Lenny is the best in the biz. I moved out here from Detroit, where I had Frank as my barber and it’s like him and Lenny are cousins. Lenny is an old boxer from The Dalles and he tells great stories. The cast of characters can’t be beat. I’m a young professional so I just get a regular haircut, I don’t know if he does any fancy stuff. I went to Modern Man across the street one time because Lenny’s was close due to a huge snow storm but I needed a cut that day. Modern Man was the worst ever, they razored my part, which is cool if your parents can buy you everything and you don’t need to support yourself by having a job and you can look like a guy in a synth band with an asymmetrical haircut. Lenny’s is the greatest, only problem is the hours are unpredictable, so call ahead — pun intended.

I’ve searched high and low for a decent haircut at a reasonable price(okay, $ 9 is cheap) in NE Portland where I now live, and all have come up short. So, 12 years later I still make the trek down to Lenny’s. Also, the range of characters(customers) and camaraderie is unsurpassed. Get a haircut there before this master of the barbershop arts retires.

We’re always looking for the perfect place to get a haircut for the right price and at Len’s Barbershop, you get just what you need. I get a pretty darn good haircut for $ 9 and you can’t beat that. Len has been around for 44 years and informed us the other day that he is semi-retired. What does that mean? It means he’s down to 4 days a week. He can’t go any lower than that and remain viable, SO… if you want to experience Len’s, you better do it while you can. He’s the last of his kind. I feel pretty comfortable there. The energy is good most of the time, unless there are certain people in there, at which time I would rather come back another day. if you go super early when he opens at 8, chances are there won’t be anyone else there. Between you and me, I don’t want to tell a lot of people so as to preserve the things I like about going there. Shhhh.

I’ve gone to Lenny’s for years. His shop is not just a place to get a great hair cut, but it’s one of the few nodes of old-pdx. Think of this place as the anti-Portlandia, the anti-Bishops, the anti-new-to-Portland-I-moved-here-for-the-lifestyle barbershop. No, instead Lenny’s is a window into a rarely recognized, endangered Portland of old, before Hawthorne became littered with condos and hip shops. I can’t recommend this place enough!

Lenny’s shop is a perfect place for any man obsessed with sports. He has a loyal following because of the discussions that go on there. The store front hasn’t changed in 30 years which has a little bit of «character», but the camaraderie and quality of cut set it apart from the new age barber atmosphere.
