If I had only known. Recently, I had been hanging out with a friend having coffee. Out of nowhere, I had to abruptly excuse myself to go vomit in the restroom. 10 minutes later, I had to repeat this gesture; what I saw in the result was spinach from 2 days prior. I chalked it up to food poisoning, and left it at that… until a week later. Doubled over in pain in the middle of the night, unable to sleep, thinking I might die, I dressed myself and wearily biked to Methodist Hospital. After a catscan and a slew of tests, the findings were that my intestines, all 30 feet of them, were filled to the brim. They admitted me, pumped me full of 348 oz. jugs of golytely, 20 oz. of miralax, and 6 laxative pills, and put me on a low-fiber diet. Once I had started to go, they said there was nothing more they could do for me and released me. I was afraid because I knew the majority of the stuff in there was still there, and what if it didn’t all come out? I wasn’t going like crazy like you’d expect of someone who’d ingested a years worth of laxatives/But I continued my low-fiber diet at home and tried to be relaxed. …But I wasn’t going regularly — again. A week later, same thing — 2 am, doubled over, and I went back to the ER. I was in so much pain this time I was on the floor rocking back and forth like a little animal, and after am x-ray, they 30 ft. of intestine was still filled, but this time, my colon was filled, too. They put me on NPO for 4 days — no food, no water, afraid that my colon would rupture if anything else went into my system. After days of tests, tests, blood being drawn 5 times a day, hormone panels, specialists — it was determined my metabolic systems and my glands were all slowed down to the point of near shut-down. Nothing that can’t be reversed, but my excretory system wasn’t keeping pace with regular meals. The whole time, I kept asking for a colonic. I didn’t see the point of ANOTHER laxative barrage, but that’s what they did. 5 out of the 6 doctors I dealt with didn’t even KNOW what a colonic WAS. 3 days into my stay, I started to move my bowels… slowly. Not enough. And again, they moved to discharge me. I balked — afraid of yet ANOTHER repeat. But I know that a colonic would HAVE to happen, and I asked the ONE Doc who did know if she could give me any reason NOT to have one. She said it was probably a good idea and gave me the physical go-ahead. So after tweaking my diet ratios and a few other minor changes, I had success. At a loss for who to go for a COLONIC, the web offered no solid leads to feel confident in. I figured since I was in it for holistics, I went down to Essene(best health food store EVER) and asked the vitamin and cosmetic section saleswoman if she could give me a reference. Enter the name Mary Anne Biehler. I couldn’t find a website, but a googling led to a slew of positive stories and testimonies; after a conversation with her, I was sold and made an appointment. With several decades of colonic therapy experience, Mary Anne was thorough in explanation, delicate in nature, and a joy to converse with. The session was amazing, clean, eye-opening, not painful, not uncomfortable, not weird. It was NOTHING like anyone thinks of when colonics come to mind. This has changed my life exponentially. I could have saved myself 2 hospital stints, 2 weeks of missed work, countless chemicals being pumped into my system — pain, fear, anxiety — if I had known. What came out of me could NEVER have been achieved otherwise. The hospital could have given me every laxative in the world and it wouldn’t have worked. Purified water flushing out toxins and waste; THAT’s all that it is. Slow, relaxed, just really amazing. People spend time and money to get their nails done, their hair, everything — but how many years have you lived in the same body and never seen the inside? What’s going on in there? Do you even know until it’s too late? I am not only a fan of colonics, but an advocate. I believe everyone should do this at least ONCE: if you don’t like it, you never have to do it again. But it has changed the way I think about what goes IN now. Stuff just isn’t good enough unless I say it is. And I would never go to anyone but Mary Anne — she is with you the whole time, offering a coaching vibe and explaining every minute of the procedure. She offers a sliding scale for her fees, so expect to pay in the ballpark of $ 100, give or take a bit. But she doesn’t end the session until both of you are pretty sure you are done. And you’ll know; you’ll be feeling clean and feather-like. Trust me.
