A wonderful narrow gauge railroad. Set aside time to take a tour of the grounds(machine shop and roundhouse) with a docent. As an added incentive, this railroad is on the National Register of Historic Places. Also note that next door is the Rockhill Trolley Museum. Note that the future of the railroad is in question as of the 2011 season.

If you want to go back in time, check out the East Broad Top RR in Orbisonia, PA. I didn’t even know about it until our neighbor asked us to go there. It’s only about 1 ½ hours from our house. The place has seem better days and needs some work. I’m sure the fare for the train ride doesn’t begin to cover the up-keep of the place. They take donations volunteers to fix up the place… they have lots to do. We rode in the covered train car which dates back to the 1880s and it’s in remarkably good shape for its age. Most enjoyable was a «private» tour of the yard, given my a volunteer. We were the only people on the tour and we got to climb up on one of the old engines and ask as many questions as we wanted. Really learned a lot about trains! A GREAT place to take kids(you can ride to the end of the line and picnic and catch the next train back), however, I don’t think they do school tours any longer. There is also a living trolley museum to ride!

This is a great little place to go on the weekend. it has train rides up and down the aughwick valley for only 12 dollars per person, for adults or 8 dollars per child. we went here on a field trip when i was a little kid and i still go back every year. the Orbisonia train station offers plenty of parking and things to do.
