This is a Poorly managed food cart and we were very disappointed. There are professionally ran food carts and then are those that suck like these guys.

Across the street from the long lines waiting to get into Voodoo Donuts, the Mix ‘N’ Match Creamery Food Cart offered us nitrogen quick-frozen ice cream with choices of flavor, mix-ins, and base material(cream, coconut something, etc.). We did a dark chocolate with butterfingers on a base mix of cream & coconut. The result was very tasty, with a great mouth feel. Yah, the nitrogen thing is a gimmick, but in the end isn’t eating ice cream all that really matters?

I stumbled upon this place while waiting in line at Voodoo donuts. They make ice cream out of liquid nitrogen! It’s pretty fun to watch them make it and I imagine it would be very fun for kids. Ice cream made from liquid nitrogen is supposed to be smoother with lots of small, uniformly distributed ice crystals so there aren’t large chunks of ice. The ice cream was smooth but unfortunately not well frozen. I’m guessing they were being a little too stingy with the liquid nitrogen which is why my ice cream starting melting right away and had the texture of soft serve instead of ice cream. You can pick out the base, flavoring for the ice cream, and some mix-ins. I chose Kahlua and oreos. They were apparently out of oreos and put in some oreo crumbs and substituted with mini chocolate chips. This was really a one time visit for me because the ice cream does not taste good enough for me to want to come back.

Love the concept! It’s so creative, I don’t know why more people aren’t doing this?

Deliciously novel ice cream treat served up by the cart’s very friendly owner, Eric! We decided on getting the coffee/cheesecake combo. Fantastic!

This is the first time I’ve ever eaten ice cream made this way, & you know what, it wasn’t the greatest ice cream ever, but it was pretty darn cool! The ordering process is as follows: 1. Pick your size(S, M, L, cone, or cup) 2. Pick your cream base(regular milk, unsweetened almond/coconut milk, low fat milk, lactose free milk, etc…) 3. Pick your toppings(candy, cereal, nuts, fruit, etc…) Then, they mix it all together, blast some liquid nitrogen on it, mix it up for a bit, and viola, you have ice cream! The texture is a bit odd, slightly reminiscent of Dippin Dots texture, but once it melts in your mouth, it feels and tastes like regular ice cream. I ordered a small($ 4) nonfat, unsweetened reeses pieces ice cream & it was pretty good. I felt a little less guilt eating it knowing there wasn’t as much fat or sugar. My BF got the regular cream base & I won’t lie, it tasted WAY better! So depending on how gluttonous you’re feeling, just know you have options here! The fun part is definitely making your own creations & watching them turn liquid into ice cream. It’s also fun watching everyone across the street waiting in line for Voodoo Donuts as you walk away with your sweet treat in less than 5 minutes. Now that’s magical.

My boyfriend and I ended up getting ice cream when we were deterred by the long line at Voodoo Donuts. This cart is in a great place for people who want a sweet treat, but don’t want to wait. The staff is super nice and efficient. One girl was working the line, taking orders and payment, while a guy was making the ice cream. The ice cream was very good, but nothing amazing. The whole fun of the place is watching them make your order in front of your eyes. It’s very cool and worth the experience. I had maple ice cream with captain crunch mixed in and my boyfriend had vanilla with marshmallows and froot loops. We thought the price was decent and generally a good value for the experience.

WARNING: DON’T TYPETHEADDRESSINTOTHENAVIGATOROTHERWISEITWILLLEADYOUTO A PLACETHAT’S SEVENBLOCKSAWAYFROMHERE! THISPLACEISLITERALLYRIGHTACROSSFROMVOODOODONUTS! My family, a couple friends, and I decided to stay for one night in Downtown Portland because we wanted to see the Airshow that was in Hillsboro. While researching for some places to eat ice cream(maybe it’s just a me thing… but I love me some good ice cream!) I came across this page and decided to give it a try. Well, I made the mistake of punching the address into the navigator and had to walk seven blocks to the cart. It was not fun. On the bright side, my friends and family got some great exercise… haha… Ok, for the ice cream part: It was actually pretty cool watching him make it! The kids found it very fascinating! We ordered the salted caramel and it was pretty good! It wasn’t overly sweet nor bland, just right for our taste buds! If we ever come back, we’ll definitely come by here again!

Ice cream made with liquid nitrogen, right before your very eyes! Ordering is a simple five-step process:(1) size;(2) type of ice cream base;(3) flavor for the base;(4) your one free«mix’n» to jazz up your ice cream; and(5) any additional add-ons. Extra add-ons are good to note. You can inject more flavor into the ice cream or get an extra mix’n for 50 cents each. There’s also an «extra liquid nitrogen» option for 50 cents extra, where you’ll get your ice cream frozen rock solid. It’s a nice benefit if you have to wait for a few minutes and enjoy your ice cream later. The small is the equivalent of one scoop, medium is like two scoops, and large is about three scoops. Basically a dollar more per scoop. Ice cream bases can be premium(probably your best bet for real creamy ice cream), a fat-free and sugar-free choice, or a vegan coconut milk. There’s a long list of flavors for your ice cream base and another long list for add-ons. Yeah, I did it. I ordered some maple bacon ice cream with the premium ice cream base. A pleasing maple flavor here. I’ve deemed bacon an automatic win, although having the bacon crispier would probably send me cartwheeling down the street. The texture of the ice cream reminded me a bit of Dippin’ Dots. Some parts had hardened a bit more than others, but if you actually take your time and savor the bites, the ice cream will probably soften up enough for a real creamy experience. I generally ignore the«slow down and enjoy the moment» part of the memo. On top of getting your ice cream, it’s always a show when seeing the liquid nitrogen go into the metal bowl. Next time, I’ll probably consider other mix’n choices like Snickers, Reese’s PB cups, and Twix bars. It’s possible to even make S’mores ice cream with two mix’n options(graham crackers and mini marshmallows with chocolate ice cream) or three(graham crackers, chocolate chips, and mini marshmallows probably on vanilla ice cream). Endless combinations. Check out this great food cart!

So far the best ice cream I have tasted in Portland. It is fun to watch the ice cream being created. I had the Almond Roca flavor(added the almonds and coconuts as extras) and it was beyond delicious, and the price is just right.

It was fun to watch how the ice cream was made, and it was not bad to get 2 mediums for $ 5 because of a Unilocal deal. Disadvantages are they were too sweet for our taste, and seemed easier to melt than ordinary ice cream.

A very cool and novel experience. The guy who runs this cart is extremely friendly and engaging. He’s been doing this for only about 8 weeks. The ice cream is tasty and watching him make it is the best part. He has a ton of combinations of flavors and toppings, probably about 20+ each. The prices are competitive… for the same price I would go for a Salt n Straw cone instead but everyone should experience this cart at least once. Plus, with some of the deals available on Unilocal/Groupon it’s the best steal in town. My only gripe is that he uses Torani syrups to flavor the ice cream… it still tastes good but it could be even better if it was naturally flavored. Given the space constraints, he does more than a good job and I will be back to support his efforts!

My husband bought me this groupon. Yay ice cream! It is diagonal from«the donut place». Very easy to overlook this place. There are tons of flavors and things you can mix in. My groupon was for one flavor and one mix in, so I couldn’t experiment too much. I will try something different next time. The taste was good. The texture was a little strange. But not bad. I wouldn’t pick this place over a traditional ice cream shop, but I will return.

So we’ve been having some unusually warm weather in Portland. Took a stroll down to where Voodoo Donuts is and saw this ice cream stand. Let me tell you, it’s worth every penny! Eric(the stand owner) makes the ice cream right on the spot! I had graham cracker and gingerbread — tasted like Christmas. So good. Will definitely be back.

I ate science! It’s an ice cream stand on the street, only you never had ice cream made with liquid nitrogen before. What you do is you tell the guy what flavor you want and what you want mixed in your ice cream. He pours cream into a bowl, mixes in your choices, and then forces liquid nitrogen into it from a gigantic evil-looking industrial canister. It makes all the smoke and noise, and a few mixes with a whisk and boom! you’ve got the freshest, tastiest ice cream you’ve ever had. It’s kitty-corner from the famous Voodoo Doughnuts and Dante’s, easily accessible from the Skidmore Fountain MAX stop, reasonably priced for a tasty snack, and Eric, the proprietor, is super-friendly.
