This is our«go to» local sushi spot. Their fish is so fresh and the quality is always consistent. We eat in most of the time but the take out is quick and easy too. The owners are wonderful and the service is great. Just writing this I need a fix!

This place is ok but you can do better in San Mateo. The service is fine but a bit confused. The rolls pretty small so you have to order more. The fish is good/fresh. I thought the quality was the best part here. There’s also no sushi bar here which is strange for a sushi place.

Small, modest eatery with above average Japanese fare. Ordered a soft shell crab, combi set(shrimp tempura and beef teriyaki) which came with salad and miso soup and a lovers sushi roll. The servers are Japanese, which helped to increase the food credibility. The miso soup came first and boy, it taste good! The soft shell crabs didn’t quite look the way we usually expect them to look, the presentation was also not very appealing. This is one of those times that we remind ourselves to not judge a book by its cover! Really good soft shell crabs! Super yummy The main dish was fairly ok, the salad and cucumber that came as sides were awesome. Read a couple of reviews on their sushi rolls, so we had to order one too. Lovers roll main highlight is the seared salmon, the slightly burnt taste is so refreshing and good. They either had cheese/mayo which kinda overpowered the taste a little. There are quite a number of street parking along the stretch where it’s located. Fairly easy to get a lot. Overall, above average place to visit to satisfy your jap cravings

I’ve only ever had sushi here but I have to say if I could only eat one thing for the rest of my life it might be the Uni special here(also called Uni Spoons in my house). It’s that good. Caveat: I love Uni. I can’t speak to the noodles or other menu items but I think if you get miso soup, soft shell crab appetizer and some rolls you can’t go wrong here. And Uni of course!

The food quality was excellent and came out fairly quickly. The service… what service? A table that was seated after us was helped before us. My soup was served without a spoon. I had to get up and get it myself. We tried the miso soup, which was what you would expect and we had one of their sushi platters and ramen. The ramen noodles tasted a little old not especially chewy, but it was the end of the day so maybe they were from earlier in the day. I would try this place again.

We are regulars here. My kids love the food and I like the fast friendly service. We take out all the time and the food is usually ready in 15 – 20 minutes. A great addition to Laurel Street!

Delicious and service was quick. I got the salmon and I wish they have more bento options but overall I was pretty pleased. I enjoyed their tuna sushi as well and love the miso soup. Overall, will come back.

Nothing says bad more than fake miso soup. How insulting that you serve chicken broth instead of miso soup, barely any flavor, taking us for ignorant fools who won’t notice. Save your money, your time, and more importantly the calories for a real experience. The sever recommended their sesame chicken for my kids to eat, well it is so deep fried and breaded that the whole thing probably had less than 1 ounce of chicken meat. I am convinced they’ve got their relative writing Unilocal reviews.

This is a great sushi restaurant away from the busy part of Laurel Street. They offer wonderful service and consistently great sushi. Ryu seems fairly priced and consistently has great quality. They remember repeat customers and always greet them with a warm welcome. I love this place for dine in and take out.

We’ve been so happy ever since Ryu Sushi Bistro opened in town! I’ve gone many many times over the past year and a half. Service is friendly and efficient. On busy nights, at a certain point they won’t accept take out orders because the kitchen is too busy with the in-house guests. I like that they want to keep things manageable and not overwhelm the kitchen.(And they’re not thinking just about making more money.) Small eats — love the agedashi tofu, poke salad, miso sea bass. The chicken Kara-age was so-so the one time I tried it. Miso soup and green salad appetizers are good. — chicken mushroom udon — the broth is so flavorful and the udon is fresh. I’m not a big noodle soup person, but I am a big fan of this dish!(So are the kids) — the donburi(rice bowls) have gotten better over time — usually get pork katsu. — great rolls — kids love rock ‘n roll; Lion King is unique and flavorful; dragon roll is always yummy; yam tempura roll was tasty(if you are looking for a vegetarian option). Food is consistently good here. I have brought a LOT of family and friends here, and everyone has left happy and full! I’m sad when they close while on vacation. But they deserve the break! Nice people — we’re happy to support this local business!

Really friendly staff, small little place on the south side of Laurel(my fave side). Sashimi was not the finest quality but will do in a pinch.

I have eaten here 2 times now. First was was when the first opened, and second time was about a month ago. I don’t have complaints with service, so we can skip that part. Food: ehhhhh… Definitely not the best sushi I have ever had. I’m a picky sushi eater for sure. Fish wasn’t that fresh, rolls were kind of small. The first time I ate here I got udon and I actually hated it. I rarely say that about anything but the broth was flavorless besides the massive amount of salt… Tasted like salt water and it was just broth and noodles. Some veggies would have spiced it up a bit! Prices aren’t bad, and it’s walking distance from where I live soooo it’s easy. I would give it another try.

Legit! I came here for the first time a week or so ago and ordered takeout for a coworker and myself. We ordered the spicy sashimi salad, the Giants roll, and rhe red/white dragon roll. All I can say is daaaaang! We ordered ahead and the order was ready in 15 minutes. When I arrived there, parking was fairly easy and the place is easy to find. I walked inside, and there were only 4 or 5 customers inside, so I was able to get in and out of there within a super quick minute or two. Staff was friendly and the place was squeaky clean. Anyway, onto the food: The spicy sashimi salad has a sweet and spicy dressing, and they don’t skimp on the sashimi. The Giants roll had a good variety of textures, from crunchy to creamy to chewy, it was the perfect complement to the leafy, light sashimi salad. The red & white dragon roll was pretty standard. Very tasty, but to be honest, didn’t feel like this was as good a deal as the other items we ordered. I will absolutely be back(actually, we’ve been back twice already).

Pretty good. I came here alone last week for my Sake and Sushi fix. As I typically do I ordered the Chirashi. The fish was very fresh but there were a couple of «odd» cuts where the fish’s tendon or ligature was off putting to the texture. No biggy, this is something that’s usually the case at any Sushi joint short of fine dining. Overall good food, good service and I’d eat here again.

I visit Ryu often with my parents and I love everything I’ve tried here. Many of my coworkers(we’re really nearby) also visit frequently. Their uni is the best I’ve ever had, by a longshot. I also really love their katsudon. Super tasty. Their bento boxes also have a nice variety of items(pickles are delicious) and are lively and fresh. They are family run and very sweet people too. I wish them a lot of success in this location that always seems to have unsuccessful restaurants — they seem to always be busy and their organizational skills definitely seem up to the task so I believe in them!

Got spicy tuna maki, unagi, crunchy king, hamachi maki and black cod. One star for unagi. Everything else was fishy and disgusting. Don’t spend $ 10 on the black cod. It’s just sweet and again fishy.

A good and strong 4. The owners have transformed a location with perennially unsuccessful and not-well-run restaurants and have created a seeming winner. While I’m not sure I’d eat at the location, they’ve created an ambience that is soothing. More importantly, the sushi and rolls are very fresh and very good. We are definitely putting this on our regular circuit.

1st time there, however I got Take-out(After my visit at AvantGard Spa) Hot a few hand roll’s & their sashimi salad. Everything was fresh. Gotta say, out of all the sushi places in S. Carlos, I like this one the best. I base everything on the spicy tuna rolls & man, there was really good. Tiny place with a lot of heart is how I would sum Ryu sushi!

This restaurant is small, but it’s worth the wait should it happen to have one. :) The servers are friendly and attentive, and the sushi is fresh! I can definitely taste the difference between good sushi and mediocre sushi now. I usually order the rainbow roll when I go out for sushi, but this place sticks out to me because of the freshness and quality of the raw fish. The giants roll is another great pick! Their rolls aren’t cheap but the quality is good so you’ll be paying for quality. The portion sizes are decent so I didn’t mind. Plus they throw in free miso soup at the beginning of your meal, and who doesn’t love soup? Or who doesn’t love free? There’s also outdoor patio seating but the inside of the restaurant is small, probably only about 10 small tables inside.
