I was just at Peddlers Village this past Sunday. It was starting to get cold and we came around the corner to find the Lucky Cupcake. It was crazy in there. There was not one bit of organization at all. I ordered two small hot chocolates, they were extremely watered down and tasted like water with a hint of chocolate. When I walked in the lady handing out paper menu’s(without prices, and she was standing at the door just handing out menu’s) overheard my 4 year old son ask for hot chocolate. She said we have the best in town. I had to literally squeeze by the one section that had the prices of the items then squeeze past everyone again to go order at the other side. As we were ordering the staff from the other side were bringing customers over to the side I was at to pay for their items. We had to wait through at least 3 different customers because the other employees brought them over to use the register butting in front of us that have been waiting. We were able to finally pay and get our items. We shared a table with a very nice couple. But honestly we were again disappointed. My son got a chocolate chip cookie and it was rock hard and had no flavor. He did not even want it. I got a doughnut because I can’t resist fresh glazed doughnuts. It was horrible! The dough was hard and not airy like a doughnut should be. My sister got a couple of pastry items and they were not very flavorful. Honestly we did not even attempt to get a Cupcake because it was too hard to get to that side of the case. Even if you did you could not see what there was to order. So I can’t say anything about that. If it was not so crazy I would have loved to try one. The staff was nice and pleasant, the food and hot chocolate were not. They need better organization in the store. They also either stick to only cupcakes or give your pastry items some love too.

I recently stopped here on a shopping trip in peddlers village to try a fall inspired dessert. Since it was early I went with a pumpkin donut with a sugar coating(regular, not confectioners) and a tea. The place itself is cute — it’s been renovated since the last time I came when I just got a coffee. The donut was pretty disappointing. The texture itself was kind of weird. It wasn’t light and fluffy and it wasn’t dense and moist either… It was kind of chewy and that pumpkin spice flavor that I expected just fell flat. The donut also had a ridiculous amount of sugar on the outside. I had to wipe a large amount of it off. Tea selection is average and coffee is okay.

I was spending my boyfriend’s birthday in the area and needed to order a cake. So I did a quick Unilocal search for local bakeries and stumbled upon The Lucky Cupcake Company. His favorite kind is Red Velvet cake, which they had so decided to give it a try. I called the bakery and placed an order over the phone with no troubles. When I arrived to pick it up, the cake was ready. It was hard to resist all the yummy cupcakes in the shop. Everyone, especially my boyfriend, enjoyed the cake. It was moist and delicious! I like that it only had cream cheese frosting on the inside and buttercream on the top. It was a nice combo! The icing was rich but not overly sweet. If I am ever in the area again, I will be back!

I can’t believe how many people have this place average or subpar reviews. I’m not a huge cupcake fan(meaning I don’t frequent cupcake stores) but I can honestly say that I have never tasted anything more incredible than the French toast and bacon cupcake! The filling was creamy and bacony. I could not have been more surprised when I bit into it. The bad news is I gave up sweets but I’ll definitely refer everyone(looking for cupcakes) I know to the lucky cupcake company!

Following up on my previous review, we ended up selecting The Lucky Cupcake Company to make our wedding cake for our reception nearby. After consulting with them, we decided to have a three-layered cake, with their coffee bean(chocolate cake, espresso cream filling) as the top tier, a carrot cake with cream cheese icing as the middle tier, and their lemon-cream cake(vanilla cake, lemon cream filling) as the bottom. We were lucky enough to eat both the coffee bean and lemon cream, both were delicious. The guests wolfed up the carrot cake, but they told us it was also great(obviously, if it’s gone!). They were also able to do a great wood-grain fondant exterior, which my wife requested. The pastry chef we talked to mentioned that they had not done such a design before, but my wife provided some example photos, and we were very pleased with the end result. Best of all, the fondant was actually tasty, and not just a waxy waste. I’d definitely recommend this shop for doing any custom cakes, we were very pleased, from ordering to the end result.

Aw, Lucky Cupcake… I wanted to like you more than I did… I first found out about them because they were on Cupcake Wars. It said they were from Pipersville so I was like oh, I know where that is! And so my mom and I went on a visit home… My mom and I both shared the Devil Dog cupcake and the Coconut Cream. The coconut was infinitely better than the Devil Dog one. The Devil Dog was somewhat dry… much more so than the Coconut one. I’d imagine if I only got the Devil Dog I wouldn’t be very inclined to come back so I’m glad I got to try the coconut. The store itself is a very big space, and it’s colorful and fun and welcoming. It’s a bit hidden away from the main road in a deserted shopping center which is too bad for them. They need a sign on the main road to draw in customers. I give it 3 stars only because compared to all the cupcake places I’ve been to(I’m embarrassed how long the list is getting…) it’s not the greatest. However, for the suburbs, this is a unique shop and definitely an asset to the community. OH! And I can’t believe the other reviewers were complaining about the price. I couldn’t believe these were only $ 2.35 a cupcake. They average $ 3 – 3.50 in DC… (As Seen on TV list: Cupcake Wars)

I REALLY wanted to love The Lucky Cupcake. It’s super close to my house and since I’ve left my career as a baker I’ve been looking for a great place in the area to get sweets when I don’t feel like baking anything. I have a rule when trying new sweets. Order chocolate. If they don’t make a good chocolate something, they probably don’t make a good anything. I must say that the chocolate cake is fairly good. Moist and has a nice texture. The icing is my downfall. I’m going to speak upon experience and say that this icing is ‘bettercream’ which is buttercream but instead of using real butter, it takes shortening. Now, personally I prefer real butter in my buttercream. Or at least half real butter. There is something very plastic-y and artificial about bettercream. I do understand however why bakeries use shortening instead of butter: it doesn’t have to be refrigerated. But unfortunately for me, this icing just coated my mouth in a tasteless plastic film that was very unpleasant.
