The jazz fest is a staple of the summer social season in Rochester. A great place to hang out to hear music, run into friends, and have a beer. The crowds at time for the free shows can be choking at times but this is also a sign of the success of this event. The free music acts can be hit or miss in quality and as other have said jazz is a loose label since many of these acts are not remotely jazzy. If you pop for a show at the Eastman or the club pass the musical choices are almost overwhelming and the club pass gives you chance to sample.

Fabulous venue for music, food & people watching. Since I’ve been in this city the last 3 years, i’ve seen a plethora of musicians that I have enjoyed tremendously. Grace Kelly, Regina Carter, among others, and the Cuban jazz rhythms of Pedrito Martinez, Manuel Varela, Jana Bunnett and Cuban musicians, Melvis Santa, David Virelles, Magdelys Sav, Ahmed Mitchel, Juan Pablo Dominguez. I am looking forward to tomorrows show by three more groups of Latin Jazz. Maestro Berroa among them. The different stages from free, on the street, to theaters and clubs all wonderful. Each creates the background to unique listening experiences. Cannot get better than that.

Way too crowded. I also caution everyone regarding the M&T portable ATMs. My husband wanted to take out some money on East Ave. The ATM thanked him but didn’t give him any cash!

The jazz fest is one of the best festivals in the city. You can take in multiple free shows every day of the week for 10 days. There is such a variety of different shows going on at all times, I try to go several nights and take in the sites. They have food trucks, alcohol, and many other stands where you can eat and drink as well. It can be very crowded, but if you don’t expect that at the most well attended festival in the city then you probably will complain about any festival that you attend. I don’t think the prices are outrageous considering the gouging that could potentially go on by vendors(and often do at other festivals). This is another great example of why living in the city is a fantastic option during the spring and summer months. There is so much great stuff to do(and often times it is free to attend).

Though jazz can take a back seat to some of the non jazz headliners(which is why it is not a five), there’s enough good jazz and just good music to make this a great festival. It is hard to overstate what the festival means to Rochester. It’s younger compared to the Park Ave and Lilac Festivals but one of the most impactful festivals in a town of festivals from May through October.

Five years ago, this festival would have easily gotten four stars from me. That’s back when they were bringing in multiple styles of jazz music — dixieland, gypsy, New Orleans, Big Band… I would go out several times to soak in the sounds. Eager to go back for more the next day. I’ve heard it was even better before I moved here. Big name jazz bands like Preservation Hall were not uncommon. Now, the festival features pop, funk, R&B, and several other genres. Some jazz, but nothing that excites me. I returned during opening night this year only to squeeze through crowds, be asked to move to a different spot so the person behind me could have a better view(two times, both at the free stages), and avoid buying overpriced drinks and merchandise. I was happy to see the presence of food trucks and snagged a few tasty items from them before ending my night with some beer at Acme, trying to avoid the crowds on East Ave.
