Like Buzz Aldrin said, this is some Magnificent Desolation up in heah! Vintage North Portland watering hole — - no frills, no boo-yah, and remarkably few of the animatrons and trendy bois and gyrrrrrls. Hot dog! Speaking of hot dogs, this is right next door neighbors with my favorite butcher in town, Cason’s Fine Meats— grab some ‘cue, Theo sho nuff knows how to get the damn thing done, esp. when it comes to the pork ribs. Then head on next door to «Tavern» and wash it down w/some dirt cheap suds. Just another example of why I love me some No Po, and will ’til the day I die…

I must confess. I’m not a good member of the Unilocal community. I take and take and take, and hardly give back. Here is one of my first opportunities to truly give back. The Tavern on Denver is a phenomenal establishment. Period. End of story. I spent last Saturday night with five friends watching the bloodbath that was the Blazers first playoff game against the Rockets. We were just looking for a place to catch the game, hear the announcers, have a few beers, and relax. This was exactly the spot. Not only did they have a great shuffleboard table, but also a pool table to keep us entertained during halftime and near the end of the game when we couldn’t stand watching any longer. The $ 1.50 Hamms or $ 5.75 Hamms pitchers ensured that our sorrows were soon forgotten. After the game, they switched the TV to America’s Funniest Home Videos, one of TV’s lost jewels. After a few barley pops, watching AFHV is exactly what you need to have fun with the guys. It’s youtube, before there was youtube. Any bar that supports AFHV, is a bar I can get behind. This bar is exactly what you are looking for when it comes to a low key dive. Patty the bartender is a sweetheart and made sure we were always taken care of. If it were just a little closer in, I’d be there all the time.
