Steak ‘n Shake

Ew… wtf Steak and Shake? I went last week with such high expectations and you failed me miserably. Not only was your mushroom burger pure grease… the fries… they were these tasteless matchsticks you tried to pawn off as french fries. And whats with no even being able to get the order correct? I asked for unsweetened ice tea. The guy at the window confirmed sweet or unsweet and I said NO SUGAR, unsweet. Then I get home and I get my first sip of sugar water. WTF?
I’m really disappointed because you guys were my go to location. I used to pass by your store longingly… looking at the variety of shakes you could make. Now I don’t think I can venture there again.
You’re going to want to do a quality check as that last burger was only liked by the flies that flew around me… (I got locked outside my parents house without a key– so had to eat on their porch — long story). Anyway, didn’t finish the burger as it was just TOO greasy, didn’t finish the tasteless stick fries and didn’t finish the sugar-​ladened ice tea since it was wrong. What a waste of money!

Honestly upset with the service at this location. It used to be much better in the past. Took 10 mins to be seated and it’s not like it was busy. A welcome or acknowledgment of us walking in would be nice! Then another 20 mins to have someone come to our table and ask if we’d like something to drink. Other people who came in 10 mins after us already received their drinks before we did. And the food too! They are honestly losing people’s interest in bringing their business here.

Sitting in this place for 30 minutes no water, no service, what the hell is this! I’m looking at the people who came in behind me being served, once again what hell is this?!! I never thought my first review would be a bad one.

I have a soft spot for this place and have to go when I’m back in the Midwest. I got my wife into it this time, literally going every day for lunch while staying at a hotel next door for a long weekend.
It’s nothing special but far better than Johnny Rockets or some of the similar chain diners. Open 24 hours and has some of what you expect on a menu at a sonic, etc. The difference being the low prices and the delicious steak burgers. They have all kinds of toppings and they are just the right size and taste much better than five guys and other competitors. They are quick to make them and the fries are also good. The fries are the shoestring type and always piping hot and add some of their seasoned salt if you have a chance.
Shakes are tasty as well of course with tons of interesting favors that are rich without being overwhelming.

At the special request of my son, we went here for dinner right before his graduation. We were seated around 6:05, and since it wasn’t too busy, we should have been able to get out by 7 to get him out of the door on time.
Got seated quickly, shakes came quickly … but no food. Other people are getting food and we’re not. We’re told it just a few moments more. Time is ticking. We’re told again, just a few minutes more. People who came in 15 minutes after us are getting their orders. but we are still sitting.
Eventually we find out there has been a mix up, and that the manager is making our order himself. At this point we have to leave in 15 minutes, and my son, who has about 3 hours between getting there early and then the ceremony, has had no dinner. I told the waiter that we have to leave in 15 minutes to get to my son’s graduation in time, and so they offered to make it to go.
14 minute later, one of the managers comes out with the food, and apologizes for the mix up, and we do get comped our food. My son has to eat his burger in the car as we head out to his graduation.
So thanks Steak and Shake for making what should have been a fun outing before a big night stressful and miserable for my son.

The kid with braids kept giving us a bad time placing an order w the speaker. joking w us. As we didnt know. Then at the window he tells us they cant complete our order because they ran out of lettuce. we were mad and they were joking around w another female employee. didnt appreciate it especially driving really far for steak n shake to be treated this way and killed my cravings for it… thanks for a bad
ghetto.leave that for the city… thats why i traveled to the burbs. go figure.

I’ve always enjoyed coming here until today. The waiter was polite and friendly but the food was a great disappointment. I ordered what I normally order, the Wisconsin butter burger and cheese fries, and when the waiter returned with my food the burger bun was over toasted and the hamburger itself literally had a half of stick of butter on it, (so much I probably could of taken it home and baked a cake with it) and the fries were plain and cold. When I brought it to the waiter’s attention, he took the fries back stating he did give the order correctly to the cook & as he was giving the fries to the cook, she gave me the evil stank eye lol. After giving me the fries, the waiter proceeded to show me that he did place my order as I wanted but I guess the cooks could not read it properly. #cheesefries

Stopped in for burgers with the kids, not too busy. Several open tables, but the hostess wasn’t seating anyone, he said he wanted to seat all the customers at once. The place is very dirty, tables and benches need to be scrubbed, the condiments on the table are on desperate need of a good cleaning, floors are filthy. But the worst is the service the waitress was incredibly rude, never got her name and was VERY short with us.

I was here about two weeks ago on a Friday night. Went through the driveway because it normally is the quickest option. Not so much in this case. I figured it would be a small wait because it was a Friday night and they tend to be busier but what I had in store for me was nothing short of inconvenient and annoying.
I waited for 45 MINUTES in the drive-​through! Yes, 45 MINUTES! This is unacceptable for a drive-​through to take this long. Nonetheless, I made no complaints and paid for my order and vowed to myself not to come back. I received my order and one of them was incorrect. They gave me the wrong flavor milkshake and charged me for a regular size when I asked for a small. So not only did I have to wait 45 minutes for my order but now, I had to wait even longer to get the correct one and wait for my change. No apology. No nothing.
You would think after this ordeal I wouldn’t return. But, I did. I said to myself, «It was a Friday night. It’s expected to be that busy.» So I returned two weeks later. This time on a Monday afternoon. Boy did I regret it. Yet again, I waited in the drive-​through for 30+ minutes. There were about 4 – 5 cars ahead of me so it’s not like cars were wrapped around the building. And still, I waited for 30 – 40 minutes for my order. No apology. Just frustration and a half crumpled up grilled cheese sandwich.
Safe to say that I will most likely just drive a further distance to a Steak ‘n Shake who actually values their customers’ time and satisfaction. This Steak ‘n Shake has been a huge disappointment on almost every visit.

Don’t go here! Worst waiters and service. Lady have is one menu but then gave others menus. Pathetic! Remember when you’re working for your tips next time :(

We all know what Steak ‘n Shake is! We all have a craving a greasy burger every now n then.
I tend to always start with the veggie soup! It’s a little on the salty side, but it’s pretty good overall.
I like the jalapeño burger the best, but I like to switch it up every now n then. I LOVE the shoestring fries with the pepper sauce. The best combo of life!
The servers at this location are usually friendly and check on you throughout your meal. No complaints in the service department!
If grease doesn’t agree with your body I would recommend you stay far away from this place bc it’s super greasy.
I can’t really speak on the milkshakes/​malts. I’m allergic to dairy so and the dairy I do consume I prefer to waste it on cheese. I hear they are fantastic tho!

Went there after a Chicago Wolves game with a friend from college. It was crowded, but there were a few open tables. Sign by the door said wait to be seated and we waited about 10 minutes. Waitress was nice and quick, so we ordered shakes. About 15 minutes later our shakes arrived and they were good.
Received the check and waited at the cash register about 20 minutes to pay, during which time other patrons were waiting to be seated but ignored as well. One of the staff tried to get the manager to take our money but apparently he was too busy in the back. When he finally arrived, someone else asked him a question he said there was nothing he could do. His forehead was sweating. He did not apologize for the wait and did not thank us.
I will not go back! Corporate should do a couple surprise visits and see for themselves.

Avoid this place like the plague, Atleast when the overnight shift starts! Worst customer service I’ve ever experienced, 10 minutes standing and never offered a seat when the restaurant isn’t busy? On top of that when we seat ourself, a person cleaning has the audacity to say your not going to be served since we seated ourselves, then says he really doesent care cause he’s going home anyway! Group of 5 of us walked right out Night manager is a joke, the whole staff seems incompetent and rude. Definitely needs to be some internal work done. Ridiculous

This place is filthy, food wasn’t good. I’ve been to Steak and Shakes before, and this is the worst.
My bun was stale, chili cold, bathroom dirty, filthy floors and bad service. Don’t come here.

I just went to go thru drive thru and waited for 20 minutes nobody said anything. So i went to window drive around whole building watching all employee watch went to window and was ignored then I knocked I window and guy looked up from across kitchen and yelled «we closed». I asked him again what he said, I yelled «we closed now Go on».
Appalling.!! If they don’t fix this location and straighten employees out its just only a matter of time before this perfectly located store shuts down.
Its actually maybe better off if they do close maybe then a company that actually wants to make money and be successfully while making customers happy will open in it’s place… Considering Location and space I envision a very busy Wendy’s there instead!

I guess the number of stars this place is given is dependent on when you’re there. I already knew and expected that the service would be slow at 12:30 AM but it was incredibly slower last night. My gf and I were meeting a friend and decided to walk in a few min early to grab a table.
We were seated rather quickly, and even though there were quite a few people dining in, I only saw two employees on the floor. Must have taken a good 15 – 20 min or so just to place our order. Our waitress explained that 3 of the overnighters didn’t show up, so that explains the poor service.
I’ll give it 2 stars instead of 1 bc: 1) The food was pretty good (as usual) overall & 2) The waitress was apologetic and trying as hard as she could. We probably could have walked out without even paying as we stood by the register for minutes. But, we’re honest and decent people so we didn’t opt to do that.
I’m sure the service would have been better had those other employees shown up. but all I can do is rate my experience based on how it was, not how it could have been.

One of the things I miss about moving away from the Midwest is the abundance of Steak ‘n Shakes. Naturally, when I was back in the area I had to dine at one.
The menu’s expanded since I last ate at a Steak ‘n Shake, with more burger and shake options. I opted for the jalapeño crunch burger, and an apple caramel shake. The jalapeño crunch was spicy, meaty, slightly crunchy, with the obligatory amount of grease. The shake tasted exactly like caramel apple and was a hefty portion.
Service was decent and our orders came out fairly quickly.
So far, Steak ‘n Shake is still a favorite of mine!

This is just like any other steak and shake, but for some reason the drive thru does not take nearly as long as other steak and shakes and I like it a little better for it. The food is the same and the shakes are still incredible.

Since summer is finally around the corner, my co work and I are watching what we eat, so we are ONLY doing happy hour shakes. O wait. that’s half price. not half the calories.
Any who, so this review is simple. $ 4 meal for a burger and fry add on a shake for another few bucks and you are in fast food bliss! I can’t knock the place for the high calories in the shake nor the grease in their food. because then I would be one of thoseeeee people.
The burgers are flat top cooked and they also have hot dogs and chilli. Classic «diner food.» Fries are thin and crunchy. I have to say its at least trying once or twice. Although, other than the shakes I tend to forget about this place, not sure why.
Helpful Tips:
–Please tip your servers! I see it too often there, because its faster food people don’t tip. The people come to your table and take your order, serve you, then clean up after you! TIP THEM!
–They are 24hrs.
— Happy hrs is 2−4am and 2 – 4 pm.
