I found this salon on Unilocal,and made an appointment based on the favorable ratings. I was assigned to Lindy and she was fantastic. I felt the value was great — and her attention to detail expert. I have long hair and wanted layers, this is kind of my standard cut and while it’s hard to botch, I’ve only had 3 long & layered cuts in my life that made me feel giddy with the result — this was one of them. I’ll definitely be back.

I almost hesitated to publish a review for this place. The price and service is so good that I want to keep it a secret. Jane (also known as Juan) is a Chinese stylist who went to Japan for a few years (because of her husband, I think?). She lived in Osaka and learned Japanese there. She had to be fluent in reading, writing, and speaking before she could apply to a cosmetology school there. Once trained, she worked as a stylist and eventually became the head stylist at an Osakan salon.
I’m so glad she opened her own shop here in Rockville. She specializes in Asian hair. She is well versed in what is the latest trend in Japan. At this salon, she also has Japanese hair magazines in which you can refer to when mentioning what style you’d like.
I got a digi-​perm here. I was met with a ton of compliments even after a few weeks have passed since I got it.
FYI, she can speak both Mandarin and Japanese. Her English is ok. We understood each other enough.
I probably wouldn’t recommend this place for guys though. A simple cut may take longer for guys here because they really take their time with people doing more complex things such as a perm, dye, etc.

Today I had my hair colored, highlights and cut with Juan. Love the result! The nice thing about her cuts is they grow out nicely. Products are very gentle on the skin. The salon is relaxing and staff friendly.

I got my hair colored and highlighted here this past Tuesday. It was my first time here so I wasn’t sure what to expect. The reviews I read prior to making the appointment were all positive. The place was not as clean as I would have liked but my overall experience was wonderful. The owner of the shop did my hair and was very nice. Her assistant was also very nice. On occasion, the owner had to attend to something else and the assistant jumped right in. They made a good tag team. I was offered water, tea, etc. several times and when I was afraid that my meter was going to run out and I would get a ticket, the assistant went to my car and added 4 quarters (the shop’s quarter). I would highly recommend this place for the friendliness, hair expertise and the extra attention.

I am so glad I found this place. Juan is awesome. She is skillful, patient and listens to my needs. I was the last appointment of the day and she was very patient and pays attention to details. Juan received hair styling training in Japan and knows how to cut Asian hair. I am definitely coming back. And thinking of doing a color at this place to.

I was planning to go to Ozuki but I found this place on Unilocal and decided to give it try. It is closer to my home and have a more reasonable price. The service is good despite Juan has to giving other stylist advice so I waited a bit with my hair wet. Juan is very experienced and patient. I like my new hair style a lot and will come back again.

Luidy did an amazing on my hair. Went in for highlights and Brazilian hair straightening. The color was perfect and she was very professional. Definitely recommend her.

HDZ has been opened for about a year now in Rockville Town Square and it was only last week that I found them on Unilocal.When I want a haircut, I want a haircut immediately. I was able to make an appointment two days from the day I called. I had asked specifically for an associate level stylist, where prices start at $ 35+. That’s very reasonable and I wasn’t expecting to pay much more. My cut was simple and I don’t have very much hair, sadly.
I was booked with Dennis for a 1pm appointment, but he was with someone else. I wasn’t seen until 1:40, which was fine because I kept busy flipping through the magazines. The lady who washed my hair was very nice, but there was no scalp massage as other reviewers have mentioned. The cut was nice and Dennis made sure to ask me about what I wanted and how I usually wear my hair. The cut and styling took less than an hour and I was out of there by 2:30. However, when he rang me up, he said he charges $ 55 for a cut, which is a lot more than I had anticipated and completely threw me off. I understand the prices could fluctuate depending on the cut and hair type, but honestly, my hair is flat, straight, and easy to manage. I didn’t want to make a fuss because I did like my cut. I just wish they would’ve told me beforehand, because I had asked for an associate stylist and my expectations were misaligned.
There’s free 2 hour parking in the garage. Bring your ticket with you for validation at the salon.

I came here on the day of my prom to get my hair done. I showed them a picture of how I wanted my hair done and they worked it out perfectly! My hair is very long and hard to manage so I’m grateful that they took the whole time to make sure it looked perfect. The owner and a male stylist (I’m blanking on his name but he was the only guy) worked on my hair. The service was very friendly and I’d totally go back to get my hair dyed or something big. A bit too pricey for something small like a haircut for me. They offer water when you come in which I find startling in a salon and refreshing. They made sure we had many options, offering my friends and me several magazines they had at hand. The décor was very clean and sleek which I loved.

After months of getting an average cut at a local place, I decided I wanted to try something new. I discovered Hair Design Zone here on Unilocal and decided to give them a call after reading the stellar reviews. I called in the morning on a Wednesday and was scheduled for a cut on the same day, which was great.
I’ve become used to a stylist asking me what I want with a cut and then having them just do what they were going to anyway, but not here! My stylist was Lindy and she was able to give me exactly what I wanted. She took her time and did a thorough job making sure there wasn’t a hair out of place. She even offered my friend a cup of coffee while he was waiting after she saw him yawn.
Since it was my first cut, I received 20% off the price which was also amazing. It ended up being around $ 35 with tip, but I’m more than willing to pay that for a great cut. I really enjoyed the service here and will be back again!

Two months ago I walked by HDZ, had some time to spare and could use a haircut so I walked in to see if I could get an appointment. Denis Yu was able to fit me in right away and gave me a great haircut, so I’ve found myself a new hairdresser. Denis is very friendly in a quiet way, an experienced hairdresser, has an artistic eye and listens to what you want. I can highly recommend him. He works at HDZ now also Friday as well as Tuesday and Sunday.

My daughter, 5 bridesmaids and I had our hair done for her May wedding. She and I did a practice run for hair and makeup a week before the big day, which worked out really well. Then all 7 of us had fun at HDZ having our hair done together on Saturday morning. All of the hairdressers who worked with our party were skilled professionals. Mae –the owner — had put a good bit of thought into hairdos for my daughter and I between our two visits. Everyone was pleased with their hairdos — see photos– which survived a long day and dancing til the wee hours of the morning extremely well. The makeup artist was also very artful and gave us looks that were just what we asked for. Would strongly recommend HDZ for services for anything special and will certainly be back there myself again.

Just got a digital perm here and the service and quality were both excellent! The owner, Jane, is very experienced and recieved hair training in Japan, she was very meticulous to each step of the process and listened to what I wanted. Since my hair is pretty thick, Jane had to adjust the perm time so the whole perm took about 3 hours but it was definitely worth it!
I was going for soft natural waves and noticed that the curls tend to be the tightest on day 1, but become more natural looking as the days progress. I definitely got a lot of compliments from my colleagues and friends on how naturally wavy my hair looks!

I’v been here twice, both gave me great experience. Juan is a professional stylist. She always listen to me, give me suggestions, and respect my decision before working on my hair. I actually brought my friend to her salon. After one try, my friend decide to do her wedding hair design here.
For Asian girls, I would highly recommend Juan since she has 10 years working and learning experience in Japan in hair design area. She knows Asian taste very well. Her salon uses a lot of Japanese products, which I think these would be better for Asian hair and skin.
They don’t open on Monday. Call for making an appointment is necessary. It is easy to find parking there. You could enjoy 2 hours free parking as long as you consume in any stores there, so don’t forget to bring the ticket to the salon if you park in the garage.

I had a wonderful stylist! She was very knowledgeable, told me off the bat that if I was trying to grow out my natural hair that semipermanent was the way to go and I’m glad I trusted her! She gave me a little trim too. They also gave me a complimentary speicaial hair conditioning and 20% off my first visit. Overall, great business and very professional! I will be back. Thank you!!!

Update: I missed having dimension in my hair color and went back to try a subtle ombré instead of highlights.
Jane was very concerned about potential damage to my hair from doing another process so soon, so she chose very gentle products that took a bit longer and required several steps. It was totally worth the extra time and I really appreciate how cautious she is! Also– again I will say that whatever products and techniques they use here feel and even smell incredible compared to chemicals at other salons. I’m so happy with the final result. It looks really natural and (if the highlights I got here are any indication) this look will last for months and months without needing another process.
Jane and Lindy are so nice and so talented. Don’t hesitate to trust them with your hair!
Every time I come here, I leave happy. This time I tried a single process color to knock out greys and tone down some old brassy highlights– looks and feels amazing. I don’t know what it is about the chemicals here, but my hair feels so much healthier after processes than it ever has at other salons (including Aveda).
This time I also got my eyebrows waxed. They still don’t have a separate area for waxing, but the woman who does it is so meticulous it’s totally worth the unusual set-​up they have. I’ve never had better waxing, especially at this price (I think $ 15). Plus she showed me how to fill in my sparse brows and create a natural shape with a pencil.
Overall they just really take their time with you here. There’s zero pretentiousness or attitude, just talented, nice people doing great hair.

Pleasantly surprised by both how much I like my highlights and how reasonable the price was! Denis did a great job. I will definitely be back! I do not have asian hair (rather, straight, blonde, caucasian hair). The little head massage I got while my hair was being shampooed was heavenly.

In need of a last minute emergency haircut, I called and they could take me right away.

I spontaneously decided I really needed a haircut and booked one with Liudy hours before they closed. Even though I was not able to make her preferred time, she stayed longer to squeeze me in her schedule. When I arrived late, she was very understanding and patient.
She first washed my hair, then trimmed my ends and undercut. Overall I am very happy with my hair cut. She spent a lot of time on details and I did not feel rushed at all even though that meant she stayed longer then expected. My only complaint is the few times my scalp hurt from the blow dryer being too close to my scalp.
I would definitely come back! She’s super enthusiastic and really tries to cater to what you want.
