Remember, guys, 3 days ago, when it was icy outside, or when you had the flu for like a day and how pizza delivery and Amazon Now started singing their siren songs to you there on your couch? Perhaps then you can imagine a long stretch where illness or disability keeps you from leaving the house at all. When getting around is more than just a hassle, but a real obstacle. And Amazon Now is like, really expensive. This is where Store to Door comes in. They reach out to homebound adults, get weekly grocery lists, fill orders, and deliver for free to their homes. They do it every week. Rinse and repeat. They help clients stay independent longer than they might otherwise, and establish valuable relationships and routines. Fueled largely by volunteer labor, Store to Door is one of those rare finds in the world of volunteerism: a transparent organization. What they do is so straightforward, and how you help is so very clear. They partner with Fred Meyer, and as a shopping volunteer, I’ve had so much fun. You get there early on a Weds or Thurs morning, and Supermarket Sweep through the store, filling the wish lists in front of you. Some other volunteers have gone through the lists before you and have figured out which aisle to find everything, so it’s even easier. Clients pay for their own groceries, and you get exactly what they’ve requested. If they get 3 boxes of Twinkies and a carton of ciggies, or if they get only grain-fed, hormone-free potato chips, no judgment. If there’s a question, just call ‘em. We got to talk to a lady who wanted to know what color duct tape they had. She was hilarious. And maybe I’ve buried the lead here, but when else do you get to go shopping with someone else’s money? You get such a fun insight into the different personalities of the people for whom you’re shopping, you get to spend a couple of hours filling up grocery carts and running around Fred Meyer… and you feel like you’re doing something good at the same time. All the wins.

Store to door has been an amazing service for my house bound mom! It is super affordable, allows her to have prescriptions and other Fred Meyer offerings delivered to her house along with weekly fresh groceries. Before store to door she was having to place much larger orders less frequently with grocery stores to keep delivery costs down. Best of all a volunteer shopper really«shops» for her, picking out the best looking produce and meat instead of just grabbing what’s on top. She has gotten to know the people who take her orders over the phone and deliver to her kitchen. A great great service for any senior or disabled person!
