Let me start off by saying that I grew up in a border town, surrounded by some of the best street style foods you can find. With that said, Pollo Asado was always at the top of my list and a food I frequented. Now that I am here in Salinas, Casa del Pollo has become my go to restaurant for my chicken needs. Now, I gave this place a 5 star based on the Pollo Asado only, as this is primarily what I get. I also wanted to balance out the low rating, as this place is by no means a two star. It seems like people only use Unilocal to complain about food, and I felt the need to speak up for this joint. Also, breakfast burritos are cheap in price and not bad either. I call in before ordering and it’s ready when I arrive(no chorizo though). Pollo Asado is the business here folks, don’t try to get too creative because this isn’t that type of restaurant.

I went here for a quick lunch to go. The great smell from the grill actually detoured me from the front doors of Subway, two doors down. The place looked clean and the clerk seemed friendly. I ordered a chicken super burrito. I had them modify it a bit, swapping avocado for guacamole(I’m ot a big fan of cilantro laden guacamoles). When I got it to the office and dug in, I was disappointed. The burrito was loaded with guac(tons of cilantro). The chicken meat was totally dry and utterly bland and flavorless. The beans and rice were… meh. Where the hell was that yummy looking chicken I had seen on the grill? I was clear they had pre chopped some dry, cold breast meat and just tossed it in the burrito… BOOO! In a city with so many great taquerias, why waste you time here? I wont be going back. For a chicken burrito, try El Jalisciense on E. Alisal… they are the bomb.

OH, there should be ½ star ratings… as this one I’m giving ** ½ Stopped by after a full day of running errands and I was starving. I had one of their posted specials – Torta del Pollo($ 4.99) which includes fries. Not bad, however, the pic shows a full chicken piece(breast?) not the burrito filling shredded chicken already prepared. In all fairness the flavor was decent though. It was a good size torta – chicken filling, lettuce, onions, guacamole all on a toasted bolillo. Fries were ok, I think the grease they fried it in needed changing though. All in all it was eerie that NOONE was there in the eatery. The salsa bar was stocked, chickens sitting on the warmer(hmmm, questionable thing here as to how long), and lots of empty tables. Service was«business-like» and quick. What I liked was I was able to watch the cook prepare my torta to make sure what was going in there. Standard combinaciones de pollo fair as well as the ol burritos standby. Beverages are also standard – sodas, horchata, tamarindo, etc. Give it another try… hmmm…tune in next pollo time, same pollo channel.
