This spot the best place in Richmond to have a good drink and higher quality fish in your food, not fast production food but craftily prepared food that rocks! Try the seafood soup ** you’ll like it! Fun staff and clean restaurant.

My husband and I went with some friends who suggested he and I get a sushi roll along with one dinner entrée. We ordered the New York roll and it was DELICIOUS. I’m not sure what these yellow crispy«things» that they put on the roll but mix them with the spicy sauce on top and it was amazing. We also ordered the spicy basil chicken which was also very good, but the highlight was the NY roll. This was plenty of food for the two of us, so splitting was a great idea.

A shockoe bottom must! We have been here too many times to count and each time we go we are never disappointed! Love going during happy hour on Wednesday or Thursday to get $ 2 beers and half off sushi rolls! Crouching Tiger Roll is our all time favorite and their number one sushi roll! With a new competitor across the street we know Sumo San will come out number 1!

To start off its walking distance from our apartment. It’s more of a locals spot for sure. The staff is super friendly and makes you feel super welcome. The sushi and avocado tempura is fantastic! I definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone who loves great sushi and a friendly staff.

Try the crouching tiger roll and the hot night roll as far as sushi goes. The avocado tempura is usually our go to starter. This place is what it is. If you live within walking distance for sure go here and have some sake.

My favorite place to drink in Richmond! Not to mention the sushi is delicious. No one else makes a gin and tonic the way I like it except for Sumo San and all of the drinks are pretty strong. During happy hour I have seen people order sake bombs but this consists of one of the waiters banging his head on the table wearing a bicycle helmet when he serves it. Even if you don’t like sushi the dumplings are great and so is the spicy steak salad. Great service and very fun atmosphere!

I’d say this sushi gets the job done when I’m craving sushi and don’t really feel like going out for it… It’s worth walking to you to pick up but if I had to fight for a parking spot to get something I’m not sure if I go. I think that sums it up pretty well everything I’ve had has been what is expected. Or better… I’d say try it if you’re in the local area for sure. When I have eaten in every one has been attentive and friendly but nothing extraordinary… Everything is to be expected. I haven’t had any issues and like I said if your local and yearning for sushi try it.

I’m giving this restaurant 3 stars mainly because of the long wait from the 2 times I’ve eaten here. I think the second time I visited, I waited for over half an hour. I noticed that some of the previous reviews have mentioned the long service wait as well. The sushi and other food items I’ve ordered were good, but nothing exceptional. Maybe I’ll have to give this restaurant one more try in the near future, but for now, I’ll be sticking to my go to sushi places.

Uhm… I didn’t really like this restaurant. My server was pretty slow and the sushi rolls were so SMALL! The other servers there were also pretty rude. Not worth it

I went a couple weeks ago for happy hour and I will say you cannot beat the prices. We got six rolls and a diet coke for less than $ 20. None of the rolls were amazing and some we just ate because we were really hungry. The service was ok, but really slow. We knew there would be a wait because it was happy hour, but flagging down our waiter was tough. The female bartender noticed we weren’t being served and she took over when we could not get our waiter throughout the night. She was really sweet and helpful!

This is the freshest fish consistently I’ve ever had in a sushi restaurant. I should be mad because I can’t eat sushi anywhere else! I’ve tried in multiple states in the union and nothing comes close. Add to that a laid back atmosphere and a feeling that you belong when you’re there makes this a business my wife and I will always support. We drive an hour for dinner just because we won’t eat sushi anywhere else! No hipster BS, just solid fresh fish EVERYTIME! Any way… The salmon sushi tells the tale.

Discovered this little place between the train station and the zombie bar while out for a late day exploration. Food awesome, seafood fresh, tastes great. I had the seafood lover dish(stir fry) but will be back for sushi which also looked great. Open till 10pm.

Great little spot, with a touch of class that can be hard to come by at a lot of sushi joints. I only had a drink and split an appetizer with a friend, but my Sakura cocktail was fantastic!

I’ve been here a few times and every time I go back, I wonder(sometimes aloud) why I was tricked into going again. First off, the place does not seem as clean as one would like when frequenting sushi/raw fish joint. Secondly, the smell is a little off and I worried about dust and other items catching on all of the random items on the wall… Although the waiters have always been very kind and quick to prepare the food I’ve had there, I would hesitate if you are a sushi obsessed one like me.

We stopped here for lunch after reading some of the reviews on Unilocal. This is definitely worth trying. The chef prepared a few hand rolls that were exquisite. The squid and cucumber salads were very good. And, the sashimi and rolls we ordered were all very, very good. We’ll definitely be back when in town.

Visited Sumo San after one of my favorite sushi joints closed recently down the street. After reading reviews on Unilocal,I put my head down and was determined to give them a decent shot. The miso soup was ok however it was little shaved pieces of something in there that I just couldn’t put my finger on. The sushi was alright nothing spectacular. The fish wasn’t as fresh as I’d like it but still good. I also got the fried tofu, I’m a sucker for the stuff. Although it was good the breading was bland and the teriyaki sauce left a lot to be desired. The restaurant itself coulda been a lil cleaner. But It’s got a divey sorta feel with a great«soundtrack» playing in the background(all 80’s &90’s). All in all I think I’ll return and check out a few more dishes.

I’m not sure how my lunch party ended up here but we did. Almost immediately my lunch partner started to complain about the smell. I think it was a psychosomatic result after reading Dawn’s review. I personally didn’t think the place smelled bad. Then again my nose in autumn doesn’t work very well. After the complaints about the smell subsided the focus then shifted to the taste of the tap water. Again, I didn’t think the water tasted bad. If that wasn’t enough, my lunch buddy then had a complaint about the fountain drink taste. Good grief Charlie Brown, take what you read on the internet with a grain of salt. Having learned my lesson about eating sushi in Richmond during lunch(read my Osaka review) I was determined to NOT get fooled again. I went all out and ordered this wicked Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon roll. I was perfectly happy with this and devoured it. We settled up and left. Would I return? I suppose I would. Was it a mind-bending tour de force of the taste buds? Not really. I had a perfectly normal experience here and would have to rate Sumo San a solid 3.

I like the old town of Richmond but always scares me when it comes to finding a good place to eat. Yes I am not familiar with the area and run down stores & restaurants are not very promising. On this particular day when I was craving for just a simple sushi and hot green tea, Sumo San came to the rescue. With my trusty Unilocal app, I typed Sushi nearby and boom just like that it appeared before me. Conveniently located near the Main St train station, I walked briskly and was the first customer. Ordered miso soup, green tea and sumo attack special. I liked the quality of the green tea and its richness. Miso soup was tasty. And sushi was pretty good. California rolls were tightly packed with little bit of rice and every bite was a full flavor of cucumber and crab meat. Sushi was fresh and tasty. First bite into the salmon is usually a good indicator. I saw the customized rolls but was not able to try since it was just a party of one. My next trip will include more exploration into the mystery of Sumo San. I really liked the atmosphere and the décor. I sat alone by the window, ate a belly full, sipped on green tea of pleasure and relaxed. Friendly staff and full of female customers. Now women are definitely more picky about food and if you want to find a good restaurant then see how many women are in there. Just a tip for the future.
