Average americanized chinese food. There is nothing on the menu that would maker me go back. I’m chinese so maybe I was expecting too much from this place after reading all the reviews.

Last night was the last night in business for the Dragon Inn. After 24 years Cathy has decided to move on. Last night we got takeout and it was delicious. The restaurant was crowded and there were many more waiting for takeout, per Linda’s report. It was a lovely farewell. The Original Dragon Inn in Overland Park, which is run by Cathy’s brother, remains open.

Let it be said: I absolutely adore Dragon Inn. Yes, a certain amount of my adoration is sentimental in nature. Some of my earliest memories consist of my parents bringing home take-out from the place way back in the mid-80s. I remember clustering around the dining room table while the egg rolls and sweet and sour chicken was doled out, smiling faces and happy times. Think Norman Rockwell, only with a helluva lot more cornstarch. I’m almost certain the place hasn’t changed ATALL in over two decades. And the cuisine? Same story. While it may not be 100% authentic, it’s incredibly good. Good olé Szechuan cuisine, for slightly Americanized tastes. Every dish that I’ve had is packed with flavor, and always uses high quality ingredients. The egg rolls, as you may have heard, are legendary. I’ve eaten at a LOT of Chinese restaurants, and I’ve yet to have a better one. Brown rice is also available, which always scores extra points in my book. Finally, the service is perfect. Whenever The Wife™ and I come out here, we’re always greeted like family. That could mean we come here way too often, but I’d prefer to think it means that they’re just really great hosts… Fantastic Chinese in KC? Look no further.

I was craving some tasty eggroll, and so we ventured out to the O.P. to investigate the Unilocalers claims of deliciousness. Our bellies ended up full, but we left disappointed with the lack of deliciousness(and frankly, confused with the previous reviews). We ordered szechuan lamb, empress shrimp, hot & sour soup, and the aforementioned egg rolls. The egg rolls were the start to a «meh??» meal. They’re extremely thick(like KFC crunchy chicken thick), which is ok, but a little stange, and filled with a mixture of cabbage and the gross pink meat-like substance. I will never claim to be an expert on Chinese cuisine, but funky pink stuff just grosses me out. Next up was the soup, it wasn’t bad, but nothing special. Last came the main entrees. Both drowning in their own gravy, neither with much flavor or distinction. Seriously, when something has a «multiple spicy pepper» designation on the menu and it’s called szechuan ANYTHING, it should be flavorful and spicy! Needless to say, a swing and a miss.

The food here is just like what mom makes, provided your mom is Chinese and a really awesome cook. The egg rolls here are filled with crunchy, cabbage-y goodness, unlike the mealy mush in a wonton wrapper that get passed off for egg rolls at some Chinese restaurants. Sweet and sour chicken has just the right amount of breading, so you actually feel like you’re biting into chicken instead of a big ball of fried bread. Empress shrimp, cashew chicken, and lemon chicken lite(grilled instead of battered, light sauce) are all amazing. Entrees are usually big enough to split, unless you’re a. starving or b. want leftovers for lunch the next day. Lunch specials are a great bargain. Brown rice is available as an option. If you choose to eat in, the atmosphere is quiet and pleasant with great service. The wait for take-out is usually ten minutes or less, so technically you could program the number into your phone and call on the way over… I’m just sayin’…

They go out of their way to make sure everything is right. Take out was extremely quick. Food was always good quality, tastes great!

Some of the best Chinese food in KC, specializing in Szechuan style food. A lot higher quality than most other Chinese restaurants around here but still reasonably priced. Definitely get the eggrolls! I get them every time I go and even friends who insist they hate eggrolls love these! Their sweet and sour sauce has ruined me on sweet and sour from any other place.

I liked this crazy Chinese restaurant. The décor and availability of Pina Coladas alone earned it three stars. The food was good, though I found the sizzling rice soup needed a lot more punch. That said, we found good Chinese food in Kansas! I’m stoked.

I’m nostalgic because it’s the first place I remember eating Chinese with my family and taking a liking to it. I was maybe 4 and I picked the broccoli out of the beef and broccoli and only ate the beef(typical). As the years went on the family that owns this location came to know my family, asked how we were doing, we’d ask how they were doing, they’d give us extra fortune cookies. They’re great people! The service is unparalleled, anyway you look at it — even if the food isn’t the most authentic, at least you’ll be treated like the guest of honor. And it was here where I ate most Chinese dishes for the first time: Sha Cha Chicken, Szechuan Beef, Cashew Chicken, General Tso’s, Chow Mein — all meals served with pork fried rice and a side of crab rangoon. I was such a fool the first time I ate out at a really authentic Chinese restaurant in New York, oh my god, hilarious! I ordered crab rangoons and the man asked my Chinese friend«What is she ordering? What’s that?!» Silly me. Well, I don’t care what it is in origin, I LOVE cream cheese in fried wantons and I will ’til I DIE and you can quote me. They serve the food in great container-ing — it’s pretty cutting edge for a Chinese restaurant as far as I’m concerned: served up in larger, sturdier, plastic containers instead of filling up piping hot food into flimsy paper folding containers(which are fine for rice, but not for much else). I have no bad memories here, only good and I am grateful for its presence in my life growing up, honestly. We had Chinese EVERY Thursday and I would watch Friends with my sisters — the best day of the week.

Haha, I couldn’t help but check out the website… so freakin’ cheesy! I love it! Hmm… it also rates itself as «one the finest authentic Chinese restaurants,» well, it was alright. Authentic? Well, you can read the other reviews to see I’m not alone in my thoughts. I went during lunch, not really knowing where I should eat, but Chinese did sound good. So in I go and had to laugh too at the décor. If anything, I give this place stars for being so typically chinatown, brought back memories. Anyways, I ordered the shrimp in hot garlic sauce. Really good, although I keep forgetting seafood in KC means frozen. The sauce was nice and spicy, full of garlic bite. I can’t imagine what dinner time portions are like, since my meal was already big. Like most asian cuisine, it came out of the kitchen fast(which was awesome because I was starving). My meal did hit the spot, and for being under $ 10, I’ll probably come back again.

Definitely one of the top three Chinese restaurants in Kansas City. I agree with one of the posters on here that mentioned that the food was not authentic, but hey, he who is without sin cast the first stone. This is typical of any«Chinese» restaurant in the country unless you are in San Fran, Chicago or New York. Egg Rolls are large and seem to be homemade. Very tasty and they are a must have every time we go. Items on the food menu(typical items) are very tasty and Delicious. Chicken is fried crispy and has less batter(filler) than most restaurants. Egg Drop soup here is in par with that of Bo Lings. Fried Rice here is also above average. Chinese food in general in this metro area is lacking when you compare it to coastal or southern cities, but here they seem to do a good job with it. Asking for extra veggies gives it a good flavor. Definitely recommend and as usual at least go every other month.

The service here was great, the food was pretty good(not great) and came out pretty fast. I feel like the meat was of a higher quality than a lot of other chinese places. It got the job done, but nothing to swoon about. I wasn’t sure whether to give it 3 or 4.

The Dragon Inn is a classic Chinese restaurant. It has all of the Asian, Buddhist regalia, the ambient music, paper table clothes and(it wouldn’t complete without the) laminated Chinese calendar place mats. I know I was born in the year of the rat, but I always enjoy reading my personality description while I wait almost five minutes for them to cook my meal. The egg drop soup is par for the course and the crab rangoon is nothing to be ashamed of. I ordered the General Tao’s chicken and I was not disappointed. I don’t know what army General Tao led, but I would follow him into battle any time. As with any Chinese restaurant, the Dragon Inn’s portions are large and it is reflected in the price. Going during lunch hours is key to getting a healthier portion and a more modest price. If you want Chinese food you can count on with no surprises, Dragon Inn is just what you’re looking for.

Although it is definitely not authentic… it is great«white people» chinese food(I don’t think I ever saw crab rangoon on the menu in Beijing). The service is great, the quality is constant, and the portions are generous. If you are in the area mid-day…the lunch special are a great value. I recommend the hot and sour soup as well as the mu shu pork. Yum!

You could call this restaurant a hidden jewel in Old Overland Park. I went there on a Thursday night and there were only 2 other couples. They serve authentic Szechaun and Chinese food. Their General Tso’s Chicken was amazing, we also sampled Curry Chicken and Crab Rangoon. I was thoroughly impressed especially since I am not a big oriental foods fan. I definitely suggest checking it out and they have a website the prices are very reasonable!

Just down the street from us, this Chinese Restaurant is as old as I am. We ordered the orange chicken and the shrimp with snow peas for dinner and it made a very satisfying meal. We returned for dinner at the restaurant and ordered Sweet and Sour Chicken and the Tingling Shrimp and was utterly disappointed. The food was fresh and cooked well, but the food tasted bland and heavy. Where’s the ginger? the fragrant garlic? The shrimp toast appetizer was a very burnt and hard piece of fried bread with rubbery shrimp paste on it. Service was excellent but the kitchen seemed uneven and lackluster.
