Delicious sushi! One man runs it, so service can be a little slow when it’s busy, but it’s absolutely worth it. Great rolls! And they always go the extra step — green tea to drink, green tea mochi at the end, and a free nigiri with your rolls.

I can’t believe how everyone is bitching about how expensive it is to eat here. Try ordering sushi in Chicago and you’ll see that a signature roll is at least $ 14 per roll. This place is great! It’s clean and the food is delicious. It’s also owned by a Korean guy who can’t speak English very well so forgive him if he points to the drink bar instead explaining all the options to you…(referring to another review) I would definitely come back to eat here!

I finally got around to trying out this gem! I moved here from a city where good sushi was easy to find… since moving to CT it has been a struggle. I can honestly say that my search is over! I placed a take out order of spicy tuna roll, spicy California roll, shrimp tempura and the yam tempura. What surprised me the most(and this has been mentioned in several reviews) is that the spicy tuna actually has a kick and it was amazing! We didn’t love the yam tempura, but no biggie! The main rolls were fresh tasting and I was especially impressed with the size of the rolls. Sushi Red will be my go to sushi place from now on!

Hands down best sushi around. Everything made fresh right in front of you. Owner/chef and his wife are very friendly and hardworking. Complimentary hot green tea and green tea mochi are added bonus. Been here numerous times and have never been disappointed. Highly recommend any of the«spicy» rolls. Only downfall is occasionally the wait if it’s busy, but it is well worth it!

This is now our sushi go to restaurant. We have been several times now and tried many of the rolls and also the nigiri combination. Everything is super fresh and always delicious. We really love the spicy tuna roll, it is very different from other restaurants but we like the extra spicy kick and the chunks of fish in the mixture. Usually he gives us a couple pieces of white tuna nigiri as a bonus and that is the best. Personally, I think the classic rolls are great without spending so much money on the special rolls. The tea, mochi dessert and service is always good. Be sure to get there early so you get a table or seat. It’s a pretty small place and a one-man sushi gig.

Decent sushi. Lunch time is a good time to go coz there’s no wait. Chef/owner is a one-man show providing good service. He serves you tea when you come in and give you a complimentary mochi ice cream for dessert. Please support this local business!

As other reviewers have said, the sushi here is amazing. I work in Farmington, and we had been going to a different sushi place in Plainville as our go to. This is so much better, and worth the extra 2 — 3 minute drive. I went in at 11:30 to order our to go order. I was the only one in there, but shortly after I got there, several other people came in and the phone started ringing. I sat at the bar to wait for my order. The sushi chef/owner was very nice and gave me some hot tea while I was waiting, I thought that was so nice of him. It took about 20 minutes to assemble my order(for 4 people), so I could see where there could be a bit of a wait if anyone is in front of you. If you call your order in, I’m not sure where you’d fall in the priority order, so I’d probably still go in to place my order and enjoy some tea and down time. It’s really nice inside and the seating areas are nice, but it would definitely not be a quick lunch if he’s working on other orders. Watching him make the sushi was fun, he has such attention to detail and you can tell that the ingredients are fresh. When you order something spicy, it is actually spicy!!! This is unusual in the sushi world. A lot of times I’ll order spicy tuna rolls and my review is something like this: «it tasted neither spicy, nor like tuna» but that is not the case here at Sushi Red!!! Instead of giving some sort of leftover tuna mashed up with who knows what(as is typical at most sushi places), at Sushi Red you can actually see the whole piece of tuna, and then the spicy component is separate. I’m not sure what is in the spicy mixture, I will have to ask the next time I’m there! I was just so pleased to see fresh, whole, red tuna in my roll. He gets stars for that alone! The food tasted even better than it looks! The portions are more generous than some other sushi spots in the area, but in fairness, he also does not run a lunch special, so you are paying a la carte prices for the rolls. But where I need to order 2 rolls at other spots, 1 roll here would probably suffice for lunch. I even love how he pipes the wasabi on instead of just throwing a glob on there. It’s such attention to detail, along with the quality of ingredients, that make this place a must visit if you’re in the area and like sushi!

Amazing Sushi. I was here for lunch with a few colleagues during the week. The tea was hot and relaxing, the sushi was top notch in taste and presentation.

The girl working was very nice. Was served tea while waiting for takeout. However, I got three roles. Better than a Chinese buffet but still far off from«Good sushi». I become a bit of a beer snob because I travel for work and eat at a log of different places looking for good sushi. The best way to test is to eat it without any soy sauce(it’s an insult to the chef to drown it in soy sauce). Unfortunately, all three roles, I had to drown it in soy sauce and mix in some extra wasabi. Probably won’t eat here again if I’m in the area. ***Again, I’m a bit of a sushi snob** if you’re not picky, then hit it up. It’s not terrible. *3 stars

Unpretentious, hole-in-the-wall location serving up quality sushi. Previous reviewers have said that this is Southington’s best kept secret, and I agree. The price is reasonable and the meal often comes with free little extras, such as a piece of sushi and green tea mochi for dessert.

This was our first time here. Yes it’s a «hole in the wall» but it was clean with friendly service and sushi was great! The complimentary tea and ice cream cookie was icing on the cake!

Went here with my boyfriend for the first time a few weeks ago. It was amazing! Sushi tasted super fresh. You get complimentary green tea– awesome! We had the Salmon combo, New York and Spicy tuna roll. The chef is very friendly! I will certainly be back soon!

My favourite Sushi joint in CT. The restaurant is staffed by one person who is the owner and the sushi chef so if it gets busy there is quite a whiles wait but it is definitely worth it. The restaurant is a nice and small, quiet atmosphere. You can sit at the sushi bar or at a table. The rolls are rolled to perfection and don’t break apart when you pick them up with chop sticks. I would recommend the spicy crab, spicy tuna, and sashimi. Mostly everything on the menu is good. Come out and support his small business and enjoy some great sushi! You will not be disappointed.

Some of the best sushi that I’ve had in CT. Place looks very simple but its all about the quality of the food. I had the tuna and salmon sushi combo. The rice really is cooked perfectly compared to other mass produced sushi placed out there. The fish is very fresh and they give a generous portion of it atop the rice. The one sushi chef there is friendly and gave us a few extra pieces which is always a plus. This place is byob which I actually prefer. Bottom line this place is simple, with fresh quality sushi. Highly recommend it.

My boyfriend and I moved to Southington early this year, and we’ve dined and ordered takeout here nearly every other week. If you’re in a rush, I suggest getting takeout because the wait can be a little lengthy during dinner hours(sign of a good business), and the food is always fresh and absolutely delicious(and we are both picky when it comes to sushi). They are consistently incredible, and the sushi combos are a great deal. The owner is incredibly friendly, and it is clear that he takes pride in his craft. It’s truly a one-man show and he never disappoints. The complimentary tea and green tea mochi at the end of every in-house meal is also a lovely touch!

It looked like a nice place when we first walked in. We were asked to sit at a table and the only older man working handed us take out menus, then continued to take care of the other customers already eating. After about 10 minutes we were finally asked what we’d like to order. We placed our food order and asked for a drink, he pointed to the cooler. We had to get our own bottled drinks out of the cooler. The rolls we ordered were not even close to the best i’ve had. Actually, the shrimp tempura was the worst i’ve had. I couldn’t even eat it. The prices weren’t bad, but you get what you pay for. The best part was the prewrapped mochi at the end.

Truly a hidden gem in Plainville. We wanted sushi but didn’t know where to go. And so, Unilocal to the rescue and we found Sushi Red. What a pleasant surprise. The location is tucked inside a little hole-in-the-wall plaza. There is a sushi bar and a handful of tables to dine in. It didn’t smell funny or feel funny. There was one gentlemen working and that is all. He takes the orders, prepares the sushi and checks you out. We called at 6:20 on a Saturday night for take out and it was ready in about a half hour. There was one other group in the joint when I arrived and another arrived for take out after me. This place should be way busier! The sushi itself was fantastic. Everything tasted extremely fresh and the texture it was supposed to be. The wasabi had just the right kick for me and there were generous amounts of avocado on the Dragon and Avocado rolls. I am already looking forward to a date night here in the future.

This place is tiny and has a run-down feel so if no one told you how good it was, you’d be hesitant to try it. But it is fantastic! The freshest sushi you’ll find anywhere. Don’t go if you are in a hurry because the guy that runs it is usually by himself and if he has a lot of orders it can take a while. Trust me it is worth the wait.

Absolutely the best sushi you can find anywhere in CT. As other reviews have said, it is just one wonderful, polite man taking care of everyone from start to finish, so there may be a wait, but it is well worth it. He is a true sushi chef, and the fish is fresh and delicious. The sushi melts in your mouth. As much green tea as you want is included with your meal, and a delicious mochi at the end as well. Highly recommend the nigiri, huge pieces of delicious fish, and in my opinion the best way to appreciate the deliciousness of Sushi Red. Definitely definitely a place you need to try!

Sushi red is the best sushi around. There’s only one guy working so we went for an early lunch, perfect timing. The service was great, hot pot of tea which was perfect, and good quality food. I’m not the biggest seaweed salad fan but this place is delicious! We got an eel roll and a love roll, but arrived quickly and tasted amazing. The portions were great too. It’s a pretty small place so I can imagine it getting quite busy and packed quick but it’s definitely worth any wait!

By far the best sushi I ever had. The one guy who runs this place knows something about customer service. Obviously when it’s a Friday night and everyone wants to go on a sushi date the wait might be a little bit but it is worth it!!! I went to sushi red for lunch, a special treat from my girlfriend and boy did I tell her I found the spot for my birthday dinner! As soon as we sat down we were brought a hot pot of green tea. We looked what to order off the menu and ordered our sushi up! I never tasted sushi so fresh and prepared so well. This guy knows what he is doing and your experience and meal will prove you that. Come to sushi red for a real sushi treat!

Let me first start by saying the sushi was delicious! I will definitely be back, but next time I will call my order in and get take-out. I knew from reading the reviews before I went that is was a one my show and they were correct. Upon walking in we stood their a moment before we just sat ourselves. Then waited several more minutes for menu, when I decided to just get up and get them myself. After about 15 minutes the chef/owner bought us over some hot tea(which is free btw). Then another 15 or so minutes passed before he came back to get our order. About 10 – 15 mins later he bought out our miso soup. Finally after almost an hour from when we walked in we got our dinner. Also, please note they do not offer tap water just bottled. Now for the food: As I said the sushi was wonderful. I was not a fan of the miso soup, very salty. We shared 4 rolls and each was a generous portion of fish and very fresh. The prices were very reasonable as well. He also threw in two piece of white fish sushi for us to try. At the end he bought of free green tea mochi for us. Which was a nice treat. If you dine in, be prepared to wait a while. Though the sushi is worth the wait.

If you want freshly-made, high quality sushi made right in front of your eyes, Sushi Red is the place to visit! My friend and I sat up at the«bar» area where the owner does his work. It was so cool to see him put the time, effort, and care into making each roll, and he genuinely cared to know if we liked our rolls, which were fantastic! Finishing our meals off with a complementary green tea mochi was the perfect way to end the meal. I can’t wait to go back again!

I have eaten here often, so much so that when I go in I just say to the nice sushi chef: «please make me two sushi rolls, you chose which ones» Which makes him nuts by the way, but NEVER has he failed to give me something I like and something that is very tasty. There is not a lot of «on the edge sushi» which I also like, but you won’t find: Uni Sweet shrimp, Red Clam, Quail eggs etc It is all regular fair. Its all good, made fresh and not a lot of glitz.

Sushi Red is the best Sushi in the area by far. As some have said there aren’t tons of specialty rolls, but he has all the basics covered as well as a nice assortment of nice combos. I don’t usually consider the special rolls to be real sushi anyway so this is fine for me. You will never get better service anywhere else. This place is a one man shop, he is very polite and always treats his patrons very well. He often gives you a free piece of white tuna sushi, as well as Mochi at the end all free of charge. Prices are very reasonable, and preparation and food quality is absolutely top notch. Only negatives are the interior décor is nothing to write home about, and since it’s just the one chef, if there are a large number of people you may have to wait a little, but that’s not something you can really blame him for, as you can see he’s making the rolls /sushi as fast as he can. All in all a great little place, you will not leave disappointed.
