We enjoyed the non-spicy broth way more. Next time I’ll order chicken, bamboo cut tofu, more veggies. No sauces and avoid the spicy broth. We ordered the Kobe beef, tiger shrimp, taro and mushroom platter. Also ordered three sauces, chili oil, sate, and one more. Hot jasmine tea was delicious, however for a hot pot, order a cold drink.

Eating here is risky. Let me explain. I used to be a person that enjoyed dining at a variety of restaurants. I discovered this tucked away secret spot a few months ago, and as time passed, I found myself thinking about this place more and more. I had a hunger that only hot pot could satiate. Monthly visits became weekly visits and last week I ended up here every other day. When you eat here, you run the risk of never wanting to eat other things again. The desire for hot pot will consume you. You see, the concept of hot pot is simple, and it’s something that any person could easily replicate at home. But this place changed the rules. Their broth is the best I’ve had anywhere. I’ve had hot pot all around town and also in China. This place has some sort of magic broth. The ratios of whatever they put in are spot on. It changed my life. I can’t stop eating here. Can’t stop. Won’t stop.

Food is very good, authentic good and spicy broth, very fresh ingredient, good price. Totally deserves a 3 – 5 star. but, I’m still haunted by that terrible waitress from 2 months ago. She took wrong order, brought wrong order. When we pointed out her mistakes, she turned to immediate denial and started yelling. She dumped mushrooms in soup for us after many times I told her not to. She was totally rude and disrespectful. I am embarrassed for having my friends to be there. Hot pot is supposed to be a fun experience. She attempted to charge us for more than all her mistakes, followed me around and watched me signing my bill, and scolded«isn’t the tip supposed to be at least 20%?» No, for you it’s supposed to be –100%. Food-wise, no complaints. That service was too overwhelmingly bad. Please lock her up somewhere please. She was the middle aged women you hired during 2015 Thanksgiving from Hunan.

Real good hot pot. We ordered way too much for the two of us, so next time we’ll be more frugal. The spicy broth is super spicy, so beware!

My favorite hot pot in town! Great selection of ingredients. You can get things here that other places in the area don’t even offer. The broth is super flavorful without too much msg and salt. This is the perfect social dining experience for these cold wet Portland months.

This place was outstanding! The spicy broth is VERY spicy. We ordered level 2 for the table and it was great! All the meats were fresh and came out cleanly cut and sliced thin. The veggies and noodles were equally good. Prices were reasonable and the service was appropriate for a hot pot place.

I don’t eat hot pot often. I do eat out frequently and can say their original broth is delicious. The handmade noodles and fatty pork are incredible. I ordered way too much for one person but came away with enough for two more meals. For future I would just go original broth plus noodles and one meat and vegetable. I got 3 different pork options plus 2 mushrooms and tripe. Everything tasted fresh, the dining area was vacant but clean. Definitely a good place for groups. Be careful with the spicy soup, it rocked my mouth the whole meal.

Pretty darn good! Especially for a town that doesn’t have many options for hot pot and mediocre at best when you go to one. Went the Sunday after Thanksgiving around 11:30am, expecting it to be busy given it’s popularity but found that we were the only one there. Killed some time with video lottery while we waited for the rest of our friends. For five people, we ordered the half and half soup base in case some of us couldn’t handle the spiciness – as much as we all like spicy things, it was nice to have the regular broth to balance or cool it down. My friend was starting to get sweat-y! I thought it had good heat, love Szechuan-style hot pot. Unfortunately, it’s not an all you could eat and pay per dish. We collective decided on assorted meat platter, fatty beef slices, homemade fish balls, assorted mushrooms, tofu, bean thread noodles, and bok choy. Definitely could use some more fish ball because that was very tasty. We felt that was enough food for everyone and we were all content. It came out to about $ 14/person which is affordable. A couple other parties came in when we were eating, I guess hot pot is more of a dinner thing not a brunch/lunch affair so I bet all the regular guests were at dim sum. It’s getting cold out so I thought hot pot was a great decision for a Sunday morning.

We had a terrible experience here. The misses was craving some hot pot because she was a little under the weather and we brought our kids along with our nephew here for a late lunch. To start off everything looked great and we selected about $ 36 worth of items along with the soup base and only water to drink. About halfway into our meal we spotted a worm in the soup and called over the waitress who then got the owner to take a look at it. We had lost our appetite by this point and told the owner that since we ate less then half of the food that we were willing to pay for half of the bill. We were not trying to dine and dash and at first the owner only offered a 10% discount and we told him again that we had lost our appetite. My wife suggested that we replace the pot but I reminded her that we had other things planned that day and was worried that their other veggies or meats would not be cleaned thoroughly. The owner seemed agitated at this point and told the waitress to ring us up. He brought us our bill and added an additional $ 10 to the bill and brought the total to $ 46 and said half of the bill was $ 23.00. The receipt didn’t have an itemized list of everything but just a total amount of the bill divided by half. We should of requested an itemized receipt but by this point we just wanted to get out of there. This is the worst service that I have ever received at a Portland restaurant and we will not be coming back. We were planning to give them another chance but after seeing the owner tack on an extra $ 10 without letting us know where the amount came from was the last straw for us. If you want to find worms in your food or have to deal with a shady owner then this is the place for you. If you want to be treated like a customer you’re better off somewhere else.

So good! Fresh ingredients and fun experience! Just wish they served beer/wine/liquor(says they do on Unilocal but none available when we went?) Also a make your own sauce bar would be a cool thing to have instead of paying for individual sauces… Just a suggestion. But overall good food and experience

Best hot pot place in town. If you want an authentic hotpot place with great meats and dishes come here. They have a large variety of choices of meats, veggies, noodles and sauces. Their broth have the authentic Chinese soup flavors. I love frequenting here, especially on a rainy autumn day:)

I love this place! It is on the other side of town from us(we live on the west side and this place is on the east side) but is well worth the drive. When we first got there we were the only customers in the restaurant, so that got us a little worried. Granted it was early(around 5pm… that’s around the time old people eat, my grandparents included) on a weekday. We were seated at one of the booths where a burner was already waiting and were left to choose our broth and sides. Let me tell you about the menu. There is so much to choose from! Different veggies, meats, noodles… there are 2 sides to the paper and you just mark how many of each item you want. Being the fatties that we are my husband and I went a little overboard. For our broth we chose half mild and half spicy. As for our sides we got the vermicelli noodles, baby bok choy, pork, kobe beef, tripe, winter melon, and enoki mushrooms… I think that’s it. We also got 2 dipping sauces — hoisin and garlic in sesame seed oil. With all that food we barely finished(We left a small amount of tripe behind. Just couldn’t do it. Breaks my heart), but we were sure satisfied! So, in review, great place for hotpot! Good broth, lots of options for sides! Couple of thing I wish were different… I wish they offered smaller plates of sides so we could add a lot more variety to our pot AND I think it is a little ridiculous that they charge for sauces. Yeah they are only $ 0.50 each but why not give each person a choice of one on the house and then maybe consider charging after that. After all sauces are a necessity! I also wanted to compare this place to Hot Pot City on the west side(the only other hotpot place we have been to in Portland). I liked Hot Pot City because it is all you can eat. The«buffet» prices are a little spendy(and the owner keeps increasing the price) but we’ll worth it when you consider my husband and I spent well over that price at Chongqing Huo Guo. However with that being said Chongqing Huo Guo has a better selection, especially of fresh items. Chongqing Huo Guo also has a better ambience and is cleaner(trust me, I’ve been in my fair share of dingy restaurants that have great food but you hate to think what the rest of the place looks like but you go there anyway… so that isn’t always a deciding factor). All in all, just go to Chongqing Huo Guo if you want great hotpot. Enough said.

Chongqing Huo Guo might be the only Chinese restaurant has high rating(above 4 stars). I was craving hot pot for a long time but Hot Pot city doesn’t have good reputation so I waited until I found out this restaurant. There are a lot of table with little stoves for each one. The owner and server greeted us nicely and out group felt very welcome when we came in. The customers will receive a blue list with full of options from soup base, meats(balls), vegetables and sauces. I think this is the only Chinese restaurant which cares about its reputation. The server provided us full of information we needed and didn’t feel annoying when we asked for many things. So we ordered the original/hot soup base(half and half). We chose fried tofu, some vegetables, beef balls and also fish balls. Very very fresh and the most thing impressed me was the dishes were very clean(try other Chinese restaurants and see why I said it was impressive.) Soup was too spicy and everything kinda pricy for me but worth it. I prefer paying for the higher prices but in the return I have great environment and good services, there is nothing to complain . Keep it up guys, I will defintely come back!

there isn’t that many hot pot options in Portland so Chongquing Huo Guo offers a decent option in the area. while it’s average in my opinion today it can be better with a few adjustments. You pick the 2 broths you want, most go with spicy and regular(you pay for the broth here). the broths are ok, and they get refilled often since they start to evaporate. the food is a bit pricey on some of the options. not too bad but it can add up. i was actually disappointed in the fish balls with fish eggs inside. they aren’t as good as the ones i’ve had before and hopefully they can change up their fish balls. overall, most of the ingredients were fine and the veggies were fresh. the sauces have to be ordered and cost 50 cents each. usually, you make the sauces yourself so this was a weird way of doing things. the dishes for your food were so small and inconvenient. they need to increase the size of the dishes and bowls. also, the spoons used in the soup weren’t good ones as the handles would get too hot and it’d be painful to hold them. overall, not bad. all the small little things do add up and if they change it up a bit and make some improvement this will be a more enjoyable experience.

Best hot pot in Portland, not only because of the food but the customer service was unbeatable! The food was fresh and yummy, we had a half chicken broth half spicy. Five Asians included my self all agreed on the test was very authentic, just like those we ate in Asia. We came to Portland all the way from Utah and were craving for some really good Chinese food after a long day. However, due to the business hours, they weren’t suppose to open for customers when we arrived. Long story short, after the owner heard about that we weren’t from here, they let us stay and let us ordered all the food on the menus. Totally recommend it for everyone who is craving for great Chinese food in the southeast Portland.

One of the signs of a good and impressive dinner is when I don’t even have the chance to photograph it. First, the spread was immense. I went here with my mom for her birthday and she just ordered like 826 different plates. At least. I mean, in the end, we took home two FULL giant soup containers of leftover hot pot my mom had to cook up. Second, as soon as you get a lovely plate of assorted mushrooms and handpulled noodles, I’m sorry, you gotta toss it into the pot. Another sign of a good dinner is when one of the people eating gets indigestion and proclaims ITWASENTIRELYWORTHIT. As many people attested, the spicy soup is really spicy and I think my mom accidentally burned a hole in her stomach. Worth it. We had a mountain of tripe, handmade meatballs, the hand pulled noodles, spinach and a bunch of the dipping sauces. Each sauce we had was good. We had the nutty sesame, the spicy fermented bean curd and the garlic sauce. We had one more, but I didn’t find it very memorable since I apparently forgot it. I would say the first two were my favorites. We also ordered the jellyfish small plate. If you are a jellyfish fan like I am, this place does it right! Thick, crispy(not chewy) slices of salted jellyfish with little chilli peppers. It was all at once cooling, refreshing, and spicy. I would go in there and JUST order a small plate of jellyfish if that wasn’t weird. This place is pretty legit with a nice, fragrant herbal broth! Just uh. Apparently, don’t drink the spicy one all by itself unless you are confident in your stomach.

Numb & Spicy becomes Yum & Pricey. At Chongqing Huo Guo in Southeast Portland, you’ll find split pot Chinese hot pot with House Original and classic Chongqing-style House Spicy soup bases($ 2.99). You can turn up the heat of the spicy half with one of three levels: Regular, Hot ‘n Hot, or Flaming Hot. For the full on numb & spicy experience, I recommend Level 3 Flaming Hot. Chongqing is a hot & humid core Chinese city in Southwest China where the days are short and the Yangtze River is one of dozens of waterways weaving between mountains and forests. It’s also the birthplace of one of China’s most famous variations of hot pot(Huo Guo) known as Ma La Huo Guo(aka Numb & Spicy Hot Pot) which is the inspiration for the experience and flavors of Chongqing Huo Guo. Bring friends and family to share so that you can get more variety of meats, veggies, and more. Olivia Z. and me split the following: * Supreme Lamb Shoulder Slice($ 8.89) * Australia Ribs Beef($ 11.99) * Honey Comb Tripe($ 4.55) * Tong Ho($ 3.55) * Winter Melon($ 3.55) * Frozen Tofu($ 3.55) * Assorted Mushroom Platter($ 10.99) * House Special Wide Noodles($ 4.55) * Shanxi Knife-cut Noodles($ 3.55) * Dipping Sauces are $ 0.50 extra each Since Hot Pot is my absolute favorite food in the whole world and I like Chinese hot pot to be as spicy as possible, it was pretty easy to make me happy at Chongqing Huo Guo despite being slightly overpriced. Service was friendly and Olivia had no problem communicating in Mandarin. We’ll definitely be back because a) I can’t live without HuoGuo or Shabu Shabu and b) I like gettin’ numb and spicy. Sometimes I like to just pick a random place to try for dinner. That’s how I ended up trying hot pot for the first time. It was intimidating… we were confused… the waitress spoke very little English… but we managed to clumsily place our order and hope for the best. Mostly, we went with meat and veggie combos instead of picking random things. Even with our inexperience, it was really good! It ended up being a TON of food, which wasn’t exactly cheap, but not too pricy, either. Be careful of the heat levels. The«medium» was hot as hell. I love hot stuff, and this made me sweat. Still not sure if we even Hot Potted correctly, but it was fun, the flavors were amazing, and I’ll probably be back.
