Taco Haven

I had WONDERFUL service here which would keep me coming back on its own — our waitress was attentive, sincere and friendly. She even told us about her parents and her personal quest of self-​discovery since her mother’s sad passing last year, and we discussed the lack of good Mexican food in London. As for the food, we had ample portions, and my companion even took back about half of her extra Taco Haven Special to eat for lunch the next day. Margaritas were decent but I couldn’t help but wish they had a more differentiated drinks menu, though it’s possible I didn’t see it… our table was covered in Valentine’s decorations, all pink hearts and red balloons. Will try it again soon as it’s right around the corner from us in Lavaca. Their breakfast tacos are yummy — available from the to-​go window facing South Presa. They have live music on Fridays/​Saturdays from about 8pm… which is on the loud side, so it’s great for larger groups of lively diners, or families. Hopefully their construction will be finished in the next couple of months — it looks like they are significantly expanding /​updating.

Place had live music (good music by the way), prompt and efficient wait staff (I hardly waited, and when I asked a question that increased my needed time to order my server had no qualms. When I knew my desired request I didn’t wait long for my waitress was ready. Even after ordering my meal was out with post haste and I indulged myself in oh so delicious food!

I don’t know why I went back to this place after the first time. Today was the third time I’ve been there and this was the third time I’ve been disappointed. I had the carne asada tacos. They didn’t cut the meat up at all and when I asked for cilantro, onion, and lime they told me they only had cilantro. I’m supposed to believe they don’t have onion and lime at a Tex-​Mex restaurant. Come on Lady! I have learned my lesson.

Food is always good, service is choppy, 1 time it could be great the next a little less then ok, but like I said the food is aways on point. The hostess Rocks too.

Tacos … Tres Tacos … Tres Tacos de Lengua por favor.
A couple San Antonio locals recommended Taco Haven for a trio of tongue tacos and that was all I needed to make a side trip to try all three styles of Lengua Tacos. At three stars each, Taco Haven was no heaven for beef tongue tacos.
* Lengua Asada Taco
A thick, but tender piece of marinated meat and a Tortilla. That was it.
* Lengua Guisada Taco
Lengua Stew poured into a Tortilla. Was messy, but tasty.
* Lengua Lampreada Taco
Fried tongue in an Egg Batter was interesting, but not really good.
All three tacos would of been better just eating the tongue by itself or as part of a combo plate.
The most depressing part of Taco Haven wasn’t the lengua. It was some weird service. I ordered a beer (Victoria). It came. Ordered a second, it didn’t. About 30-​minutes later, the waitress asked if I’d like to have the 2^nd one taken off the bill. Ya, I think I do since, umm, we didn’t get it and I’m leaving.

Went back today for the first time in years and the first time for lunch. I had the enchiladas verde con pollo and REALLY, REALLY like it.
My lunch date had the nachos — I didn’t try any of them, but each single chip looked like it got the chef’s full attention. Each one was loaded with refried beans, cheese etc. They looked so heavy I couldn’t believe she could pick each one up with one hand! I really love this place!

Best breakfast tacos in town. Breakfast tacos specials everyday. The menudo is better and cleaner than many restaurants. The food is excellent the service is great, you are made to feel welcomed. This an excellent place.

I dined here for the first time yesterday… I will never come back. Alot of my family and friends said this place was a great place to eat. I sat at a high top table next to the fountain drinks, and while I was enjoying my food several roaches crawled out of the wall and were crawling next to my table and the fountain drink station. I was very disgusted to say the least. The manager apologized and didn’t charge me for the food, which I would not have paid anyway. I reported this to the public health inspector, I felt sick after just knowing food was in my stomach that roaches could have possibly touched.

Only been here a few times, and each time was for the tortilla soup, which is the best I have had in San Antonio, full of all the good stuff seasoned just right. If you like tortilla soup, this is the place to go. Their chips and salsa are a 6.5 on the 1 – 10 scale. The tea is always fresh and delicious. The wait staff is usually very friendly and attentive. I had an experience or lack thereof with a waitress that was just in a bad mood and ignored (forgot?) about our drink order, but that’s life I can’t judge her or blame the restaurant. I politely went and found another waitress and she took great care of us, we tipped her well and all was good. If you get dealt a terrible waiter/​tress just be polite and find another one, if you are nice and polite, you’ll get good service, don’t sit there and fume over it and then resort to bashing an establishment because an employee had an off day, we’ve all had them, move on. We’re all human… There’s also a bike rack out front to lock your bike up. All in all this place is pretty great, go get some tortilla soup!

STAY AWAY from this place! Placed a pick up order that they told me would take 10 minutes. It ended up taking AN HOUR to get my food and the order was INCORRECT. Manager gave me a heartless apology and still made me pay. Worst service of any restaurant in Southtown. We also found large CHICKEN BONES in our tacos. What a joke!
***Jerry, please don’t waste your time and reply with your usual condescending remarks that are completely inappropriate. I think my 13 month old baby would run a business with more competence and professionalism!

I can sum it up in one word: Meh.
But allow me to elaborate-​what happened to land Taco Haven on the list of «Eek! Methinks not. I’ve experienced better» well to be honest, they did. I have made it my personal mission to be the Ash Ketchum of breakfast tacos-​I wanna eat the very best, like no one ever has. If there was a breakfast taco league I would wanna be at that table. That being said, having been to Taco Haven a few times, it never comes to mind when the question of «It’s Sunday morning, where are we going for breakfast tacos» is proposed, and I’ve never understood why, that is-​until my last trip.
The tacos are just dry and flavorless. We did a variety of tacos last go around and nothing stood out, nothing made me go YES! Bland fillings (especially the unseasoned potatoes), dry tortillas that not even the minimum amount of salsa they provided could salvage. I’m a huge fan of nopalitos and theirs were underwhelming at best.
The price is waaaaay higher than it should be for these substandard tacos (and there is an upcharge for to-​go tacos). Sorry but I’ll not make the mistake of grabbing breakfast tacos from here next time, I’ll stick to the other local businesses that are much higher on my list.
PS: Taco Haven was featured on KSAT 12’s list of Top 5 Worst Restaurant Health Inspection Scores of 2015 so keep that in mind when making your dining choices. (I found this out after I had frequented this business).

Came here on a Thursday night for dinner. Friendly staff. The food was bland and nothing special. They were pretty slow (as in not a lot of people eating there) and therefore one of the servers deemed it necessary to not just wipe down nearby tables but literally give the legs of all the chairs a good scrub down. Really? This is something you do when you don’t have guests around. Very tacky and rude to do with people eating dinner right next to you!
Nothing impressed me about this place.

Went for the music and people watch. Had shots of tequila but the third one did not taste like 1800. Had to remind the waitress. Some nice people even sent me a shot. Music was enjoyable. Seemed like everyone had a good time. I had like four or five shots of Tequila and the bill was surprisingly pleasant. Don’t worry taxi cabs are the way to on a night like this!

First off sir I worked down the street from your establishment with I placed this order months ago and it was the same day I went is the same day I made the post. I had a huge order cause not only was I getting food for my self as well as my coworkers that didn’t even get to eat. I had maybe about 5 – 6 tacos as well as a taco salad with just meat and cheese nothing difficult very simple. But my order missing like 3 tacos and that’s was strike one and then I get my taco salad and it was not the way I ordered that was strike 2 then I get to the restaurant and you cashier tells me I had to bring the entire order books that was the straw that broke the camals back. He should have told me on the phone to bring the order back not when I get there. That’s what made me cause a scene. There was no customer service there and I work for Apple where i have a high customer service satisfaction rate. It not my fault that your mistakes made me not want to be a customer there any more. I ate their once before and had an amazing waitress and tipped her very nicely but after this last experience never again. Unilocal is supposed to be warning future customers of what kinda experience your establishment gives. I was being honest and these are not lies these are facts.

This place has really gone down hill. They sat us next to a crying baby that belonged to someone that worked there. The food took a while and was over cooked. The cheese tastes old and it seems the pride in what they used to do isn’t there anymore. Not sure if I will go back for breakfast or lunch again.
At night there is live music. The scene at night is great if you want to listen to music and enjoy some drinks.

This place is great! Have never had to wait long for an open table. The food is tasty and the staff is always friendly and helpful. Each time I’ve visited it is always good. I leave with my belly full and my pocket doesn’t feel any lighter haha This little corner restaurant is near King William and well worth the visit. Never disappointed after popping in! I’m a fan and will keep going back

Wow, after reading some recent reviews, I had to double check to make sure I was reviewing the right place!
We visited here on a Friday morning. It wasn’t exactly bustling, but there were a few others eating breakfast. We sat and were immediately greeted by a very friendly waitress. The food was great, it was Mexican breakfast food… I ordered migas, boyfriend ordered the Pancho Villa plate (I think), and the 9 year-​old ordered the bean and cheese tacos. Everyone was very full and happy when we left!

Food is decent. The waitress gave me a check for $ 28+, and she ran my card for $ 35+, and she tore the bottom off of the original itemized bill. She added exactly 18% of the total to the bill without telling us, leaving the tip amount blank for us to fill in the merchant and customer copy.
We spoke with the manager, and he bowed out and let us talk to the waitress who told us it was a mix up. A mix up that was exactly 18% higher to the cent on our bill. Jokes on her bc I was gonna leave 20−25% anyway.
They must serve a lot of seafood bc this place sure smells fishy. Also it’s total BS to charge for chips and salsa. Was looking forward to this place, but left disappointed after that.

I would give Taco Haven five stars if the chips and salsa were included. In San Antonio, the land of a million Mexican restaurants… you have to have chips and salsa. Or fresh-​made tortillas and salsa if you want to keep up with the impressive spots, really.
Otherwise… Fantastic service, solid drinks, great food. Family-​run and I love the family history of places like this… you can tell the people working there take pride in their business and consider their customers family. We’ll definitely be returning.

First. Our waitress was the biggest setback. The food is middle of the road. Look folks we are in the heart of Tex mex. Bring your A Game. When you charge for chips and salsa (2.25) and bring a bowl with ten chips in it be prepared for the scrutiny.
This place isn’t cheap, for lunch we spent $ 25 before a tip. Two normal entrees two drinks and a small guacamole.
Expensive for my adopted home town. You can throw a rock and hit a Mexican restaurant better than this.
I’m giving it two stars due to the competition that overshadows it, the price, and most of all the service.
Now I did see other plates that looked more enticing.
I included a photo of my $ 8 plate that had two lukewarm cheese enchiladas and a ground beef taco.
This is $ 5 plate at many places and it will be served smoking hot. Not warm.
The Guacamole was the standout.

Took my 82 year old mother for lunch. It had been awhile since my last visit so when i drove up to park in the back it was closed so we had park across the street. Today’s Sunday and I thought there would be a lunch rush but to my surprise it was somewhat slow. We were seated right away. It took a few minutes to get our drink order. The waitress took our Order of an enchilada plate, tripa taco and a gringo taco, and chips and salsa. We waiting about 15 to 30mins for our food and we had to cancel or chip and salsa order since it took just as long time for them to be made. The food was good and the service was good. But the high light of my visit was seeing two waiters dance and taking a video /​selfies while preparing there drink orders. Yup that happened. Will I be back maybe if there’s better parking and If the chips are ready.
