This is one of the best mexican restaurants in town. If you’re hungry get the biggest burrito you’ll leave with leftovers! The pupusas are excellent and very filling. You can leave full for under $ 10 and that’s rare in this town.

We so miss GOOD Mexican cuisine since we moved from the Mexican border. Who would have thought we’d find it in St. Augustine? Clean restaurant, friendly staff and tacos like they truly make them in Mexico. We have been several times now and everything we have had is good!

Love this place, authentic, yummy, great service, super friendly staff, a great little side shop to get great mex/​elSalvador groceries (love the sella rojo coffee), Papusas and carnitas are my fav’s. Did I mention how inexpensive this great food is?!?

St. Augustine’s best kept secret. I had a biggest burrito and it made me cry it was so good.

A friend told me to stop here and try the food. He said to me it’s pretty good authentic Mexican. The fact is my friend lied to me it is absolutely great authentic Mexican food. I have not set foot in another Mexican restaurant since my first visit. My only regret is that I can’t tell enough others to come here and try them out. The location is not high style and the seating lacks but once you take that first bite nothing else will matter. The pricing is low and the quality is top notch. Eat here or forever regret it… it is honostly that good!

I’m from Honduras and I humbly consider myself a pupusas expert [:)] and this is the place for pupusas! Their pupusas Were better than some places in my home country. We live in Daytona Beach and my mom, my husband and me, came to El Carnal after a color Run in Palm Coast. We found them on Unilocal and because of the reviews we decided to make the trip, it was a good call! We finally have a place to enjoy pupusas. We also try their fried plantains with cream (a Central American Classic) which were as excellent as the Abuela back home. We didn’t try anything else from the menu but for what we saw on the other tables I bet it’s good too! All of the tables were full and the phone was constantly ringing to go they seem busy, that’s always a good sign. There is a small grocery on the other side of the restaurant that sells hot sauces, cheeses, and other authentic Central American items. We even bought the cream to take it home and ordered 4 more pupusas to go. The service is great and we felt welcomed, don’t be shy and come to visit el Carnal.

Ok… Here we go… This is GEM. Have you noticed how many Latin American /​Mexican restaurants always have the same things? I mean. Rice, Tortillas, Pupusas, Refried beans? Well this one is no exception… But this is SUPERBLY DONE! A masterpiece of Pupusas, rice, and beans. Simple things but perfectly well done. Please come, excellent food and service.

I ate way too much because everything was so good! We ordered the chips and salsa, two orders of the mixed (cheese, beans, and pork) pupusas, a «Biggest Burrito» with pastor (pork marinated with pineapple) inside, and carnitas tacos. We also grabbed two drinks from the fridge in the grocery store side of the restaurant.
I recommend trying all of these things, but don’t get the burrito if you’re not super hungry because it is truly huge. My favorite was the pupusas. With the banana peppers that they give you on top, they were absolute perfection. There is only one person cooking, another person just helping out. I could see from where I was sitting how they made the pupusas — all from scratch and all by hand. I could use some right now! This place is not worth missing!

I relocated from Maryland and discovered this diner by chance about 8 years ago and my family and eat at least once a week. The food is very inexpensive for the quality. The food is consistently delicious and the owners make you feel like family. I recommend the mexican sandwiches or «torta Mexicana» which is just amazing. Also, they have the best tasting Pupusas in the area and I should know since I’m from El Salvador. This is the best kept secret in St. Augustine. Just delicious quality food at an amazing price with excellent service. Just be careful because the food at this place is truly addictive!

Soooo amazing. I am Salvadoran and these pupusas are authentic and extremely delicious. My vegan brother was also able to enjoy soy tacos. The owner of the place was so kind and we will definitely be back again!!!

I have been in St Augustine for almost ten years and since we discovered this place about four years ago, we come back monthly if not weekly.
I go home often to California and Mi Carnal measures up with what I can find back there. I especially love the Tamales and the street tacos. The Tomatillo Salsa goes very well with the shredded chicken and chicken Tamales. The red with the steak. They make up fresh guacamole when you order. Order two if you have more than two people with you. It goes fast and you will want to lick the bowl. Though my wife frowns at me for attempting to do so. It is only because she would if she could get away with it.
As with all authentic places, you can get Mexican Coke here as they also have a small Mexican grocery attached. I would recommend this place to every one. Well, except for the one Aussie person we took there. She was not accustomed to food with this flavor. If you are not accustomed to food with flavor, then this is not the place for you.

This is a great find. If you feel like tacos, I’d recommend the chorizo – spicy and greasy. Whatever you do, at least try the papousas. They’re totally awesome.

Let me just say if you are in St augustine want a Spanish dish at a reasonable price you need to come here… it’s Mexican and Salvadoran food that is served there at the same damn time… yummyyyyy

Food is good and prices make it better. Horchata was good. Tortillas are not house made. Pupusas are house made, the cheese pupusa was excellent. Definitely are place to eat if your in the St. Augustine area.

I know my pups and these were some good pups. Their pupusas were DELICIOUS!!! I checked out the area on Unilocal for a good place to eat and came across this great place! So glad I did! It’s a little rough on the outside but it will not disappoint!

Wow! What a great place!
We were looking for a place close to the St. Augustine airport to have dinner before my son’s flight. He’s a huge fan of «Mexican» food so we found our destination via Unilocal.
We were greeted and served by the owner. He engaged our kids, made them feel welcome and more importantly served us as if we were a member of the family.
Get the chicken tortilla soup!
Get the Big Burrito (he’ll tell you what you should put inside).
Get the chips and salsa… the salsa is over the top great! So fresh!
We ordered another basket of chips with guacamole which was awesome, but the salsa was so good I kept going back to that bowl!
Everything was great…
We will be back!
