This place is a hidden gem — super-​fresh, local seafood that is reasonably-​priced; charming and helpful guys behind the counter who are happy to answer a million questions about sourcing, preparation, etc.; an impressive selection of artisanal cheeses/​truffle oils/​meats (including game, free-​range local chicken and Olympic Provisions!)/pasta/condiments/local wine; and, apparently, some great chowder (sells out really quickly, so I’ve never been able to snag some).
They also have some tasty frozen salmon burgers, wild fish burgers and crab cakes that are a staple in my freezer. And last time I was in they had boquerones– yum! Also, amazing smoked salmon and smoked oysters. Plus, they are happy to pack up your purchases with a bag of ice for transport.

Fabulous locally owned fish market in Salem. Family owned and operated since 1901. Fitts and his wife do a great job running the place, although the balance of their staff is top notch as well. Fish is all clearly marked fresh, frozen, farmed, etc. but questions always seem to be welcome. Prices seem pretty competitive based upon the selection and quality.
Nice selection. Staff is always willing to bone and skin any piece of fish. They have a pretty amazing little condiment selection, plus nice wines and beer.
Always a crowd, but always full staffed to handle the rush.

sorry to say but over the years I have used this place for seafood. when I approached the owner one day and call the head of time is saying there is a major problem with oysters I bought he said bring them back. the oysters were black inside from grit and so forth but they were dead. I did say this s is not good business for you. I did use the S word in explaining that the product was not good. I know the owner for over 20 years and he knows how I do things and I’m really always generally nice. but this was an exception.
he buys the seafood from the wholesaler that services Roths. and they’re cheaper.

This is the best place to buy seafood in Salem… period. They have the biggest variety of fresh fish and other unusual meats. The staff is very nice and informative. If you want a local place that has been around for 100 years to buy a great product… go here!

Smells like fish in there ;) Always fresh seafood, friendly prompt service — they care about the product once it leaves their shop. They will always offer to pack your fish in ice for the trip home to ensure it remains cold and fresh. their pre-​prepared selections are quite reasonable. Both the crab and the shrimp stuffed salmon are quick, easy, and taste great. Their crab cakes are good also. The hot-​to-​go chowders make for a good quick meal along with a $ 2 shrimp cocktail…
