation for my male group of clientele. A cigar for me, too? Hey, when in Rome… bring it on! Problem was actually selecting the cigar for my maiden voyage — what to try? What would be easy for a beginner? Unfortunately, our server was anything but helpful… the young girl was rude, short and impatient with not just me, but my whole group. So much for that feather in my cap. As the evening continued her unaccommodating attitude persisted — refusing to seat us at the nice(and available) cluster of couches and chairs and relegating us instead to high bar tables with stools. The empty comfy couches called longingly to us as we sat the only large party in the place, yet Miss Server stayed the course never letting on that she gave a cigars puff for our contentment. Poor thing only served at making us all uncomfortable and ready for friendlier pastures. Too bad… I thought man caves were made for letting loose and kicking back… A better server would surely have yielded a better overall experience and guarantee many happy, smokey, sumptuous returns. Put that in your cigar and smoke it. High priced liquor + lavish interiors + rich cigars = a necessity for the caliber of service to match.
