Haknuman Meanchey

This market has lots of essentials for Chinese, Thai, and Vietnamese recipes. There is also a small selection of fresh veggies like bok chok, bean sprouts, and basil. However, it is not the cleanest market in Portland. Parking is limited but there are some spots in front of the market and on the street.

Fresh Thai and Asian foods. From fresh basil in bags to frozen chicken feet to packaged sauces… they have a great selection.

This is a wonderful asian market. The produce is fresh and cheap, and there are many varieties of any kind of sauce, meat, spice, noodle, or interesting condiment you could imagine. They have lots of different kinds of bulk rice and candies. The tea selection is poor, however the dried mushrooms are very good. There are many kinds of curry pastes, sambals, pickles, and other accouterments of asian cuisines. The store does not seem cater to any particular country or region, but carries a wide variety of Asian foodstuffs.
They have fresh noodles, and bulk tofu which are both a great deal. The drinks in the cooler by the door are all interesting to try, and very often they have fresh rambutan and litchi. My favorite thing they do is a little snack they keep by the counter, which in Indonesia is called «lalapan», but they look at me sideways when I call it that. It is a sweet, sticky coconut rice with fermented banana or coconut in the center, wrapped about with banana leaves. They are 2 for a dollar, and a very tasty sweet treat.
Though I have not yet tried the duck-​faces or cow’s feet, to the adventurous gourmet I highly recommend trying the beef-​tendon meatballs. I use them in the extremely open-​ended Indonesian street-​food recipe for bakso, which is incidentally, also President Obama’s favorite soup too. These meatballs are also used to make Phở, which is a Vietnamese soup which can also have beef tendon, which if you have not tried, you probably should.
The owners are always friendly and recognize me, and don’t make me feel bad for being the only white girl at the Asian Market. They are always very nice and try to be as helpful as they can.
Though I also like Sun Oriental on Congress, I tend to prefer Haknuman Meanchey. The tea and seaweed selections of Sun are better, however I supremely enjoy their lalapan treats, and they have much better produce and more strange meats.
