Good bye and farewell to this great bakery. According to the OB Rag blogsite, «OB Around town 6−11−14,“Stephanie’s Has Closed.» «The organic bakery on Voltaire, Stephanie’s, has closed and has been emptied out. By appearances, no one is currently moving in. We were told that Maria, the owner, had to leave to take care of her mother in the Bay Area.» This was a fantastic place and will be sorely missed.

I am soo bummed this place is closed. This has been my go to spot for the absolute best vegan baked goods on the planet. Everything organic and vegan and recipes that make you want to eat an entire cake by yourself.

this place is closed. I just walked by and there is paper on the door and windows, so I don’t recommend going there.

Ordered my daughter a Passion Vanilla cake for her birthday; it was true passion! Not too sweet & filled with a layer of bananas and strawberry preserves — frosting was YUM! & cake was moist — melt in your mouth. They are a little on the pricy side so be ready to fork out a few bucks; starts at $ 38 for an 8″; worth it in my opinion; I would def order from Stephanie’s again

Came across Stephanie’s Bakery quite by accident. As a vegan, great tasting bakery treats are next to impossible to find… until now. My girlfriend and I shared a piece of German chocolate cake(actually I eat most of it) and found it to be absolutely delicious! We highly recommend this place and will most assuredly be back in the future.

If this review were for solely the cheesecake(the only thing my friend and I ordered), it would be 5 stars! But it’s true that everything is kind of expensive, the atmosphere is a little dim and they don’t have a TON of different things on hand at any given time. That said, it is important to note that you go to this place knowing that it’s all vegan and they buy super top-quality stuff, so you’re expecting to pay $ 6 for a slice of cheesecake, and it’s all fresh, so of course they’re not going to have a million things just sitting out. If you go into the experience knowing this, you’re going to come out happy. I’m pretty sure that they also add crack or something, because I think that was the best cheesecake I’ve ever eaten PERIOD, vegan or no vegan(I am not vegan, I just like food). My friend got a chocolate cheesecake of some kind, and mine was pumpkin. UN.BELIEVABLY.DELICIOUS. I’m excited to go back and try the pizza!

I really am supportive of local small businesses but I have been here a few times and just highly disappointed. Sometimes the selection is so small, we ended up leaving. I have bought small items from the bakery and it was extremely expensive! I understand healthier ingredients ARE more expensive but when I can go to People’s Co-Op down the street and get twice as much as what I got at Stephanie’s, it’s questionable. There are great reviews and not so great reviews, so it may depend on when you go. I won’t be going back though. Disappointed multiple times. So sorry, just being honest.

Just recently went vegan with my mister. I didn’t want to cook today, so we grabbed pizza here. Had the special«Meat Lovers» vegan pizza. Came with yeast(a substitute parmesan cheese) & chilli flakes. The crust is delicious, I never used to eat crust with regular pizza. The pizza is just delicious as well. It’s a bit more expensive, but it kicks a regular pizza’s ass. nom!

Passion Vanilla Slice of Cake– Stephanie, your vegan cakes are soo tasty. The cake was tasty and had really good texture. The frosting was sweet but not too sweet. Was there a hint of coconut? I wasn’t sure. It was very light, and not over-powering. There were mangoes in between the top and middle layer. There were bananas on the bottom layer. Yes, I finished this cake in 5 minutes. Yes, I was supposed to eat this cake at home and instead ate it in my parked car. No I am not a heffer, and I am offended that you would think that. 4.8 stars. I may begin writing you love letters, Stephanie. …or Cake? Who should I direct my love to? I love you Cake… Passion Vanilla Burger Cake– Passion Vanilla Cake as a Burger Top Chocolate Mouse representing a burger Vanilla Mouse representing mayo Strawberry-tomato, Kiwi-Lettuce, Mango-Cheese Passion Vanilla Cake as Burger Bottom. Concept is super fun. In general tasty. Was fun to eat. Would have preferred no choco mouse. I am adventurous, but it was too many flavors for me. I appreciate new menu options. But, I may opt for other items in the future. 4.3 stars. Lemon Cake– Delicious! Hints of lemon and mango. Would buy again. Moist. Flavorful. Nothing over powering. 4.8 stars. Donut Hole with Raspberry Glaze– Tasty, but not as good as the cakes. I liked the new menu option. Would, opt for other items in the future. 4 stars. Orange-sicle Cupcake(Gluten-free) — Dry. Flavor good. Texture weird. 3 stars

We drove from Chula Vista to get a birthday cake for my son’s birthday party, and everyone loved it. The cake was delicious, and all the kids in the party finished their portion. My family was amazed that it was a gluten and dairy free birthday cake, they were very happy about that. We ordered it over the phone, and payed with our credit card with no problem. They were understanding with our son’s dietary sensibilities, and provided a cake that went well with our«fiesta». We found out about Stephanie’s Bakery from a referral from Extraordinary Deserts in Hillcrest. :-)

AH-MAZING. Honestly had no idea that Vegan pizza could be as delicious as it gets! I had a pepperoni pizza and a vanilla passion cake and it was great. I wish they opened ALL the days but then I’d be seriously overweight… but anyways Vegans need to make this place POPPIN. The food is too good to ignore

I *want* to give this place 5 stars, because I always want to show vegan business some love. But this is just not a 5 star place. On the day we went, the baked goodie selection was very, very small. I’ve walked by many times since, and it seems like there is usually more, but not on this particular day. Also, I keep reading how they are baked fresh daily. I’ve never had a more stale vegan cupcake, so I highly doubt that. My pizza was ok. Not much flavor, but not bad. Hubby’s calzone was almost all crust and very little filling. The water cups were practically a dixie cup size, and getting a refill wasn’t easy since the only person there was baking while we were eating. And last but not least, even though there is a sign that says she accepts mastercard & visa, she wasn’t accepting them that day, but she continually waited to tell people that until after they ordered, and then told them where they could find the closest ATM. Put a sign up, apologize for the inconvenience, and tell people straight away! There’s no excuse for anything else. Luckily, we had cash, but if we hadn’t, I would have been even more irritated to go pay an ATM fee for my just ‘ok’ pizza and stale cupcake. I won’t be going back — not when I can eat at the deli in People’s. I’m sad to say that, because I know it’s hard to stay in vegan business, but this place just doesn’t make the cut.

While I enjoyed plenty of good food on my recent trip to San Diego, the most delicious food and best service bar none was had at Stephanie’s Bakery. My friend and I arrived shortly after lunchtime on Saturday and greeted with a beautiful display case full of perfectly garnished baked goods and the good news that a spinach strudel was about to come out of the oven. Vegan strudel? Twist my arm :) My friend and I each started with a slice of the strudel, which was flaky on the outside and filled with a creamy and well flavored spinach and«cheesy» mixture, not unlike spanakopita. Needless to say, we both cleaned our plates. Next, we split a small pesto pizza that was topped with artichokes and sundried tomatoes. This is among the best pizza I have ever eaten, even in my pre-vegan days. The pesto was probably the best, most authentic pesto I have eaten since going vegan, the artichokes and sundried tomatoes provided the perfect accompaniment. The crust was flavorful, with perfectly twisted edges. *Aside, if anyone from Stephanie’s is reading this, I think you could make stellar garlic knots with that crust* We stocked up on desserts to go, which included hefty slices of a fantastic German chocolate cake(which I am a tough critic of) and a perfectly decadent marble cheesecake, as well as moist and delicious peanut butter cookies and a decent«Tollhouse cookie» bar. The staff was extremely nice and personable too, which is always a huge plus in my book. I wish they had an LA location so I could get a regular fix, but am just going to have to settle to making the trip to San Diego more often! Note that they are only open Friday through Sunday so make sure to stock up on extra desserts… they are definitely worth it!

My favorite bakery in San Diego! Recommendations(Everything is Organic and Vegan!): — Coffee — Iced tea(assorted, I like Rooibos a lot) — Vegan Pizza — Custom Cakes(especially Chocolate, German Chocolate) — Strudels(just be sure to order it hot) Just be sure to pre-order it couple days before if you’re ordering a custom cake for special occasion. They usually decorate with edible flowers and your choice of words. I get my birthday cake from Stephanie’s every year and everybody who’s tried it loves it. It’s delicious!

I am not vegan, much less vegetarian, but it’s nice to support these businesses because their ingredients are fresh, organic, and cruelty-free. I have my fair share of meat lovers’ pizzas, but lately I’ve been opting for more healthier alternatives. My friends came down to SD to hangout, and were looking for various vegan-friendly eateries, so we all carpooled here to catch a quick bite. We settled on the pesto pizza, generously covered in spinach and artichoke hearts. I’m a huge fan of new york style pizzas, and their pizzas are on the thin side in terms of crust. It’s crispy and nicely seasoned. The cheese was hearty and nicely melted. My friends were impressed as well, especially since we all came here with low expectations considering how empty it was inside. We were the only customers that evening, despite being a weekend! Overall, it’s a bit on the pricey side, as a 14″ pizza(8 slices) costs $ 18.99. A slice of pumpkin cheesecake will set you back $ 7. Only a few items have prices on the blackboard, but even that is not an exact indicator in terms of pricing. It’s unfortunate that they can only open for 3 days a week(Friday through Sunday) in order to reduce costs. I would give this place a 3.5, but I’m on the fence of whether I’m fan considering I’m not vegan. Vegans will definitely appreciate what Stephanie’s bakery has to offer, a lot more than I do. I would rather go to Regents Pizzeria in the UTC area for the same price.
