On an anniversary vacation to San Antonio, my wife became ill and was taken by ambulance to Nix Medical Center. Things started off badly as even the ambulance, which was given the proper street address from a policeman, got lost and ended up driving the wrong way down a one way street. I don’t know the affiliation of the ambulance but this didn’t start well. Once inside the Emergency Room, we we placed in a curtained area just inside the outside doors. Every time the doors would open, the place would get noisy from the idling diesel of the ambulances and the exhaust fumes would blow inside. The woman in the space next to us was having a severe asthma attack and I’m sure that this didn’t help the situation. The Head Doctor was wonderful as she took the time to explain the situation to my wife and then within 10 minutes, left as her shift was over and things went tragically downhill. We ended up with a doctor who argued with the staff and whom we had trouble understanding. Meds were administered and blood drawn and my wife seemed to be getting slowly stable. Until the Nurse Practitioner showed up. She seemed«medicated» herself and said some things to my wife that really upset her which of course, started my wife’s heart beating irregularly once again. After a few hours, my wife was sent to the ICU. The nurses there seemed very friendly and again my wife calmed down. She was given food about 9:20pm and I went back to my hotel room for the night after being told that I could not stay with her. The next day, things seemed to have calmed down but she wasn’t given a meal until 2pm, thirteen hours after her first and even though her blood pressure was slowly rising, still no meds were given until about the same time. As her pressure rose and the headache you get from not eating ramped up, we told the nurse that my wife was going into a migraine and that we were going to need some of her medication to stop it. One and half hours later, the medication arrived but my then it was too late and she was violently ill, in extreme pain and vomiting.(The nurse had requested it but the pharmacy wasn’t delivering.) My wife was then moved to another room outside of ICU and the vomiting lasted about FOURHOURS while the nurse kept asking the doctor for morphine to stop the migraine. I finally asked to speak to the doctor INPERSON and while he never showed up, the medication was finally approved, I’m typing here in the dark, finally with a sleeping wife. The night nurse is wonderful and whomever the doctor is that is «on-call» is much more responsive than the day staff. I was in tears earlier at the amount of pain that my wife had to endure at this place. I’m not sure what other hospitals are in the immediate area but I’d doubt that I’d recommend this one to anyone. Addendum: I was made aware of this information later, thus my secondary post. When my wife was released, the nurse told me that I should go retrieve the car from the hotel so that I would be there, waiting for her when she was able to walk out. What I didn’t find out was that my wife was not just escorted to the lobby, she was escorted to the cashier where she was sat in the chair where the financial individual harassed her about payment. My wife had just been throwing up for 12 hours, was alone and then this happens to her? She spent 20 minutes while they harassed her about paying them something even though *I* had her purse and wallet. And then the kicker… She was showed to the elevator and told to go to one and the lobby to find me. They can escort her to the cashier but wouldn’t take the time to walk her out to me. If I could give e negative rating to this hospital, it wouldn’t be enough. If I knew this had happened while we were still there, someone might be losing some teeth!

Convenient to downtown and Alamo Heights this location provides a 5min walk from my office and a 8min drive from my home. It is a beautiful old building with classic charm. The place could use some serious updating and refurbishing. I have two doctors that I visit and they both have nice offices in this building. The building could use faster elevators for sure. This building gets the job done but could use some TLC.
