Family Video

There happens to be this Family Video within walking distance of my house, so after years and years of not stepping into a video store, I took the plunge.
It was nostalgic, like someone teleported me back to 1998 and I didn’t have to scroll through a list of electronic movies on Netflix while using a remote. When you sign up they give you some great deals: half off movies for the first month, free rental on your birthday, free rental for signing someone else up, yada yada yada. It’s not like the movies are that expensive to begin with … most new releases cost a couple bucks, «favorites» (like Forrest Gump) cost $ 1 and they have video games, too.
The employees are nice and fast, so you’re in and you’re out — unless you’re like me and have a hard time deciding between a drama and a comedy.

I rented a DVD from this location only to find it stopped and skipped at various points, even after the staff had run it through their clean and repair machine. Going back in the next day, I attempted to exchange it for the other copy the store had. After running this disc through the clean/​repair machine, I was told this copy «probably won’t work, either» and that the staff member was «not surprised… the older the film, the less likely it is to play.» I took my refund and walked. I won’t be returning.

Gone are the days of sleep overs and renting videos with your besties. I mean its only because I’m 37 and married. That would be weird now!
But one day driving by I said to the husband, HEY LET’S RENT MOVIES. SO we turn in get a membership and 15 mins later we are leaving with a stack of vids smiling from ear to ear.
It was so cheap to rent 4 new release blue ray DVD’s for 2 nights. Way less than renting them on demand or one of those type of services.
And you know what. the place was BUSY! Folks of all ages having fun rneting movies. As a kid I would spend so much time picking out just the right selection and then deciding the order to watch them.
The staff at the store was so helpful and friendly as well. Striking up conversations about movie choices and what’s coming out next.
We have gone back several times and enjoyed each visit and the money we saved in doing so.
I’m kicking it «old school» and renting videos! You should to!
