Great Thai place. I love the green curry– it’s on point! The tom yum is a little different than what I’m used to from Thai places in SoCal(has onions and tomatoes) but still delicious! Great location off of NW23rd.

Fresh and flavorful. I wish I remembered the name but it was a two days ago. The service was friendly. The tables are extremely close together. When I review I do take consideration of things that can’t or cannot be easily accommodated so despite the seating it gets a five star. The dish had a a lot of veggies and a great sauce it was on the stir fry part of the menu. My moms dish was very peanut butter like it was the emerald dish.

Solid. Tasty Thai. Perfect amount of spice in the«hot» level and generous portions — we got panang curry and pad thai, a singha and a thai iced tea(which came with crushed ice). Cute atmosphere right along 23rd, so great walking distance for a combo outing

Servers were having an off day I think. A male greeted me with, what do YOU want? Then got my food but no silverware for ten minutes, waited and finally wasn’t ignored. Asked if they had WiFi, and the lady says, I don’t know. Food was OK and made to my specific instructions. After the silverware accident, they came by every 3 – 5 minutes to see if I wanted a togo box. Odd atmosphere, OK food and the employees must be underpaid and under appreciated because they all acted like they hated their jobs and would rather be someplace else. I pitty tipped high and left… but don’t think I’ll be back

My husband and I decided to walk down the street to Nw 23rd to see what restaurants were open. We wanted to order some dinner to-go, we really wanted to have Thai food, but on Sundays usually most of the Thai restaurants in Northwest Portland are closed. As we walked down the street we noticed the open sign at the Red Onion was on! We went inside where we were promptly greeted with a smile, and immediately given menus to look over. I ordered the Kao Soi with beef, medium spicy, and my husband ordered the Massaman Curry with beef, extra spicy. We also ordered salad rolls with shrimp, and 2 tsing Tao beers to drink while we waited for our to-go order to be done. I was surprised at how many people were in the restaurant due to the snowy conditions outside. The streets are completely covered with ice, so not a lot of people were out and about. After enjoying our beers, and waiting for about 10 minutes or so, our food was ready to go. Our total came to about $ 40, which I thought was a great deal! My husband loved his curry. The only thing that he said was that it wasn’t as flavorful as the curry he gets from Thai bloom, but it was delicious. My noodles were delicious! That medium spicy was very spicy, which I really like. I hate when you order a medium spicy, and you can’t even tell they put any type of spice in it at all! The salad rolls were also excellent! They tasted very fresh, and the peanut sauce was warm and very tasty too. We will definitely be going back to the Red Onion. I am very glad that our usual tire restaurant was not open so we were forced to try someplace new. We were both very pleasantly surprised. I also should mention that the staff was very friendly. One of the servers came up to our son who was bundled up in the stroller, and was trying to get him to laugh. It was very sweet. I would definitely recommend this place! I posted a Picture of our itemized receipt so you can see exactly how much our bill was.

Delicious pad thai that was a big enough portion for my partner and I to split. While initially I was a bit worried because they didn’t seem overly confident about making it gluten free I took a gamble and it worked out very well. We just stopped in for a quick meal but I would definitely like to stop back(its a really cute place) and check out more dishes(especially if they worked on their gluten free options/protocol).

Came here with a few girlfriends for my birthday dinner on Wednesday at around 7pm. I was amazed at how many people they can fit in there! We ordered 4 entrees, all came out fine. Then we realized that the server didn’t as us what level of spice we wanted — so all our dishes were yummy, but not as flavorful as normal. We had to ask for the spice tray twice(no biggie) — it was just a little weird. Loved the place, will be back!

I ate here last night for a birthday. I had the chicken pad Thai and added tofu for $ 13. I am giving them 4 stars because they didn’t ask how spicy we wanted our food. So my pad Thai came out very plain until half way through, someone asked our waitress if they had a spice tray. Once I added spices to my pad Thai, it was delicious! I tried my friends order of pad see ew and it was great! All of the food that I saw looked yummy. I would love to go back and try something else!

After dining here last week, I think I’ve found my neighborhood Thai spot. A great combination of reasonable prices, tasty dishes and swift service. Typical Thai menu options with a few delicious sounding specials. I ordered shrimp pad kee mao and the chicken special and both were equally yummy! I’ll be back to work my way through the rest of the menu options in the near future.

I don’t like hair in my Thai food. Halfway through my entrée tonight, I noticed a human hair spiralling up from my next forkful. Gah. I still feel nauseated. I asked the server if she could deduct half the price and take the food away. She said yes, and also offered me a replacement to go. I said okay, but I don’t know if I’m going to eat it. I’ll be extra-careful, if I do.

I wholly trust any Thai restaurant in Northwest that dares forgo a punny name. It screams to me «HEYYOU! Yeah, you… the girl who peruses the entire menu only to order the pad thai every single time, c’mere for a sec. Do you want delicious food without the frills? Are you more excited by fast service than a sexy dinning room? When you say you want 3 spicy do you actually probably mean 1? We get you. I mean, we really *get* you. So you should eat here.» And then I do and it’s delicious. Great story aside, the«Three Flavors Halibut,» yellow curry, and pad see ew are not to be missed. But I’m serious on the spice. I said 3 and my mouth’s translation said 11.

Started with the Po Pia Sod, I was very excited to try it till I found hair in it, and that just totally ruined it for me. The Tom Kha was good, I wouldn’t order it on my own but I would totally recommend that someone else did and I would probably take a few bites from them. The lemongrass chicken, not ATALL what I was expecting and was very disappointed with what I got. It was sliced chicken breast with a lot of steamed vegetables, and so much peanut sauce on top that did not work at all. I was ready to go somewhere else but then I tried the Kao soi that my friend ordered. Best thing I’ve ever tasted at any Thai place. It was like a creamy coconut curry soup with rice noodles, what what I think was fried noodles on top. I feel three stars was very appropriate for my experience at red onion. A star for the ambience, a Star for the service and a star for the Kao soi.

Austin isn’t known for an abundance of delicious Thai food. in fact, there’s one place that everyone loves and that’s questionable. So on my trip to Portland, I politely requested all the asian foods. Red Onion was exactly what I wanted. No fuss, no fancy — just solid food at a reasonable price. I was so torn on what to order but ended up with Spicy Chicken & Shrimp with Crispy Basil. She ordered Pad Thai. We got spring rolls. Some of the best Thai food I’ve ever had. Take that with a grain of sticky rice because I’m not the authoritayyy on that subject. We were so stuffed and still had extra food to go. Weirdly, I’m envious of my friend’s dish. Pad Thai has always seemed so boring but hers was spicy, hot, peanutty goodness. This is one of those times I wish I had a whole table of people so I could have tried many items. It’s on my return list for sure.

I base my Thai restaurant reviews off the the curries. I got the red curry here at it was very good. They were very generous with the vegetables which I always appreciate. It tasted fresh and the heat level was perfect for me, but I love spice so might be a little much for some. I tried my friends chicken pad thai — the chicken is so tender, not dry like a lot of Thai places. The pad thai was perfectly made, not overly sauced or too sweet. Be careful because medium spice is very spicy here!

THE first Thai place that I have been to that actually got my food spicy in just the way I like it! That has NEVER happened in all my years of eating Thai food. I say Thai hot and most places will just dump on extra red pepper flakes. Yes, it’s ok, but what do slathering a meal with red pepper flakes really do? Not much. When I want hot, I want to taste it in the sauce, in the meat and veggies and quite simply, I want to have a good healthy sweat going as I eat some truly great food. Red Onion was that place. Several of us took in Red Onion after a five mile plus hike through Forest Park. My brother knew of this place and wanted to try it out. Great choice! Yellow curry, pan see ew, drunken noodles and rad na were ordered along with some Thai iced teas. I had the beef rad na and the sauce was more a broth than a thin sauce and it was excellent! Strips of beef, cauliflower, broccoli, carrots and spinach(?) in an oyster gravy sauce that was more broth and I used a spoon to drink up every spicy drop. Rad na is not normally a spicy dish. I did request it this was and as you can see, I was extremely thrilled how it came out. Everyone really enjoyed their meals and the others loved their Thai iced teas. Incredible food, great service and we WILL be back soon. Enjoy!

Lots of vegetarian and vegan options to choose from. I had the Pad Kee Mao(Drunken Noodles) with tofu and no egg. So delicious and possibly the best thai I’ve ever had. I am kicking myself for not getting the fresh summer rolls with tofu, and am eager to go back for their veggie/tofu stir fry dishes. The staff is super nice and friendly as well. They are very attentive, which is great if you’re a tourist and need to grab a quick bite. They also let me charge my cell phone behind the counter at no charge, which I greatly appreciate. Would never have found my way back to my hotel :) Highly recommend.

Walk in at 7pm and you’re lucky to get a table. Good sign, right? Unfortunately, the place doesn’t quite live up to the reputation that keeps its tables filled. The papaya salad was good but the rest of the food was only okay — very lackluster. It simply doesn’t have the flavors and spices that you get in other Thai restaurants. A couple reviews mentioned the place smelled like spices — I wish that had been true when I was here. Even at our table, the food didn’t have an inviting delicious smell. We ordered our food medium spicy but had to ask for chili sauce to give it some heat. We had the tofu red curry with brown rice(extra charge) and the roasted duck with egg noodle soup. Terrible service is pretty consistent theme in the reviews here, and unfortunately I can’t dispute the claims that service is at the very least — slow. I do think the wait staff make an effort but unfortunately, a lot of the customer service experience is lost in part due to language barriers. A little communication from them on timing, better ability to answer questions, a bit more attentiveness — these would be such great improvements to service. Prices are not overly expensive but also not cheap considering the quality. My preference is to get food truck food at half the price and double the flavor.

The food was average and the service was terrible. It took them what seemed like forever to even take our order. They didn’t ask us how spicy we wanted our curry and assumed we wanted it mild. Wrong answer! When our appetizer arrived, it was slammed on our table without a single word spoken to us. We finally got our food and the shrimp was cold. They didn’t return to our table to provide refills or check on us at all. Overall, it was just a really bad restaurant experience. We won’t be returning.
