their«signature dish», steak au poivre, was so salty i couldn’t eat it. i told the wait staff and the chef and neither offered to replace it. they just sneered and walked off. never going back.

My husband surprised me with dinner and a night at Shields Manor Bistro/Angel’s Nest for our 14th anniversary. Max and De De are the best! They made us feel like family. Everything about the meal was delicious and the service was wonderful. Truly special! I didn’t want to leave!

A tad overpriced for the food. Don’t get me wrong, the food is pretty decent, but way oexpensive. Atmosphere: Definitely a quiet place, not exactly somewhere for a mid-twenties couple to enjoy our meal. Like the other review, we felt like we had to eat in silence lest we disturb other patrons. The restaurant itself is quaint, nicely decorated, although tiny. Staff: Very polite, nice, a positive here! Food: I ordered the fish, cannot remember which one… but what I can tell you is that they did not de-bone it, which means I was literally picking with my fingers trying to find pieces without bone in it… it also came with the full head! I don’t like to stare into the eyes of a dead animal as I eat it… The soup and salad were delightful, but way overpriced. We had a groupon but we still shelled out way too much money. Agree with the other poster that we could have bought this stuff at Price Chopper, gone home and cooked and probably have had a cheaper and just as delicious meal.

Back again and this time it’s five stars. Once in a while she makes this shrimp étouffée. It’s a 150 year recipe from NOLA. It was amazing!!! Huge prawns circled a tasty long grain rice dish that was so moist and soupy. It was not spicy hot, just excellent flavor. They serve it with 2 different tabasco sauces so you can decide how much spice to add Hubby had the pork chops with a succulent sweet potato patty and polenta with Mexican cheese and spices. The pork was very tender.

I went to Shields Manor Bistro expecting a lot, partially because of its 5-star rating. I don’t typically write reviews, but wanted to save someone else the disappointment of traveling out to Platte City for this overrated experience. Upon entering the 1850’s renovated house, I was immediately charmed by its quaintness. However, the charm wore off as I soon realized that, although there were probably 6 other tables occupied(most of the tables in the restaurant), the place was quiet — like church-quiet. My boyfriend and I felt like we were the only table engaging in lively conversation. Each time I let loose a peal of laughter it felt as though every other head in the restaurant swiveled to find out who had cracked the silence. There was not another lively bunch in the place. After hearing rave reviews of the Blue Cheese Shrimp on Unilocal and in the Pitch, we decided to order it as an appetizer. I think if you are going to include an ingredient in the name of a menu item, the ingredient should at least be noticeable in the dish. Neither my boyfriend nor I could taste the least bit of blue cheese. While the shrimp were nicely cooked, $ 12 seemed a little steep for 5 shrimp in butter sauce. Sadly, the real highlight of the meal was the salad, which was just a simple side salad. The french onion soup had a nice meaty flavor, but was way over-salted. We both ordered the steak au poivre, rare. Initially, I did not notice that the menu did not specify the cut of meat, and was expecting filet. What we received was two medallion each of some mystery cut. My boyfriend’s medallions were nearly twice the thickness of mine. All four of the medallions were tough. One of mine was so oversalted that I cut off the inedible«crust» and just ate the remainder. I am a big mashed potatoes fan, so I thought some nice homecooked mashed potatoes might save the meal. Alas, it was clear they were the grainy, powdered instant variety. We had a Groupon, but still ended up parting with $ 130.00 for a meal we could have cooked WAY better at home(and saved ourselves the gas from the 30-minute drive to Platte City). I was looking for a quaint, friendly, «home-cooked» experience, and was very disappointed. At least our bottle of wine was decent…

My spouse and I went there last night to celebrate another year together. We had a groupon and it was worth every penny and more. We started with the Bleu Cheese Shrimp. it was not at all what I expected, but it was absolutely wonderful. The shrimp was done to perfection and the mild flavors of the blue cheese sauce got my mouths attention. We followed this with a dinner salad and a cup of the steak soup. My salad was beautiful with all of the seasonal lettuces but nothing to write home about. The steak soup was good and thick, very hearty. I ordered the Filet of Beef with Sweet Peppery Cognac Sauce, over Garlic Mashed Potatoes. The steak was a little more medium well than medium rare, but the sauce more than made up for it. I am not a big pepper fan, but I could have licked the plate clean. My spouse had the seafood special — scallops — and was very disappointed. We were expecting a couple huge scallops, and got about 20 tiny ones. The flavors of the sauce on the scallops were too muted and it came off as very blah. Finally the desserts… The apple pie is the best I’ve had since my grandmother’s. The crust was light and flaky and perfectly golden brown. The apples were sweet and tart in just the right amounts. The Black Bottom Pie was excellent as well. I’m not a big English walnut fan, so I would have liked it better with black walnuts, but my spouse thought it was the bomb. The service was excellent. They were very attentive while not being obtrusive. A visit from the chef during the meal was a real treat as well. The facility is an old home, so the tables were in close quarters, but I never felt crowded. I can’t wait to go back. Maybe I can get some of that Sweet Peppery Cognac Sauce to go.
