Excellent food, very nice atmosphere. I have been eating at Mencius since they opened and I have never had a bad meal there. The price is right too!!! can’t beat that!!!

Ok so I have heard quite a bit of things about this place and I decided to give it a try. I went with my daughter for lunch and we were surprised at he amount of people that were in the restaurant at 11 in the morning. I ordered the chicken and Pad Thai and it came with fried rice. On the side I ordered the velvet corn egg drop soup. My daughter had the combination lo mein and said that it was alright. Over all for the price the food was just ok. I would have liked my dish to have had a little bit of vegetables and more flavor but it just didn’t. If you’re in a pinch and need a place to eat consider this place but for truly great Chinese this is not what I would consider.

This is one of my favorite Chinese places it’s not an authentic Chinese restaurant it’s pretty basic but they’re food and service is great! They also have a sushi bar and have great lunch specials. Recommend for any Chinese food craving

Mencius is the best Chinese food in San Antonio. I’ve been eating there for years and I’m never disappointed. Great taste, great service, and great people. Egg rolls are top notch, sesame chicken(sesame anything, really) is delicious, and even the lighter dishes(i.e. shrimp with snow peas) are flavorful. Highly recommend it!

Disgusting!!! No flavor on anything. The sauces and soups are all gummy, the rice is mushy, the chicken is bland and flavorless. I came here because nowhere else was open nearby on Xmas and the trip cost me spending the day in the lavatory. If you’re looking for a quick way to flush your system then by all means come here, otherwise stay away. Instead try Lai Wah’s or Yum Wok.

Ambience absolutely wonderful food. special ordered dinner items given at lunchtime… attentive service great conversation with the neighbors only thing … in the year 2015 I have found since I cannot eat my entire meal. I have ¾ of my meals to go… lately waiters simply bring a to-go container and throw it on the table… as if The food is contagious and are not willing to touch it. I thought it was a new policy for 2015 when I asked waiter«Aaron» said some fancier restaurants had standing policies that waiters are to pack it up for the customer but here we don’t do that. So you’re telling me that waiters just make up their mind if they want to pack or not. interesting. Take could affect you’re tip in a negative manner… don’t you think. customer service should not come second to an individual’s personal opinions on food handling especially if this is you’re chosen profession. Thank you Aaron the waiter for sharing your dislikes in your young life… I am humbled to pack my own $ 17.31 lunch… Thank you Mencius Gourmet Hunan for the high standard of employee customer service education… by the way. when the lid on the sauce fell to the floor the busboy picked it up and put her right back on top of the container sitting on the table… so out of all your serving dishes sitting on the all the tables in the restaurant… one of them is contaminated with dirty carpet hairs… RTN

Rip Off Artists! I was wondering why I had not returned to Mencius in a while and then it hit me. They purposely couch the soup in the menu right along with the other options to choose from that are included in the lunch specials. The only thing is, soup costs an extra $ 1.95 which they tack on to your bill. It’s is their sneaky way of surcharging customers. I suddenly remembered how this happened a few years ago and here they were doing it again. So then I remembered why I hadn’t returned here. Mind you, neither time were they apologetic about the way they imply soup as being an option included in the lunch special. Nor does the staff when asking about the other precluded options stop when they get to the soup to remind you it is an extra charge, so as to complete the guise in the same manner the menu does. It amounts to a deceptive«built — in «surcharge. It was clear that a table of 4 nearby, who though trying to be nice about it, were nonetheless perturbed also.

There’s nothing like a late morning lunch at Mencius on a Friday. My coworkers and I got there around 11:15 and there weren’t many people there. We got our teas and waters and ordered our lunch. I like to try different things so I ordered something I hadn’t tried before. .. the Pork and Shrimp with Cashew. It was very good. Vegetables in it included carrots, celery and onion. Added a little hot oil to spice it up and it was perfect. As always the wait staff was there to refill our glasses and to check that everything with our meal was going fine. That’s always good to see and greatly appreciated. Good job Mencius.

A San Antonio medical center staple, Mencius has consistently provided great Chinese food. Their dishes are Hunan style, which has its own sets of flavors and textures that I believe most people are used to. Their soups taste fresh and their lunch specials in general are great(lemon chicken, sesame chicken, chicken with broc, etc). They also have some great dinner dishes. A favorite of mine is their green beans. It is definitely a place that once you get to know the staff they build a family friendly relationship. Most of their short comings have to do with their successes, mainly a long lunch wait, lunch waiters tend to rush. But that can be said of most Successful Chinese restaurants, Golden Wok being another example. Dinners are much more relaxed. If you want a happy medium I would suggest their early bird specials. Highly recommended!

A bit pricy but the food is good. They have a fresh sushi bar. The combination rice was on point. it’s a really small place so don’t go during the rush hours or you will be waiting 20 mins to sit

One of my favorite Chinese restaurants! I can honestly say it is one of the best in San Antonio. The best time to go is at lunch time. Tea is included with your meal! I recommend the chicken & fruit sauce or beef and veggies in garlic sauce. The food is savory and so yummy! Parking can be tough during the lunch hour but I find if you get there around early or later(if possible) it works out best. The manager always makes sure everyone is taken care of and I have never really had any bad experiences! Very good customer service! I definitely recommend!

Great food and good atmosphere. The Mencius Roll is my go to but the 31 Special Roll is a good plan B. Best part is if you’re not feeling Sushi. A full menu is available for every tastebud.

We’ve been looking for good Chinese/Asian delivery food in the medical center for some time and now I think we have found our Go To place! We ordered delivery and they did let us know that the driver didn’t come in until 5pm but that’s okay. Also $ 15 minimum for delivery, as well as a $ 3.50 delivery fee. The spicy orange chicken wings were delicious! Egg rolls were as expected. Hunan chicken and pepper steak were great. All in all we will be ordering from them again.

Mencius’s is a new addition to my top favorite Chinese restaurants in San Antonio along with Formosa Garden and Hung Fong, edging out Golden Wok and Lung Fung. The food and service were spectacular. The waitress kept my water glass full. They even serve brown rice as an alternative to steamed rice and fried rice. And the best part is that Menciu’s is reasonably priced compared to Golden Wok and that awfully overpriced and overrated Hsiu Yu on Broadway.

Sunday lunch, admittedly late, but they say they are open until after dinner. .. If Walked in, said«hello!» to the clutch of black-clad and apparently bored employees clustered around the hostess station. Nobody spoke, though they were talking among themselves. When their conversation finished, the woman at the hostess station looked up, said«how many» in a flat tone. Another employee picked up two lunch menus and walked into the restaurant, and the woman at the hostess station gestured with her pointer finger, indicating(we guessed) that we should follow. I’m not quite sure why we didn’t just walk out. .. but given what came later, I’m just as glad we did not. Our waiter(whose name, alas, I didn’t get) was delightful — very low key, knowledgeable, friendly. He basically«made» our visit. And now for the. .. lunch! Started with soup — Spouse had egg drop, about which he is sort of an expert having eaten it in numerous countries and all over the US. He said it deserved a C+ — reasonable flavor, but very thin and salty. I chose hot and sour, which was both hot and sour as well as excellent — if I were grading, it would get an A. My lunch was the spicy herb salmon — a good-sized piece of salmon with spicy sauce served with steamed rice(fried rice was an option). Came with an egg roll that was very good, not overly filled and not at all greasy. Their duck sauce, however, was essentially flavorless and sweeter than jam, very strange. Spouse chose pork with garlic sauce which had nicely cut pieces of pork served with a spicy sauce which had what may have been a whole bud of garlic served in whole cloves. Dish would have been better served by the garlic being slivered. .. too much of a good thing is not necessary wonderful. After drinking buckets of excellent iced tea, we paid the bill($ 18 before tip — pretty good!) and left. The crew of employees at the hostess station was sitting on chairs, leaning on counters, looking generally bored beyond belief. Nobody spoke, but one did move her feet so I could get by. Maybe the manager was out sick that day, or on vacation, or something. .. but all we know is what we see on this one visit. So. .. overall, the place gets a 3, which is two more stars than the crew at the welcome station would have earned.

Typical Chinese fare, pretty much the same offerings as most Chinese restaurants. They did have a few Thai items and they had a sushi bar. I would say the sushi bar would does help this place stand out. The place was lit with indoor light, no outdoor light. A bit crowded with tables and people. The waiter was friendly and courteous. The lunch specials were filling, but do not come with soup, that is extra. They do come with egg rolls however. I had the General Tso’s Chicken The pieces of breaded chicken were big and they did not give any of us knives with our silverware. It was driving me a bit crazy, the dish was tasty though.
