I send my boyfriend to pick up Samosas from here every other day! They really do have the best Samosas in the neighborhood; recently I tried some of their Chai; which was really great and went perfectly with their Gulab Jamun. This store has a wonderful variety of sweets. This is a vegetarian restaurant, recently I tried their Masala Dosa which I found to be very tasty. I would recommend this casual small restaurant for a quick bite.

When they first opened up, the food was decent. Now I can’t stand even to go in here anymore. The staff is rude(including the owner), they cheat your portions, and when you ask them to modify your order in any way, you’re rewarded with a rude comment under their breath. I went in to get a half pound of paneer pakora one time and came out with only six small half pieces of pakora that must have only been a quarter pound or less. The owner is foul too; he chews paan in front of customers. All in all, it’s best to just walk a few blocks down to Usha where you’ll get much better service and much, much better food.

The chola baturas are great, definitely worth a try. The samosas are okay. The staff is very nice. I have not tried the other food there yet but chole baturas alone are worth going there for.

The quality of the food has declined in the last few years I’ve been patronizing Surya. The sambar and coconut chutney served with Dosa was comparable to the South Indian restaurants at one point. The vegetarian curries have become gloppy goo with lots of salt and spices. They aren’t spicy either. The chats like bhel poori, samosa and paapdi chat are poorly made. They are catering to a crowd who will just about eat anything without questioning whether it’s worth the money they just shelled out. This is a common flaw in most Indian restaurants. They serve great tasting food and once established they will cut corners on quality. I’ve been to many Indian restaurants in my 25 years in NYC since immigrating from India, this pattern usually ends in new management or doors being shut.

They can make even London’s Indian snack shops look lame. Vegetarian only, so don’t grumble because you really won’t miss the animal foods here, plus it’s a nice way to serve the broadest-possible cross-section of the community. Walk to the back past sweets counters and steam table. Place your order — when ready they will call you and hand over your tray. The Heavens will open, esp. if you order Amritsari Kulcha. Please tidy your own table when done like at any other fast food place. Food is so good, I’ve seen guys eat a whole Amritsari Kulcha and then go back to demolish an entire huge Masala Dosa like it was nothing! Vegans will be very pleased because it’s easy to avoid dairy products here except for the masala tea, which is made(the right way) with milk already boiled in, and the samosas, which contain tiny cubes of paneer. You can ask that your breads are not slathered with butter and they will oblige. Many Indian sweets are, of course, made of milk but Surya carries so many kinds that you can ask for milk-free and also satisfy your sweet tooth. Good strong tea, Fresh breads, Steam table food and Chaat bar available all day from about 11AM to eat in/take out. Fresh water from cooler always available as well as soft drinks and fun stuff like lassi and kulfi falooda. Two or three veg. selections changing daily(usually include one with paneer), plus choley, kadhi pakora, dal makhni and sambhar available every day. If you can’t make up your mind you can ask for a taste and they will happily oblige. Staff is kind, place is clean, owners community-minded and sensitive to religious and other dietary restrictions.

The employees are rude. They serve their own kind of people first even though I’m standing there waiting. When I addressed them about it they just nodded and kept serving other people while continuing to ignore me. After waiting for so long to be served, I walked out. The sweets are good but not good enough for me to tolerate the terrible service.

Pure vegetarian place. This place is good for lunch or a snack. I’ve tried the samosa chat and some of the vegetarian entrees. I recommend eating in because the bread comes out hot and crispy and is delicious. I could probably eat several pieces of puri. I haven’t tried any of the desserts, but they all look so tempting. My only drawback is that I’ve come in a few times and the tables haven’t been cleaned. Other than that, the food is worth the try.

Best Somosas I’ve ever tasted, and reasonably priced. They have little cubes of cheese in them and they are well stuffed. I have not tasted the other items on the menu, but now I will definitely have to. Edit: I was recently there and they have raised their price

Definitely well maintained for an Indian snack/sweet place. I heard it opened like a year or two ago. I ordered the chole bhaturey and amritsari kulcha. Chole bhaturey — It was delicious and steaming hot when they served it to us. It came with a bowl of chick pea curry and 2 giant puris. The puri that came with it were amazing. So soft and complemented well with the chole(chick pea curry). Amritsari kulcha — The kulcha was indescribable. It was just amazing. It was a kulcha(like a naan) filled with potatoes and onions topped with butter. They made it perfectly crispy and soft. They also serve this dish with chole. You get one kulcha but it’s definitely heavy. I would definitely come here again to get these dishes and maybe try something new!

Best masala dosa in NYC. I have tried many spots, and it’s hard to find a place with fresh ingredients and chutneys are perfect. Their sweets are also great and they have other vegetarian selections. Clean palce, clean bathroom, water and cups available.

SURYA got the most delicious Samosas. The service is average. I took out one star because they can be inconsistent.

Maybe I’m a little biased in that any form of Indian food is incredible to me — but I honestly loved this shop. Clean, friendly, and unappetizing. Kidding. Appetizing. A lot appetizing.

I dropped by for a snack but didn’t exactly know what I craved for. I saw the menu and decided on an Uttapam with no onions. I was going to go for a plain one but the girl who took my order suggested a vegetable one. When served, it looked and smelled amazing! I had Uttapam elsewhere but this one was much fresher and browned just right. The dipping sauces on the side was superb. The sambar(sorry wrong spelling) was piping hot and so tasty. I just wanted to drink it like soup. WOW! I also ordered a Marsala tea. That was great right after tasting the variety of spices from the sauces. The Uttapam was the size of the medium-sized plate so I ate ¾ of it. That was definitely more than dropping by for a «snack.» My snack turned into a meal(at least for a girl). As I paid the nice girl who took my order we exchanged a few words with lots of smiles. I told her I’ll be back for the Idli(also served with the infamous«sambar») and the Pakora(deep fried battered veggies). If things turn out right, I will surely get back on Unilocal and edit my review to five stars.
