Yesterday and Tomorrow is totally a North Piedmont landmark. Jaq and Helen saved me on Christmas eve and their vast collection of treasures allowed me to find gifts for everyone in my family. They take excellent care of their garden, and often have things in their shop that I have never seen anywhere else.

I can’t think of a better place for my 200th Review! So an eccentric lady in a hat and a one handed woman walk into a random store after travelling halfway across town to put on a cast… are you expecting a punch line to this joke? Well, since the hat lady was my mom, the joke tends to carry throughout the whole day. Between her insisting on driving(badly), and embarrassing me at my doctors appointment, getting lost in search of a cheesesteak, and then stumbling upon this amazing shop-the joke was on me. But, she is never a boring companion. She walked through the shop, almost knocking all these amazing trinkets over, oohing and ahh’ing and asking the shop owner silly questions while she grabbed tons of unique items she had to have. They have all sorts of things fantastical. It seems it is a mix between local artists, random finds, vintage/antique items and knick knacks. Lots of dragon stuff which makes my mom go crazy shopping mode, lots of garden stuff-really not sure how to explain the genre of items because the only word coming to mind is «NEAT». seems like there could just be something for everyone. I bought a hanging glass item, a goofy looking turtle lawn ornament from the 60’s that looks like it could be from Alice and Wonderland/Acid Trip, and even a weird toothbrush holder shaped like a big mouth with a giant tongue to set the toothpaste on. It’s the kind of store where things just kind of call to you. I have no idea why I wanted the turtle OR the tongue. But they were meant to be mine, and the turtle seriously belongs on my deck. It’s bad ass. The whole freaking place, is just bad ass. The owners are very nice. They are usually closed on Mondays I guess, but let us in anyway. Considering my mom spent a small fortune herself, having them help her load stuff into her car, I guess that was a good business move. Prices range, as most unique items do. Some items were priced so reasonably we couldn’t pass them up, especially since most of the stuff was 20% off that day. Christmas is coming. You do not want to pass up this store.

I was in Portland for Megan’s graduation and wanted to go thrift shore shopping. On the way to her house, I spotted this place, and the name of it seemed like a second hand possibility. Upon pulling up to park, I saw YARDART!!! Those who know me are very well aware that I’m a yard art fanatic!!! The further I followed the trail of concrete, ceramic and terra cotta figures around the outside of the house, the more I spent. I like mystical and spiritual figures, so I got 2 gargoyles, a beautiful golden colored reclining Quan Yin holding a lotus flower, 2 «guardians» and a black cat – all before I even went inside! Leaving my «pile» outside, I climbed the steps and began wandering the different themed rooms inside. Fountains with Tibetan singing bowls, the first 7 verses of the Koran in Arabic on a plaque, dragon foot brushes, wall art from weavings to paintings, pottery and so much more adorned the floors, shelves, windowsills and walls. The owners were super fun to talk to and the place is an ultimate treasure trove.

I don’t think I’ve enjoyed a long stroll through a shop quite as much in a long time. Felt like I spent hours going over every item, and each time I’d turn around I’d find something else I missed. Beautiful items that you can tell were handpicked with an artist’s eye. I found several things I couldn’t live without, and I know this wonderful place will become a regular spot for me. :)

This place is a great little find here in North Portland. The owners are friendly and will match your chattiness or not. Just dropped by one afternoon on a sunny day and felt like a discoverer. The couple who own the shop have a remarkable artistic eye not only for beautiful, odd, collectible and funky things but also how to display them. It is hard to characterize the place simply. It is part garden shop, part antique store, part art gallery and a devotion to soulful artifacts is evident in all of it. Enjoy!

We stopped here on a whim. My friend who lives in Portland said she wanted to stop here every time she drove by it. So, we thought we’d see if it was open on a Sunday. It was! The business is run in an old Victorian style house right off of N Lombard St. It has a huge fenced yard that wraps around most of the house. All of the yard and first story of the house interior was dedicated to items for sale. The items themselves were as random and unique as the wings of a butterfly. Many local artists had their wares there, but also some people’s work from afar. There were also a lot of antiques displayed around, and plants for medicinal and sacred uses. One artist’s work took my breath away and I wish I had had the money to get one. They made these stained-glass window panels that utilized old small medicine bottles into them. I guess it took them quite a bit of trial and error to find the right temperature to bind everything without shattering the bottles. In the end I got a hummingbird feeder made from an old glass bottle with recycled copper wrapped around it in an organic artful way.
