This place is soo good. He’s got new hours(opening at 5) so you can now enjoy it before you go out! Had the lamb gyro and it is huuuge and absolutely delicious. Really mild but tasty garlic and tzatziki sauce, all fresh ingredients and he cooked up everything right when we ordered. Definitely coming back.

Amazing food. Great prices and the owner hooks it up with the fries and they taste great. Will be back again.

Needs 5 stars not sure if my edit changed so I’m doing it again, great food. That’s what’s important.

Great food. The best part about this place though is the owner, Ned I think his name is. Greets you just as you walk into the place. He’s the kind of person that truly cares about the food he serves and the service you get. I like that. The gyro’s are delicious, fresh and huge! The bacon wrapped polish dog(I think it is) is delicious too. Always recommend this place to friends. During our last visit«Little Shop Of Horrors» was playing on the tv, an added bonus to our quick bite.

Holy shitttt! I loved old Big Berthas, that being said, HOLYSHIT! Perfect complimentary flavors and with a twist. The Kim Che is some of the best I have had in a long time. Way to keep an institution alive with a great twist.

Not having been to Big Bertha’s in a couple of years I was so excited to find myself in the area during business hours about a month ago. The closer I got the more I could taste the yummy gyros that I remember so well. As I pulled up there were several people out in front and I had to make my way through several thick clouds of smoke to the door, which I found locked. A young woman standing in the clouds of smoke all of a sudden says that she works there and can let me in… great. Inside it pretty much looks like the same great place I love aside from the fact that it was really smoky, to the point that it was burning my throat and I kept coughing. The young woman explained that it is because of the fryers in there and there isn’t ventilation(or something to that effect). I remember watching the lamb being cut off the turning cooker when I was there before, and while it may have changed before the new owner, it definitely wasn’t the case. Instead the meat for my gyro was pulled out of a container/drawer and heated up. It still looked good and I still couldn’t wait to try it… and then I did. It was the driest, toughest pieces of gyros meat I’ve ever had. Instead of being sliced meat it reminded me of something like a cheese stick(the shape). I live 30 – 40 minutes away and so I would be lying if I didn’t say that I was highly disappointed. A little with the service, only cause young woman couldn’t wait to get back out to her friends. But mostly disappointed with the food. It’s a bummer that a change in ownership resulted in such a change in the food.

We’ve all had gyros, right? I got one with lamb and roasted garlic. I think that that gyro saved my life. It was so delicious. I was stoned though. But it was really delicious. Actually I am still stoned.

I’d give this place a 4 star rating but like most people have said. I have stopped by recently for some Gyro but the place was closed! The gyro’s great. My first gyro experience was here in fact. I’ve only had this 3⁄6 times I attempted to get some gyro though… This rating is only because it’s randomly closed the past 3 consecutive times I have attempted to get some food from here. If not it would be 4 close to 5!

Waaaaah love Big Bertha’s! I’ve been to Portland a jillion times, but I just discovered this place in 2014. I usually make a stop(or a few) at BOG/Tanker during my trips out there, being that they’re a couple of my favorite bars in Portland, and grabbing food over at Big Bertha’s is a bonus for sure. The owner’s rad, my friends and I met him the first time we were in there.

The owner is working very hard to maintain his hours, and I appreciate that he responded to my initial review. We have stopped in a few times recently, and I’m happy to report they’ve been open, and the gyros are still as awesome as ever! Thanks!

Super yummy food and amazing service! After much searching, I’ve finally found a place that has great falafel! I can’t wait to go back!

I hate this place because the falafel is THEBEST in Portland, but they are NEVEROPEN when they are supposed to be. Im not exaggerating when I say that I have tried to come here at least 10 times over the past few months, and each time they are closed. Someone else should open a late night falafel place so I can stop trying to come here.

Very casual. Absolutely no frills. Quite tasty. This is a great place to stumble into around 2AM on a friday night when the drunchies really start to hit hard and their late-night hours suggest that is precisely what they’re going for. Nothing here is the best I’ve ever tasted but there is certainly nothing better within stumbling distance at midnight and, rest assured, it is still quite delicious when sober too! I am so grateful this place exists where it does!

Bertha’s has great gyro’s and customer service. While you wait for your delicious gyro in your maybe drunken state, you can watch old episodes of SNL or whatever the current employee has going on the television. They don’t open until late, so it’s not somewhere you can go and just grab lunch. But if you’re in Portland, you better be bar hopping around Hawthorne cause it’s beautiful and is one of the best strips in town! So when you walk out of the bar at 2am and realize you’re starving, there’s an amazing little hole in the wall that sells you the medicine you need to fulfill that hunger!

This place gets 3 stars because the customer service was outstanding. This was the first place I ever tried a lamb gyro back in the day. Years went by and I ended up moving right by this place, but it never seemed to be open. I was happy with the quality of the food in the past, but maybe that is because I did not know there were better gyros out there. We came here in the few weeks and our food was blah. It was cold, dry and not very flavorful. Not sure if it is just inconsistency, but I will say that there are amazing gyros at a certain cart just a few blocks away. Seriously though, the customer service was on point, but I have to say that I have another favorite place for a gyro and I just realized I should not cheat on that place.

Great little dive! Unlike most of these other posts, we did not go after bar hopping :) This is a very small place with just a few seats. We arrived shortly after they opened at 8pm. The owner greeted us and was super friendly and answered all of our questions. The good news was that their lamb was on the spit! No pre sliced/frozen lamb. The pita bread was good. Here is why it’s only 3 stars… The frozen fries that were on mine took away from the lamb. My husband didn’t care for the whole cloves of garlic on his and the hummous that was used for the pita fries was frozen and water was added to mix it up. Now the pita fries… WOW these were delicious!!! I could have eaten a whole basket myself. The falafel was really good as well. Not dry and crumbly. The cucumber/yogurt was ok. Very typical. The décor is fun. If you get offended easily. This is not a place you want to step into! We may go back if we can’t make it to Hilsboro to the Gyro House.

Cash only is a bummer remix. Small place but a few tables available. Sriracha on a gyro blew my mind. Good food. Little pricey.

Back again and soooooo happy this place is still around! This place was the original… before Zach’s and the food carts and still very good! I LOVELOVELOVETHISPLACE!!! LOVETOMMYTOO! HEISGREAT! Big Berthas has been around for a while and every time I go there I am reminded of how much I love this place. Tommy, the humble owner, is friendly and will be happy to chat with you while you wait for your food! I have been there dozens of times and always enjoy the food. My usuals are the gyros and the pita fries. Both are delicious and must haves!!! Go check out this little gem… but you will have to do it at night since I think they are open from 8pm to 3am… but great for late night when you are on Hawthorne! If you have never had pita fries, then you must try them!!!

This tiny hole in the wall is the sort of place that can totally save your ass when it’s 1:30 in the morning, and you’re starving, and you’re on upper Hawthorne, and you cannot, for obvious reasons, drive down to Whiffies. They serve gyros. The meat is always moist and flavorful. If you’re not of the meat-eating persuasion, they’ll also whip up some veggies on soft pita bread. There is no reason you can’t get something in your stomach to try to head off tomorrow’s reminder of tonight’s series of bad decisions. They guys who work here are friendly, and typically sympathetic to your, uh, condition. Posted hours are more like a suggestion of when you might find them open. They have never let me down at 1:30 a.m., though. Never.
