Sometimes life throws curveballs at you. And sometimes those curveballs hit you square in the spine. That seems to be happening a lot to me lately, and so unfortunately I’ve been spending more time in doctor’s offices and less time on the golf course, in the gym, in the yoga studio, and sitting at the bar quaffing frosty cold beverages. Lame, I know. But there are always silver linings, and this is one of them. I came to see Dr. Stason via a Unilocal search, and I’m glad I did. I needed some muscular/skeletal expertise, and as it turns out, some brutal honesty. I have since chosen to follow an alternate course of treatment for the former, but the latter is something that will live with me for a while. And I desperately needed it. I am pretty particular about my medical treatment. I think some doctors take that as me asking them to give me an answer I want, vs. the answer I need. And on top of that, I’m not the medical expert, they are. However there are multiple options for many treatments, and I’m fairly firm about which paths I prefer to take. So when it came to working towards a long-term fix for my long term problem, Dr. Stason may have a way, and I happen to choose an alternate way. Is that, um, vague enough for you? Obviously I’m giving a four-star review for a doctor I’m no longer seeing, so it seems like a non-sequitur. I’m getting to that. See I had two problems when visiting Dr. Stason. My back(which all of my friends have heard about at length), and another new issue that’s completely unrelated. After a visit and some x-rays, Dr. Stason sat me down and had some blunt words for me on my new issue. And they hit home, hard. They’re words I needed to hear, and they’re 100% on-point. They’ve helped motivate me to start down a path of recovery and instigate some really important lifestyle changes that will be absolutely necessary for me to solve this issue. And for that, I am super grateful. I had an awkward moment as I contacted Dr. Stason’s office to let them know I was choosing another course of treatment for my back problems. I hate doing stuff like that, and his assistant diffused that awkwardness. See I prefer to put my trust in experts, and I can see from Unilocal that he’s helped so many other people. But I found another GP who is also an osteopath and we’re working on all sorts of stuff so it makes much more sense for me to one-stop-shop elsewhere. I happen to live in the same hood as Dr. Stason and ran in to him while out on a walk(now part of my daily routine). He apologized for being so blunt and harsh with me and it took me aback. I had to reassure that it was his honesty and realness that helped get me out walking on the top of Mt. Tabor at 730 in the morning. And while I may choose to follow a different road to treatment of my back issues, the kick in the pants I needed for a greater lifestyle change came in good part from this office. I do feel torn on how to review this experience. Part of my brain is telling me that I’m not satisfied with some of the recommendations I received here. However since I’m not super well versed in osteopathy, I’m not in a place to say that anything he prescribed was wrong. In medicine there are often many options for treatment, and I simply jive better with a different one. That said, I don’t discount the treatment he offered, and he was correct on many of my symptoms. And when ranked on things I know good and well — ease of scheduling, quality of bedside manner, warmness of welcome and the like, I have zero complaints. I have very unique issues, and am in search of very specific solutions. While this wasn’t the right fit for me, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this office to others, as many other Unilocalers have done. And things will be especially better if Dr. Stason makes a move to Portland from the far-out Gresham location.

Dr. Tom Stason is the man! I’ve had this über shitty back injury for the past two years(the extremely sucky aftermath of a rear-ending), during which time I went to months of physical therapy only to discover it was a huge waste of my energy and the poor insurance company’s loot cakes(awwwwww… Poor insurance company. I’m wringing my eyes out for them, really. I feel SO bad). But yeah. So I had concluded that a full recovery had evaded me completely until a fortunate string of unfortunate events landed me in Dr. Stason’s care. He done fixed me right up! I don’t know how he does it, I’m just assuming he has magic hands and you should too. Never mind a decade+ of specialized schooling and yadda yadda. Magic hands! That’s really all you need to know. Does your back suck the life out of you some days? Well now’s your chance to live pain free with just 3 easy payments of whatever your copay is. This message curtesy of Baby Booch, unofficial spokesperson for the man with magic hands… MAGICHANDS! You’re welcome.

Insight and their staff are fantastic! I was referred by my PCP to review results of an MRI on my lumbar spine. Dr. Sacon was sincere, knowledgeable and extremely likable. I felt at ease in the office, and left feeling like I was in control of my health care decisions. She is competent and kind, and I would recommend her without hesitation.

I first went to Dr. Maureen Sacon 15 years ago, after my doctor refered me to her. I’d been in a serious car accident that had not broken any bones, but which had traumatically affected pretty much all of my body. I was told by several doctors that there was nothing they could do for me and I could expect that I’d never regain a normal range of motion. Within three months, not only had Dr. Sacon restored most of my range of motion, but she’d also taken care of the chronic pain I’d had in my back and neck since I was 11 years old due to scoliosis and other factors. I went back to her 5 years later when I broke my tailbone in a roller skating accident. She remembered personal details of my life and body, and got me back to normal in just a couple visits. Recently I reinjured my tailbone and returned to her — now 10 years since the last time I’d seen her. Again, she remembered me and my issues and personal story, and within 2 visits had fixed my tailbone. I brought my 12 year old son to her just yesterday because he’s been hobbling about on crutches for 2 weeks after a playground accident and couldn’t stretch out his leg. In the course of the visit he gained a few inches of mobility. This morning he can straighten his leg almost completely, is no longer hunched over, and can put a lot more weight on it. I’ve never had such confidence in a doctor’s ability to help me as I have in Dr. Sacon. She has proven to me that she can both figure out what’s wrong and do something helpful about it. Insurance has covered my visits without a problem, but I would happily pay out of pocket to see her. I don’t visit often because of the distance involved, but whenever something serious happens, she’s the first person I think of and the one I trust to help.
