Definitely would say that things here are cloyingly sweet, granted I am not a huge fan of sweets, so that might have added to it. NY cheesecake malt — very rich and creamy, good, not too much chocolate — was definitely borderline cloyingly sweet for me. I ended up stopping after the second bite. Thankfully I came with some friends so it wasn’t gone to waste.

Been here 5 times and only once has the experience been that great. The interior is very nice and the menu is German/Western European themed, as exemplified by the name(named after composer Franz Josef Haydn), but prices are pretty high, even for smaller items, servers are very friendly and professional here but for some reason they frequently make mistakes with the orders or the bill. The menu is small, and fries were too crunchy two times I ordered, but the mayonnaise is probably the best I’ve ever had, however, the next door bar that is connected can be very loud and the noise is audible if you’re sitting in the back. Not sure If I want to go back again.

If you don’t have much of a sweet tooth, turn back now! This place is serious about dessert. Problem is if you like less-sweet sweets like me, then desserts here might be a bit too cloying on your palette. I suggest ordering a tea or coffee to go with your treat. The inside is stylish and the dress code similarly so. They are pretty busy on a weekend night, so if you plan to go then, making a reservation in advance would be wise. If you are craving something sweet or something chocolate-y that is more decadent than what your average boxed cake mix could whip up, this place has you covered.

This review is solely for desserts only. Came here one night around 7pm and it was pouring rain. Street parking was available. You come into this restaurant and it is very cute. There are lots of desserts in the display cake that makes you want everything. I am a big dessert fan so I take my desserts very seriously. For about 8 people(including 2 kids) we ordered 3 desserts to share, mind you we had a big dinner already so 3 desserts is plenty. We ordered Boccone Dolce($ 9.25) — French meringues drizzled with semi-sweet chocolate, layered with whipped cream and fresh seasonal fruit. This was okay. How they displayed it looked delish. The meringues were interesting but not my cup of tea but if you like meringues, this might be the dessert for you. Ours had strawberries in it. Chocolate Truffle Cake($ 8.95) Dense chocolate cake layered with dark, milk and white chocolate ganache. This is VERY dense! ask for milk!!! This was pretty good but was not amazing. English Tofee Cheesecake($ 9.25) James Beard’s famous toffee, almond sweet butter crust, dark chocolate glaze. This is a seasonal dessert and this was my favorite out of the other ones that we got. The toffee is super delish and that cheesecake was very moist! We had 3 birthdays to celebrate so they were super kind enough to write happy birthday and put a candle on it. Thank you!

I highly recommend the Triple Chocolate Cake with the salted caramel gelato. It’s the perfect combination of sweet & salty. Indulgence at its finest.

Oh my goodness! I went here for the first time this past weekend solely based on all of the gorgeous pictures of dessert that other reviewers have posted. This place is so chic and cozy! We sat next to the fireplace in the back while it was down pouring outside. For lunch we split the hamburger and the croque monsieur sandwich. Everything was absolutely delicious and perfect. I made sure to save room for dessert. I was dying to try the boccone dolce because I have never tried it and our waiter said that it was their signature dessert that they are known for. It was surprisingly light & delicate & I loved how the meringue melts in your mouth. Their dessert menu is larger than their regular menu. I can’t wait to go back and try more desserts. This is the perfect spot for a date night!

Perfect cutesy little date spot! If you’re looking for somewhere to have some really fancy desserts with friends and post cute pictures on Instagram, look no further! This place is a super classy/nice little restaurant and dessert joint(but I suspect what makes them really popular are probably more so the desserts). I can’t really remember what we got at this place other than the Chocolate Cube, but everything really was very good, the servings were HUGE, and the service was great as well. I feel like this place is amazing for the price, the ambiance and the food really is on point and it’s somewhere you can get a little classier and dress up a little bit for a date night if you so wish.

I came here for the Boccone Dolce. Quite possibly one of my favorite desserts. It was fresh fruit incased in light and crispy meringue. Usually, desserts are kind of heavy, and overly sweet, but this one was so light and heavenly. My friend got the Baked Alaska, which had a good blend of dulce de leche and chocolate ganache(also not overly sweet!) The restaurant was very cute, and had a classy feel to it. I would probably come back for their brunch items.

This time I got the chocolate truffle cake and the six layer glacé cake(aka ice cream cake). Both were delicious! Rich and decadent — not for the faint of heart haha. Shared with two other dining companions.

Papa Haydn’s is a Portland must, there is no doubt about it! It’s been a few years since my last visit, but nothing has changed, and that is a good thing. Papa Haydn’s has and will continue to stand through Portland’s ever changing. The dessert is a must. If you don’t get dessert then you must be slapped. If you’re one of those too full after dinner to order dessert, then order dessert first! Well all ordered dessert. I opted for the banana cream pie, my husband the Georgian Peanut Butter paired with the ginger bread seasonal ice cream and my mother in law went for the Triple Chocolate. Words are just useless here… Banana cream was to die for, a shortbread cookie crust with dark chocolate… C’mon!!! The Georgian is a family favorite. It’s chocolate and peanut butter, insert drool, but the peanut butter mouse is light but in the best way light. The gingerbread ice cream tastes like a chai latte, whaaaaa??? Mind blown. The triple chocolate was a beautiful classic. We did also enjoy dinner :) my mother in law and I both ordered the scallop risotto and my husband the flank. The risotto was delicious, it’s not the best risotto Ive ever had but was still delicious and I don’t think I’ve ever received so many scallops in a dish in my life! The steak was also delicious, again not the best steak I’ve ever had but still delicious. The salt & pepper crust was just perfect! We also had our 2.5yo son with us and they catered to him very nicely and he enjoyed a grilled cheese sandwich, or in his words«sammotch» which was his choice. I did take a bite and can assure all other parents it’s an excellent grilled cheese :)

After dinner, my friends and I popped into this place for dessert and drinks. We shared the baked Alaska and a chocolate bourbon ball. The baked Alaska was so good. I usually don’t enjoy this dessert but it came highly recommended by our server, who by the way was super friendly and funny. The chocolate bourbon ball was very heavy on the chocolate, but we were forewarned. Where’s the bourbon? Sigh. The restaurant was packed! But good thing is that they take reservations so make them! Cute dessert and after dinner hangout. We need more places like this in California. It reminded me of extraordinary desserts in San Diego. The dessert list is endless.

Desserts! I love a place like this! So many desserts to choose from that it is almost annoying because there’s no way you can try them all. They serve alcohol! Open late night I love carrot cake and this did not disappoint Lemon Chiffon cake was delicious Boccone dolce. My friends loved it but I’m just blah for meringue. Baked Alaska. Interesting. I’ve cream was a but overly firm. And not warm from flambé.

This place reminds me a lot of Extraordinary Desserts in San Diego. As in, the kind of place you’d meander to after a dinner date(and there are plenty of dinner options on 23rd) in order to round out your meal with something sweet and possibly extend a romantic evening. ;) We got the Boccone Dolce that everyone was raving about, which is a traditional Italian dessert made of French meringues, not cake. If you’ve never had a meringue, the cookies give the entire dessert a slightly crunchy, wafer-like texture, which melts away with surprising ease if you let it rest on your tongue for a few seconds. Having never had meringues before this cake, I thought the cookies tasted like a crunchy marshmallow(although that sounds like an oxymoron). The cookies make up the base of the cake, which is layered with fresh berries, cream, and then drizzled with chocolate. I personally prefer the lighter taste of cake to meringues, and I don’t think I’d order this again. But I’m still giving this place 4 stars because the other cakes looked promising and I think it came down to this particular dessert not being my personal preference. The lemon chiffon cake on the menu looked promising, and I’d want to try that if I ever came back. Service was fine, but parking can be difficult in this area … It brought back nightmares of parking in SF. If you’re willing to park just a couple blocks away and walk, though, your chances of finding a spot exponentially improve.

If I frequented this place more, I can see it becoming a favorite. I came here for the first time for desserts on a very hot Saturday night. Like it was 100 degrees during the day. The wait was bout 20 minutes and even then only an outside table opened up. For an inside table, probably another 20 minutes. I don’t love their outside seating because it’s basically just part of the sidewalk. Also, it was too warm that day, so chilling inside would’ve been nicer. Our server was very nice. He gave me a few recommendations and answered whatever other questions I had. I tried their signature Boccone Dolce. Very different or at least something new to me. It looks like a white cake w/cream and mixed berries in the layers, but the«cake» part is meringue. Like meringue cookies meringue. This made it much lighter to eat than a normal cake. ~$ 9 for a very decent size piece that I could not finish on my own and that my boyfriend would not help me with much! I also got the ½ lemonade ½ green tea(like an Arnold Palmer). It was just ok. Mostly just like a lemonade. My boyfriend got he affogato $ 5. I’ve actually never had affogato. It was a scoop of ice cream w/an espresso shot(or two) poured over it. I used to think why would that be at all enjoyable. The ice cream pretty much serves as the cream and sugar in your coffee. Pretty good! Overall, lots of choices, nice spot. Saw lots of girls night out type of groups as well. I wonder if they take reservations. I would def do that if they did.

I cannot say enough good things about this place. Love love LOVE!!! Everything is delicious here, especially the desserts. The drinks are amazing as well! I always come here for lunch, a favorite of mine is the salmon salad– it’s so good and fresh!!! The atmosphere is very elegant but casual, perfect place for a girls lunch/dinner. The servers are very friendly and seat you right away. Portland is full of great places to eat but this one definitely is near the top of that list!

I was told to come to Papa Haydn when I visited Portland because of their delectable desserts. The atmosphere was upscale and cozy. You walk in and right away you see a glass counter full of all types of desserts. Pies, cakes, cookies, ice cream, etc. Their coffee was yummy as well. We tried gelato and macaroons. I regret not trying their blackout cake because I’ve heard such great things. It’ll be my excuse to go back! We walked down 23rd after we found street parking. There are meters everywhere so it’s not super horrible finding parking. We sat outside and just watched people stroll by. Cute spot.
