I was raised in San Antonio and went off after college and had a 20-year military career. I’m glad I am back for many reasons, but one definitely is a Luby’s visit every couple of months. While I have gone to various, to include some in Austin, I especially wanted to take the time and Unilocal my recent visit to the #8 location in San Antonio. While the food choices are always excellent and plenty to select from, the difference this visit made was the staff. Everyone seems to have a genuine passion for what they do and ensuring customer satisfaction. Of particular note was our waitress — Carmen. She was so attentive to ensure we had everything we needed. And prior to departure, she fixed me up a to go tea. I watched her as she went from area to area helping everyone. I am a firm believer that it is the staff that makes the place. It makes people keep coming back. And finally, thank you Luby’s for acknowledging my service to the country and giving me a 10% discount.

Least favorite Lubys in SA. The dining room smells sour and the food to go is a very small portion. Go to the one off Huebner or 1604.

Menudo on Sunday morning was the bomb. I also enjoyed the feast of meats. Yes. The picture does no justice. I just realized how strange that sounds, but yes… the menudo was great.

The breakfast was not satisfactory. Cold eggs, greasier than normal toast and sausage that made me stop in the middle of the meal. Offering all you can eat breakfast for $ 6.95 but turning out at $ 9 plus with the addition of a single cup of coffee. Honestly, the coffee was tasty but I’ll not eat Luby’s breakfast anymore.

I’ve been here a couple times since my last review just to make sure I wasn’t giving a biased one. It seems like they’ve really taken a lot of efforts to step up their customer service, communication and how they will serve the food. I stopped by today for the Tetrazzini that and had a very pleasant experience with the drive thru lady. She was super nice and attentive and we had a good conversation while we waited for the food to come. She asked if I needed any extra condiments or napkins and was just the nicest person ever. Since I’ve been here several times since my last year you I can say that things are definitely improving here and the macaroni and cheese was by far the best it’s ever been that actually had flavor! Keep up the good work!!!

Excellent service and the food is good too. The servers run around like crazy because they are busy but they do make sure you get what you need. Our drinks never hit bottom and I got complimentary coffee to go with my carrot cake. Also, evidently kids eat free on Saturdays. That’s another plus. For a family of 4 this place can get pricey to get everything you want. Still, good service is a plus in my book and they definitely have that.

Had pinto beans and mashed potatoes. Asked for a piece of jalapeño cornbread but wasn’t ready. Asked how long before it would be ready, but was not told, just given a nunber. Finished eating before it was ready. Asked for it to be taken off my bill. Was told it would take three days to post to my credit card. Said the manager should just give me the $ 0.39. Did not happen.

This used to be my favorite Lubys in town. Not anymore… they were not prepared for the 5:00 rush. Only 2 people working the line, a lot of the food wasn’t ready yet either. We wanted the Bourbon chicken and they didn’t have ready. That was the special of the day or month, wasn’t sure of which. Although the manager did bring some over for free when it was ready. The majority of the food was cold, old and the cabbage was extremely salty. They also didn’t have the millionaire pie which was their monthly special. Their icebox pie tasted weird also. Probably will not return to this Lubys. Oh and no garlic bread either!!!

I wish I could give this less than one star. I came with my family for breakfast– and our food was cold and stale. They started putting out jello and dessert at 9am– and my son asked for some. They then came and said that we had to pay for it because it was a lunch item. At 9am? Whatever. The pie as grabbed was crusty– obviously from the day before. My son ate the pancakes– and they made him very ill. He vomited them back up at the table before we even got a chance to eat. I went up to ask the people at the buffet a question– they told me the heat aspect of the buffet was broken– and that’s why the food was so bad. I will never return– and I tell everyone I know not to bother.

Luby’s is a place that brings cherishable memories of served food ranging from the classics to the newbie dishes. The one stop meal customization can be advantageous if you have conditions. This place is for everyone of all kinds to go!

I have been here several times without incident, but today I was disappointed. The main thing I don’t like about Luby’s in general is that they wrap their silverware in cloth napkins. My napkin today stunk so I refused to eat off the silverware, instead I chose to use a plastic fork I saw at the checkout station. My second complaint today is that the plates were dirty. When I ordered my fried fish, the lady serving me picked up a plate, saw it was dirty and replaced it with a 2nd plate. The 2nd plate was also dirty but she proceeded to serve me using the 2nd plate. When I asked her if the plate was dirty she looked at me, put it down and grabbed a 3rd plate that had remnant’s of something green(spinach or collard greens possibly) on it. Instead of making a fuss, I went with it and asked for my side order to be put in a different bowl so nothing was touching the caked on leftovers. I like Luby’s food but will be trying a different location next time.

You can find anything here that’s good. Fish, chicken fried steak, chicken fried chicken, roast beef, ham, roasted chicken. Oh and their sides cabbage, green beans, mashed potatoes(oohhh especially the mashed potatoes, they got skins in them!, corn, black eyed peas, rice, baked potato. Breads like yeast rolls, corn muffins, garlic bread. Amazing desserts like chocolate icebox pie, strawberry cheesecake, Jello gelatin. It makes all the cafeteria food you had in school taste like crap in comparison. Now if only they’d get rid of the servers so I can refill my own drinks because they really aren’t needed. Oh and lower the prices too please!

OVERPRICEDSUBSTANDARDCAFETERIAFOOD. It boggles my mind that people continue to spend their hard earned money on cafeteria food that is VERY overpriced from Luby’s! On Christmas Day 2011, I ordered a «fish plate,» which consisted of about 2 measly ounces of fish, a few tiny scoops of rice, a tiny«roll» and eggplant. The total? EIGHTSOMETHINGDOLLARS. This was hardly a meal which filled me up. Luby’s is simply overpriced cafeteria food. For what I paid for and for what I got, It was highway robbery. I’ll never return to Luby’s again. Unless, they lower their prices.

I’ve always loved Luby’s and always will. You can’t go wrong with fried chicken/steak, fried okra, macaroni and cheese, roll, fruit salad, and a slice of coconut cream/meringue pie. Great homestyle cooking that far surpasses the likes of Hometown Buffet. Just fantastically basic.

I wrote this review on 4/2010, but my I can’t get into my old account, so I thought I’d make sure to post again. I grew up eating at Luby’s. We had 6 kids in our family and this was the only place we felt comfortable going to for special occasions. I just went back last week to Texas and ate at this Luby’s. It was amazing, like I remember, except the service has improved. My waiter was on it. He made sure we had what we needed. I had the fried fish with tartar sauce and fried okra. It was delicious. Luby’s is one of the reasons I look forward to Texas. I hope it’s always there.

What’s not to love about Lubys?! It’s a little pricey but it’s the closest thing to a home cooked meal. The service is always excellent and the quality of food is usually pretty good given the mass quantities they put out. Plain and simple I love Lubys!

I thought the concept was genius, especially for the cookie cutter midwest families with 2.59 children; it’s a cafeteria line for both adults and youth and the food wasn’t that bad. Good old Luby’s Cafeteria. This one was the one I went to the most when I lived in San Antonio. It’s probably better that they don’t exist in areas like SF, because you’re not supposed to do a fancy version of country fried steak, fried okra and jello as a dinner(which btw was my favorite). It’s nice to see that it’s expanding and now a staple of Texas.
