Okay, I’ll be first to admit that I’m generally more of a Wawa guy than Quick Check, but I do often find myself here for various stuff, usually while on the way to Pt Pleasant Boardwalk. First, I’ll start with the good. The sandwiches here are actually pretty tasty, the meat is sliced fresh, and there’s enough variety to meet whatever mood you’re in. Additionally, the soups here are actually better than Wawa’s, and it’s self-serve, so no waiting around for an overloaded deli worker to ladle out a cup. There’s a free ATM in the store, and your usual«to go» items that you’ll find in most quicky marts of this style. That said, the last time I was here, I was immediately hit by the odor of burnt food /chemicals /who-knows-what after walking in the door. It was acrid, and I often found myself with my face buried in my shirt just to breathe«clean» air. Awful smelling as it was, I could overlook it if that was the only problem this location had. Whenever I come here to order a sandwich, the deli clerk has always taken forever and a day to make anything. To make matters worse, those awesome soups I love so much? Yeah, you better get here early, they close down the entire soup area before the moon lights up the sky — apparently QC thinks that soup is a strictly daytime food, and that surely nobody will want a hot, but light dinner. In the very least they could put the stuff into the back, so that deli workers can just reheat it for customers as needed. The worst is checkout. It doesn’t matter if I come here at 8PM in December, or 11AM in August, there’s always a gigantic line, and not because of a busy store. No, it’s because that no matter what the hour, you can guarantee there will be one person on register scanning slowly, with another 2 in the store chitchatting with each other, and /or a manager who refuses to step in to do any actual work. I never have this issue at any other QC’s, so why here? Better /more staff would make this place shine, for sure.

One of the things QuickChek is known for is being open 24 hours, similar to WaWa and being able to get a sandwich made at any time of the day. Generally, QC sandwiches are slightly better than WaWa because they slice the deli meat right there — makes a difference in your average turkey sub. My boyfriend and I were starving at 1am after a long ER visit and decided just to grab a sub from QuickChek and take it home. We haven’t had a bad experience at this particular QC but that particular night was awful. They only had 2 employees — one to make sandwiches(he was more interested in chatting with his buddy and listening to his iPod) and one to do everything else. Maybe in the winter 2 employees is enough for the overnight shift, but this is a 24-hour convenience store at the Jersey Shore in the summer — you need to be staffed and stocked. The phone was strangely ringing like crazy so the poor girl kept running back and forth and a line built up. Our sandwiches came out all wrong — we didn’t even order anything custom, we both ordered a house special. But having had these sandwiches before, they came out totally wrong. On the wrong bread, half the size it should have been, missing lettuce and shouldn’t have had mayo, etc. It wasn’t even worth trying to argue with the sloppy kid who made them — he had his music turned up by then. We were tired and just wanted to put something in our stomachs. But, we won’t go back there again.
