My husband and I went here for our wedding anniversary as we love hibachi and expected a good meal. The sides were good, but the teriyaki chicken had many hard, chewy pieces mixed in with tasty pieces. At least three other patrons(besides us) at our table noted the same. The manager/owner said that since we had eaten the rest of the meal(the meat was served last, except for dessert), he would give us a «discount» and not charge for the chicken. Instead, he charged us for sides of noodles, soup, salad for a small savings. If you want to gamble on getting a good meal or sup on sides only, this may be your restaurant. I do not want to return.

Definitely not all that’s is cracked up to be but its not too shabby. The rolls are delicious and the atmosphere is nice. The deep fried vegetables are filling as well. Awesome weighting staff!

I was pleasantly surprised by the expansive bar and modern look of Hokkaido. I ordered the Bento Box A, which is a vegetarian option with fried tofu and stir fry, an avocado roll, tempura veggies, steamed rice and edamame. A huge portion for a great value! The bento boxes also come with soup and salad, as I believe most of the meals do. My server was proficient, and answered my question about the ingredients in the miso soup with confidence, but when I received my salad, the ginger dressing looked creamy. I asked if it had dairy it in, and she said, «yeah probably», but didn’t offer to ask or look. I didn’t eat the salad as I don’t ingest cow juices. That would be my only gripe about the experience and I’d like to return. I blame myself really, I assumed the ginger dressing was as it is at the other Japanese Steakhouses I’d been to. Overall, this place seems dope and definitely a good value.

Ok. I’m going to let you in on a secret…(whispers) I sort of like it better than the other place! They give you noodles instead of fried rice and these noodles are delicious. I still paid the few dollars more to get fried rice too. I thought it was worth it. But then again, I can be a piggy. Teriyaki chicken was only like 13.95. Pretty cheap considering you get salad, soup and dessert with it. Great entertainment, slightly different show from Genji’s. I took my couchsurfers from Brazil and Germany here because they had never eaten at a hibachi restaurant and they both absolutely loved it. They talked about it for about 15 minutes on the way back to my house!

Good establishment. The chefs are of the quality you would expect. Service was friendly as well. I believe it is slightly cheaper here than Genji’s but I’d have to say the food is just slightly inferior to Genji’s. However they do serve noodles which were quite good. The yum-yum sauce is also not quite as good as Genji’s. The steak and shrimp were very good but the lobster was rock lobster and lacked the quality you would expect for the price. Overall this is a good hibachi and is a close second to Genji’s. You get more value, but a slight less quality.

I’m not much for giving 5 stars but this place deserves it. Great Chef at the hibachi had us laughing our heads off. The food was cooked to perfection. Best scallops I have ever had. Definitely left with a full stomach.

Our family of six was completely pleased by our meals, ambiance and friendliness of the staff. We had steak, shrimp, scallops, lemon chicken and vegetarian among our entrees and all were wonderful. Our chef was great, and they recognized a special occasion very nicely. We will definitely be back!

For the moment this is the best Hibachi place in the area. This places makes Genji look like Panda Express. They also have Coke products so no more overly sweet Crown & Pepsi like at the other place. Cooks put on an amazing display for your enjoyment and they also put egg in their fried rice. Not like Genji which is just sticky rice and soy sauce.

The atmosphere was surprisingly nice! Excellent sushi and seaweed salad. However, the yum yum sauce is too sweet and the fried rice had way to much garlic in it. The service was excellent and the value was decent. Good but no genjis. I would give genji 4 stars.

Great place. Nice ambiance, lovely chefs doing the traditional gag-routine hibachi grill entertainment. Beautifully decorated, although you’d never guess by the exterior. The cocktail bar, while gorgeous and well-stocked, needs a full-time experienced bartender. Overall, the place was great for a night out with the family and beats Genji, hands-down. However; if you’re looking specifically for sushi, head straight to Sushi-N on Gratiot.

More of a 3.5, but Unilocal is still archaic and refuses to allow half-star reviews, so a 4 will do. I wanted sushi something fierce, and Sushi ‘N’ wasn’t open yet(OPENEARLIERONWEEKENDSPLEASE), so my girlfriend and I settled on Hokkaido. We got there and opted to sit at the hibachi. After looking at the menu for several hours, we decided to order the whole menu — not literally, but we got quite a lot. We each ordered a hibachi lunch(which comes with soup and salad), a Spicy Super roll, and inari sushi, which is rice wrapped in «tofu skin» with some sort of sweet sesame sauce drizzled on top. So, yeah, we ordered a lot of food, and it wound up being a $ 50 lunch. The soup: the hibachi lunch comes with a «clear onion soup», but I got hot and sour for a dollar more. The hot and sour soup felt like it was 400 degrees. It took almost ten minutes for it to be edible. I thought it tasted pretty decent(even though it wasn’t all that spicy or sour), but the tofu in it seemed like it was starting to turn a bit south — it had a slight funky taste to it. The salad was great because of the dressing. It’s store bought lettuce/vegetable mix with a peanut-based dressing on top. The sushi roll wasn’t awful, but at the same time, it was still probably the worst sushi I’ve eaten. First off, it wasn’t spicy in the least. Second, as another review said, whoever makes the sushi doesn’t plate it very cleanly. Third, it just didn’t taste that great. It was just«alright.» As the chef came to the hibachi he gave us Yum-Yum sauce and a gingery sauce. I, pathetically, haven’t had Yum-Yum sauce before. I found it tasted slightly mustard-like, which the female friend said isn’t the norm. Off the hibachi I chose shrimp and steak, both of which were pretty excellent, and the best part of my meal. Although, it’s hard to have shrimp taste bad when it’s doused in lemon juice and butter. The steak was also high quality, tender, and cooked how I liked it. My girlfriend thinks the scallops are pre-frozen, but I didn’t taste any to decide for myself. I like Hokkaido. I haven’t been to any other sort of Japanese grill to give any sort of comparison, but I’d come back here — just not for the sad sushi.

I can see this place running Genji’s out of business! Finally some quality sushi! Nice ambience once inside as I feel it’s location makes it a little more hidden to its true beauty. Extremely well kept up with and such genuine service. If you are hesitant, please do yourself a favor before going elsewhere and get your butts in here for some great food!

The food was great. It was a huge bonus to have Ken as our chef. He was amazing! He was entertaining, funny, and even let my son take a shot at the eggs on the grill. Such a wonderful experience!

I decided to try this place for a late lunch. I have been dying to have some good sushi. I would say this place gives Genghi a run for their money. The sushi was fresh. The rolls were light and delicious. I had the tuna tartar to start. It is good but definitely spicier than I expected. The scallop and the yellow tail were by far the best on my plate. This will be my go — to sushi spot now.

What a great place! The food is delicious and the service was good too. The chef was the best, he was very entertaining and Nice! It’s new, so it’s not full whenever you walk in which is nice(unlike Genji’s). Def will be coming back!

My fiancé and I went there on a Friday night for sushi and appetizers. I can’t review the hibachi but from the looks of it, the chefs were lively and the patrons seemed to be enjoying the show and food. Sushi is just OK, the rolls were tasty but nothing special and they were not neat in appearance. Visual presentation is key with sushi and it just wasn’t there. The ika(squid) rings were very good. Inari sushi was sweet and the tamago was exactly like every other place but sloppy in presentation. We still prefer Sushi-N and Hello Sushi. Service was friendly, we sat in the bar area at a table. One thing that was bothersome as someone behind the bar(not sure who she was, she was not dressed in uniform) kept yelling out to the servers and she was very loud. Also from what we overheard they were out of some top shelf liquors and plum wine.

Genji’s has a new competitor! Recently got some lunch here. I heard the cashier use a Japanese phrase in passing, so I guess they’re legit Japanese. That’s cool, unlike other places that have either Chinese or Korean owners. It doesn’t really make a difference though. The food is good, but the yum-yum sauce isn’t as tasty as other places, and they don’t use that awesome dressing that Genji has for their salads, the one that kind of tastes like vomit, but in a good way. It’s a weird way to describe it, but I love it. I remembered the place when it used to be that other buffet. It’s definitely been altered a LOT! It looks awesome, like the kind of place you take people from out of town to have dinner. I’d love to have a legit dinner at the hibachi sometime and get away from the«scene» at Genji’s. I definitely will have to try the other stuff they have. I want to add an update, went there another time and the manager was absolutely unprofessional, watching someone working and just muttering nasty things about them to the hostess and another server. Don’t know if he’s a manager or an owner, but he was pretty scary and made me not ever want to come back.
