Balboa Nursing and Rehabilitation Center

This is the worst possible facility. We put my 80 year old father here who suffers from Lewy Body Dimentia. We had read some of the good reviews and the staff seemed friendly and attentive upon admission. Within a few days my dads condition worsened dramatically. My mom would be in and out from business and was not there for many meals only to walk in to find him hunched over a tray of food trying to feed himself with a pen, when this was brought to the staffs attention it seemed disregarded. In the week he was there he lost 7 pounds. On Thursday night due to his dimentia he tried to get out of bed to leave and instead of handling the situation with care they charged at him causing a fall. No call was made to family till morning and no x rays done till that following day. When my mom found out about fall and showed up they had taken him to physical therapy (AFTER A FALL) with no record of this on therapist chart. That night he was admitted to ER for being combative. Only for us to find out he has a lumbar fracture total bruising of his whole backside and buttocks, and worst of all bleeding in the brain. He was severely dehydrated as well, in fact his urine was almost black. This place is a horrible facility. They can dress it up all they want with new floors etc but if your a patient with any memory care or dimentia issues and cant advocate or help yourself you will suffer here.

The nurses don’t really do much they go I’ll grab a CNA… So That’s annoying … It doesn’t smell like other places which is good. It’s just heartbreaking leaving my gram here. It’s one of the better nursing homes I’ve visited. They listen to us and her

Came here to visit a friend of mine who was staying here so I can only comment from a visitor’s point of view. I thought the place was nice, modern (looked like the rooms were furnished out of Pottery Barn vs. really old stuff). The staff was friendly and attentive when we needed something from them. The place didn’t smell too much like an old person’s home and they were always cleaning the wooden floors and rooms it seemed. The staff there work damn hard so next time you’re in there, say thank you to them.

Thank you to the diligent staff that make this a top-​notch center. Balboa provides care the way it should be delivered.

I left Balboa yesterday after a very successful stay. The therapists really concentrated on my medical issues and worked hard to make them better. The ENTIRE staff beginning with Josh the administrator to Martha who kept my room tidy were always so pleasant and helpful. No one was ever without a cheery smile and requests were handled promptly. The professial staff, the PT’s and OT’s, nursing staff and aids (Crystal, Maryvic, Rosille, Jill, Concord, Cecile, Sonia, Joy, Jennifer, Sam. Lisette, Joanne, Roxanne, Lyn,) and many, many more, were diligent and also extremely friendly. I’d like to list the names of all those who assisted in my care but there isn’t enough space to thank each and every one individually and my memory is just not that good. Just let it be said that I ever needed a rehabilitation facility again, I would gladly choose Balboa.

Our Mother was cared for by this facility for over 6 years, she received the best care, wonderful staff, hard working. Open lines of communication. She just passed away last month and this is part of what was read at her memorial services — «Even though people around us say how sad to be living in a nursing home all those years, she was happy, smiling… and she was a part of our daily lives and we saw how she toughed the lives of others while at Balboa. They loved her, cared for her, they actually made us one big family. We saw this especially during her last week, we saw the staff come and go at different times to say goodby to Mom and tell us of their own personal stories with her.». my mother was moved here after hospitalization. she still needed transport to dr’s appointments that needed to be scheduled by staff. they forgot to schedule transpot for one appt. which resulted in a one week delay in treatment for cancer. they’ve also lost her clothing on two occasions and nursing staff is dismissive to family. we’ve decided to move her to new facility and would never recommend this place.

My dad is at Balboa right now and if this is not as good as it gets, it’s WAY better than any of the three other places he’s been! The building is nice and clean and the nurses (which I think are the BIGGEST factor) are wonderful. My dad has never liked the nurses at any rehab place he’s been to and he has only great things to say about the nurses at Balboa. He says they look like dolls. And they do! But they are so nice to him, and that is the most important thing. When he calls for them they always come quickly and bring a smile with them. They joke with him and are just plain good natured. It does my heart so good to know that they are taking care of him as if he was family. The only thing that I think needs work is the food. It’s standard hospital fare, and my mom and dad are very good cooks so hospital food isn’t putting any weight on him and he could use some weight! I didn’t dink them the star though because food can be fixed but surly, ticked off nurses who consider the patients a pain in their rear and can’t wait to get off work can’t.

I am very proud from the nursing to the Rehab staff. I would stay there if I needed to. The secret is to request them, because certain case managers will put you in a place to whoever pays them the most.
Balboa has the highest nursing rations, the nicest place, and are very honest and ethical and works very closely with Sharp, who also is a first class operation. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed.

My mother had been admitted for having a mini stroke. the first night there she was denied medication prescribed to her until the resident doctor was able to come by the next morning and see that she was feeling paralysis, and 200+ sys blood pressure.
about three days later she had a stoke while under their care, again waiting for the resident doctor to come by instead of seeing the severity of the symptoms and taking her to Scripps Mercy ER (which is down the block!)
there was multiple complaints made by my mother about the carelessness of their nurses, the seemingly «whenever i feel like it» nature of giving medication (including insulin shots not arriving even within the same hour as the food.) and a few times they even gave her the WRONG medication!
speaking of the food, diabetic options of food means; the same salty/​sugary food everyone else is getting. I ended up bringing her food myself everyday.
now that the bills are rolling in for this nightmare factory, the rude and down-​right harassing nature of their billing department is in full swing. you’d think a woman having had 3 strokes would not get badgered for asking about her bill by an employee who obviously hates their job.
it’s apparent that there is no care within those walls. it is just an institution to farm money out of those too poor or sick to make them stop. and if they live through the ordeal is irrelevant.

Crowded three to a room with three TV’s blasting. Staff would not accomodate my mom who hates TV. Outrageous co-​pay of $ 1,170 for a few days. Kept injecting insulin four times a day. (not before or after) Maybe they need to fabricate medical needs? But why pancakes and syrup to eat for diabetic? Many staff with foreign accent can’t understand by old people. Power went out last day I got her out.
