I took my family here a couple of weeks ago when we were nearby at a home décor place. Found them on Unilocal! They had a pulled pork sandwich with sweet jalapeño slaw on special and it was THEBESTPULLEDPORKSANDWICH I’VEEVERHAD! Despite what some other reviewers said, I loved their sauce!!! Especially the spicy Maamo’s sauce, so much so that I bought a bottle of it for home and have been using it on everything that I grill. My only complaint is that this joint is so far from where we live down south. The staff there were very friendly to us. It’s a small place but there is some outside seating and the little restaurant was clean. Secretly not so secretly hoping they open a much bigger location down south. Check this place out! It is a hidden gem in Riverside, family owned, and from the giant trophy on display has award-winning BBQ!

The bbq was really good; however, the service was less than welcoming. Placing an order was a bit awkward, no greeting(no hi or can I help you), just a blank stare. The lack of service or even basic politeness is becoming more the norm these days, disheartening.

The sweet potato fries are AMAZING! I am not a huge fan of BBQ, but everyone in my family said that the ribs were great!

Got takeout for a group of 6 people. Everyone loved the cheesy corn and turkey. Brisket was very good. Pulled pork average. The indoor atmosphere when I picked it up left something to be desired. I would certainly go back to sit on their patio though. In a town with tons of BBQ options this one holds its own. Might not win awards as a top choice but will not disappoint you.

Hawg Jaw has new owners and a new name so I thought I’d stop by and try it out. The inside is a little more updated and features nice new LCD menu screens however I miss all the family photos and homely decorations that used to hang on the walls. I know things change, but I thought it fit the neighborhood well. The food is good, but a little different than I remember it. Specifically, the cheesy corn is more of a southwesternish dish and less of a BBQ dish. I miss the old verison. The sauce recipes are a bit different too. I didn’t get the zing I was looking for off of the hot sauce. Like I said earlier, it’s still good, but a little different and will take a little bit of getting used to. One additional note, the sandwiches are now available in small, medium and large sizes which is nice depending on your appetite, which for mine, a medium pulled pork sandwich did the job.

Man! I enjoyed this meal. Royals lost, but I won. I got the half rack of ribs and fried pickles, my buddy got the same but with Sweet potato fries(which came with frosting??). I finished a bit over half my plate and had to quit. I also suggest the Maamo’s Spicy sauce.

My new favorite BBQ place. The menu is great! There is a nice selection of items to choose from. The sauces are awesome, the sweet potato fries are excellent. I’m going to try and taste one of everything one day. The staff is friendly and helpful and they have lunch specials too.

Visiting from California and this was the best meal in town. Its a smaller place with tables outside, but it was February, so that was out of the question. The service was great! I asked for a recommendation and decided for the pulled pork sandwich with mac & cheese and a side of burnt ends. It was arguably one of the best Q, coming form CA it might not mean a lot, but I highly recommend you to try it. They have several sauces and the menu has a wide variety and beer as well. Something that stuck out was how affordable the family meals were. 50 bucks will feed a family of 4 no problem. Nothing but upside and I can’t wait to go back on my next trip!

Gave it another shot. Sadly, it hasn’t improved. I got the burnt ends. They were as tough as jerky. But what really disappointed me was the grouchy gal at the register. When the customer has to greet you, and you just stare back, that didn’t sit well with me.

Ate here for the first time today. I consider myself pretty knowledgable on BBQ being born and raised in KC. With that, Hawg Jaw is okay. I say that because it was edible and for those who are new to BBQ or don’t have a very refined pallet it may be fine. However, it did very little for me. The sauces were different but not that great. The meat was underwhelming not to mention that it wasn’t all that appetizing. I also have to say something was off with the beans, I don’t know if it was the plastic container they put it in or the overpowering burnt(not smokey) flavor of it, but I ended up throwing most of them away. Worth a try but probably won’t be back.

So I don’t know what the deal is with the Unilocal page, but this is for Hawg Jaw Que and Brew, since the new owners took charge. I came here on a very cold day because it was out of the way for me and in a new place I don’t get up to very often. Very old school looking inside. The old checkered floor, red leather chairs and stools, like an old time diner almost. It was cold inside too. But kind of what I expected. I ordered a half rack of ribs and some fries for a side. They had a good selection of beer too. The beer is also obscenely expensive. Ribs were great, and sauce was great. They were a little fatty but had great flavor. The fries were also really good. Not much atmosphere to the place but you can tell they’ve tried. I’m a big fan of the craft beer/BBQ combination. There’s also not much else around Riverside. Pretty decent Que, but don’t know if it is worth the drive from somewhere far away.

Used a groupon to get carry out for a crowd. It was tasty and a really good deal with my groupon but goodness, with BBQ places being everywhere in this town, I don’t think this has the chops to become my «go to» place, even if I lived up in the area.

I have now been here twice since ownership has changed and they dropped the Fritz and added Que and Brew. Both times I have ordered something slightly different than just meat sandwiches or ribs. First time I did the brisket chili — wow — great very meaty. Great flavor combo of the spicy chili seasoning and the bbq sauce mixed in, cheese and onions on top and voila, eating BBQ brisket with a spoon. This most recent trip, I did the loaded fries with brisket. Huge order of fries topped with melted cheese, tomatoes, green onions, and a ton of tender juicy brisket, spicy ranch, and jalapeños and bbq sauce on the side. Just like the chili, a great flavor combo with great brisket crowning it off. Each time I’ve been I’ve had extremely friendly people behind the counter.

Should have listened to the review from Sharrla R… Ditto on quantity and quality, but she may have been too generous. WORST. BARBEQUE. EVER. Some of the meats were hard to identify… Never have I seen sausage sliced so thin(I think it was sausage) and we had a hard time locating the brisket since there wasn’t much more than a bite or two, and we only«think» it was brisket, but not really sure. Better meat from the deli at Price Chopper. How does a BBQ joint like this stay open in KC with so many options?!! Save your money(it’s not cheap here) and go elsewhere! I truly don’t understand any of the good reviews on here as this place was so bad… I can only assume those folks don’t eat out much or are family!

We ordered the Hawg Trough Sampler. It was $ 17.99 but only came with about $ 10 worth of meat & that’s being generous. The brisket had no smoke flavor & was very dry. The sliced ham had no flavor at all, it didn’t even taste like ham. The ribs didn’t have any rub on them nor did they have any smoke flavor. The burnt ends weren’t bad till you took your second bite then you got nothing but fat. We had a side of beans and the beans were over powered by whatever they had been seasoned with. The hubby & I couldn’t figure out what though. The place wasn’t very nice… There was a real loud consistent noise, wasn’t sure if was exhaust fan or what. Couldn’t keep flies away long enough to eat. Plus there was a stink to the place, not sure what was causing it.

Real good burnt ends ! Good sweet Potato fries, beans are excellent ! A little pricy for Riverside $ 14.69 but I enjoyed my lunch. And I’d go back again sometime. Lots of beer choices and interesting ones at that. Total hard ginger beer 5.3% alcohol alcoholic ginger beer, ginger root, molasses, pure cane sugar. Row hard root beer alcoholic root beer 6.7%

I don’t give many 5 stars on BBQ unless the food is phenomenal. The rib with their rub is off the charts! Their ribs are more competition style ribs. so they are fall off the bone but they are freaking good! I used the Maamo’s Spicy NOW sauce and it was tasty and went well with the ribs. I loved the burnt ends… they were moist and very tender… they didn’t have sauce on them which is a plus for me… I like to add my own. Their menu is very interesting… they know what they are doing here… I’ll definitely be back… and I’ll bring my crew! A++

My wife went to pick up our order of almost 60 dollars. Just a simple walk in and grab the food kinda thing. When she paid the bill the workers started giving her a hard time for not tipping. The cashier started showing it to the cooks and making a big deal out of it. My wife came home feeling bad and uncomfortable about her experience there. They did nothing for us that McDonald’s doesn’t do and nobody tips those employees. We have eaten here multiple times and even driven out of our way to get their food. In the end I won’t be making a special trip for that kind of treatment. There are way to many BBQ places in Kansas City to put up with disrespect. Very disappointed in their behavior.

Last fall I was visiting KC and I brought some barbeque from another place to band practice. Everyone was thrilled until I said where it was from. Crickets… and then a friend said, «oh yeah, that place is pretty good». I was like«well, what do you like», and that was burnt ends at Hawg Jaw Fritz. The burnt ends did not disappoint, and the cole slaw was exceptional with its touch of celery seed. The beans were a bit sweet for me, but they were tender and flavorful. The spicy sauce here is tasty without being hostile, so be not afraid. Also, they’re staying open until 8 now so it’s easier to pick stuff up for dinner!

Had a fabulous experience today at Hawg Jaw Fritz! The ribs were excellent, and so were the barbecue beans. As a unexpected plus, the seasoned French fries were piping hot and the best I’ve tasted in a decade. Favorite of their signature sauces: Bossman’s Enjoyed chatting with Kim and with owner Nick Silvio, who I learned also ℅-owns another wonderful restaurant, Em Chamas Brazilian Grill. Overall, Terrific experience! We will be back sometime soon with friends to try the«Hog Trough» Sampler, which includes just about every kind of meat that they offer.
