The place was nice the service was good but the food was bad the salsa was bad tasted like it was out of date the nachos were stale the main meal had no flavor and the enchiladas are the worst thing I ever tasted please try to do better than that.

The food is very mediocre. They appear to be short staffed. The chips came out for a group of 6 in 2 tiny little bowls. The Avacado on the salad is definitely not homemade.

When we walked in, it looked inviting. I was looking forward to it! But, I can honestly say this is by FAR the worst Mexican meal I’ve ever had. It was so bland, but even a hard dose of salt couldn’t help it. It looks like a mess of slop on the plate and what is up with the bright red tortillas? All the food tasted the same. Terrible. The«salad» is shredded iceberg lettuce with a sad tomato slice on the top. You are WAY better off at a Taco Bell.

Beautiful place and atmosphere. Food was mediocre at best. Service was ok but we won’t be back. Too many other, better places out there. Wanted to like it, but tortillas were not good and tortilla soup — which my daughter loves, went to waste. Maybe you’ll like it.

I’m a fan of La Fonda. It’s been around since before I can remember. The service is always good and the food is consistent. Today our waiter was Francisco and he was simply great! He was on top of things, always came to us with a smile on his face and just super friendly! I like getting either the ladies special or the special #1. Let’s you try a little bit of everything. Love the guacamole salad. They’re known for their fresh made corn tortillas but I’m a flour tortilla kind of girl. Love their fluffy flour tortillas. Oh and don’t forget their complimentary chips and yummy salsa! Great place. There’s a reason it’s been around forever.

$ 3 Margarita Tuesdays. ;-) ordered a la carte 3 shrimp fajita tacos on corn tortillas and they were absolutely delicious. Fresh/vibrant and rustic ingredients used and quiet atmosphere. Perfect place to take a date. The bar tender gave me a discount simply because the tacos took about 20 mins to arrive. However, the cleanliness of the bathrooms need much improvement.

La Fonda has been part of the Oak Hills community for as long as I can remember. I had the luck of living literally down the street from the restaurant during college, meaning I got to eat here frequently. Since marrying and moving, my husband and I recently came back to visit San Antonio and visited a few old haunts – La Fonda included. Per usual, the food was absolutely delicious. Their queso is some of the best on this planet – and I’ll argue it to the death. Service can be a little slow when the restaurant is terribly full, but generally this is a wonderful neighborhood spot to grab a few beers, some chips, and a big, delicious Mexican meal!

When we first walked in we were unsure if we should sit ourselves or not(there was a hostess table) so we just kind of stood there and looked around for someone. Finally the bald mustached bar tender sat is at a table and an older lady came to bring us chips and salsa. Chips were good, salsa was delicious! I love garlic though. My boyfriend thought the salsa was too garlic-y. Anyway, after we ordered we talked and looked around and noticed that the wait staff were hustling and bustling and wondered if it was like this every night. Oh well. Our food came and it was tasty! The rice was really great! Right at the last bite my boyfriend took there was a piece of PLASTICINHISFOOD!!! He pulled it out of his mouth and showed the waitress. She took it out of his hand and scurried away. What the heck? No apology, no comp, nothing. Clearly they don’t care about making their customers happy. I talked to the lady at the front and she said the manager quit and it was crazy tonight. I could tell, but there was bits of plastic in our food! She offered her apology. The owner actually called me that same night(around 8pm) and told me he will be sending me a gift card to return. Have not received it. Bummer. I really loved the salsa & atmosphere.

Been her several times. May not come back if Elizabeth is behind the bar again. Rude, unknowledgable with drinks, and was inattentive(spent more time in the back then at the bar) At one point when the wife and I were ordering drinks she rudely stated that«it was a simple yes or no answer if [we] wanted another round»…RUDE. This place isn’t a no go. Great happy hour, just don’t expect any common courtesy if Elizabeth is your bartender…

I love the service here. Elizabeth is the best, we always get her when we come here. And the food and margaritas are great!

I’m giving La Fonda a 4 for atmosphere! They really know how to make the most of a brick building. The brick buildings, you know them, the beige brick, boxy-like structures littered all over San Antonio. But this brick box had style! With the flat roof, fiesta lamps and the magenta stained glass it’s just the coolest! But alas I am a sucker for retro and with the faded neon sign and tiki mugs at the bar it sealed the deal for me. The place had a fresh appeal too, colorful paintings adorned the walls and some sky windows kept it well lit. Some parts of the restaurant are a little too well lit, like the place where they sat me which had this bright light shining down on me. I could actually feel the heat from it and while in winter this would be nice, in the summer, well not so good. The waitress who attended me was very polite and informed me of the special. Where I sat(the left side) they did not offer lunch specials. I decided to have the chicken chimichanga. It was tasty with queso inside, but little on the wet side I thought. The plate came with rice and beans. The rice was fluffy and I liked that the beans were whole beans and not re-fried beans. I just had water and my total bill before tip came out to $ 7.57. If that is not enough food for you they also give you a basket full of chips and some salsa. Chips! they are always my downfall when it comes to healthier eating… oh well.

Normally I don’t write negative Unilocal reviews but the poor service and attitudes of the folks at La Fonda Oak Hills(with the exception of the bald mustached bartender, he was cool) warrant this one. Poor service. OK Food. No desire to make sure that customers have a positive experience. Owner sat at the bar watching football while the general manager was very rude to us over a gift card that clearly stated no expiration date. Have no issue with them not accepting this item, but do have an issue with a general manager being extremely rude to us as customers. In a city where Mexican Food is a dime a dozen, you would think these folks would want to do better. Will not recommend that anyone go here. A very mediocre and regretful experience.

Enjoyed La Fonda at Oak Hills again this past weekend. We hadn’t been there for awhile, but it’s still as good as ever! The tacos are wonderfully unique and delicious. And the little teaspoon of wine vinegar on top of the guacamole salad is the perfect complement. Not to mention the wonderful tacos. The tamales this time were so-so, but who cares? Everything else was a solid 10 on a 10-point scale, including fast, attentive service. Kudos to John Barry and his staff!

The food is delicious. My all time favorite is the California fish taco plate or chicken enchiladas. Their margaritas are strong and fresh… You can taste the fresh squeezed lime juice. They will be catering my wedding in November and the owner has put so much time and effort into organizing my special day. Also, they just started serving onion rings that rival Chester’s hamburgers… Not to mention their delicious new chicken sandwich that comes with bacon and avacado on it. Love it!

This is a February 2014 update on my earlier review. La Fonda offers Express Lunch options for $ 5.95, but they only serve it on one side of the dining room, and you have to make a point of asking to be seated there. There are six choices, all with rice and beans(or R&B as the table-card menu puts it). I ordered the quesalitas, which turned out to be about 9 tortilla chips with cheese sauce. With rice and beans and reasonably good corn tortillas. The quesalitas were neither particularly good or particularly hot. .. my companion’s enchiladas were a much better choice. If this was the only time I’d eaten here, I’d be hard pressed to give it more than a 2. But cheap is good also.

I love this place. Especially on Tuesday night when Margaritas are $ 3.00 each. Ask for Greyby. Super personable and wonderful to chat with. Also on Tuesday night there is live music. An excellent guitar duo playing beautiful soft music hits. It’s good background music and doesn’t get in the way of a good conversation. This is old school Mexican food. Made from the same Berry family recipes used since the 1930. It is not fancy, just good food. I’ve had enchiladas, fish tacos, and steak and fajitas. It’s all good. But don’t forget the margaritas!

I love La Fonda! I’ve have been coming to La Fonda all my life. A few of the older waitresses have known me since I was a child. I even had my wedding rehearsal dinner here. Food was always fresh and the service was always exceptional. That’s why it tears the heart out of me to give them 3 stars. The last 2 times my wife and I ate here have left me a bit concerned. And my last visit has prompted this review. The service has slow which is unusual for La Fonda. We were one of 3 tables on our side of the restaurant at the time, so it was not crowded. Our waitress brought out chips and salsa which are usually excellent, however this time our chips were stale. We stopped a passing waiter to ask for fresh chips and he told us that is just the way their chips are. Really? I don’t think so! Go get me fresh chips! STRIKE1! Bowl of queso came out and was cold. STRIKE2! My wife ordered the enchilada plate and I had the super nachos which are our usual favorites. When our food finally came out it was cold. Our plates were piping hot, but the food was cold? How is that possible unless your serving me old food? STRIKE3! I hope this is just a slump for La Fonda because this has been one of my «go to» restaurants for good San Antonio Mexican food. Please La Fonda Management, don’t let your food quality go down!

Bf and I just got back from a date night and we decided to try out La Fonda after hearing such good things about it. It is a bit out of the way off Fredericksburg Road which is nice, it feels a bit secluded, especially if you sit out on the patio. We were sat inside and the décor is definitely outdated, but I never judge a book by its cover. Firstly, if you’re a lady — don’t wear a skirt or dress here, the chairs are sooooooo uncomfortable. I wore a dress here yesterday and the entire time, my butt was hurting, LOL not a big deal. but I definitely know better for next time. The woman at the front was really friendly and had on Fiesta attire, flowers in her hair, etc. very cute! Our server wasn’t bad. He wasn’t over friendly but wasn’t too stern. He was on-top of refilling our beverages and getting whatever we needed. My bf got a margarita and was definitely tipsy after finishing one which is not normal for him. It was pretty strong which is a bonus, we compared it to a margarita from Cha Chos, lots of alcohol, they definitely don’t gip you here. The chips and salsa aren’t bad. The salsa is pretty hot so if you like it mild you may not like it. I love how they brought the salsa out in a little container, it was really cute. We ordered some guacamole and it was very yummy. I’d definitely recommend if you like guacamole to get it here. Bf and I shared the Fajita Sampler which comes with shrimp, chicken and beef, we got the one that serves two, which is PLENTY for two people and we eat quite a lot. It could probably feed three people. The tortillas were fresh and homemade which is awesome, they were very tasteful. We were so full we decided to go against getting a dessert but next time will definitely HAVE to try one! All-in-all not a bad experience at all. I’d probably come back here but only for a special occasion like date night, it’s quite top end when it comes to Mexican food and I’d probably choose Pappasitos over La Fonda.
