On Friday October 2nd myself and a few coworkers where headed out to the Ocean Coming from Cabrillo Isle marina where my boat is docked. We are second shifters so we got off of work at 11:00PM and where on the boat and underway by about 11:45PM. We had just gotten out of the Cove and into the Channel when I felt a problem with the starboard engine I looked over the side of the boat and saw that there where a bunch of lobster hoops just under the surface with no lights on them.(The San Diego Harbor police can confirm this as the saw the same thing, I don’t think that people are even supposed to put lobster hoops in the channel as there are thousands of boats and ships coming and going all of the time). The first thing I did was call vessel assist on the radio. They looked up my policy and said that I only had $ 300. worth of towing. I told them that was wrong I bought the unlimited towing package through West Marine for $ 158. He told me I did not and said if I wanted a tow then it would cost me at least $ 500. on top of the $ 300. that the insurance would cover. I told him that I did not have $ 500. they said they could not help and that was the end of the conversation. I try to run the motor in reverse to see if I could shake the trap loose from the propeller a few times and I think it just made it worse. The boat has two motors but does not handle properly on one motor. I managed to get the boat over to a nearby fuel dock that was closed at the time. I radioed the Coast Guard for help and they sent the Harbor police out. The harbor police let me borrow some bolt cutters and an underwater flash light. I was a couple hours trying to free dive under the boat to cut the trap away from the propeller. Eventually a vessel assist boat just happened to be in the area and the police officer talked him in to towing us back to my dock. The next day i went to west marine and they looked up my receipts and said yes you did buy unlimited tow package and you should not have to pay anything out of pocket. iam writing this regarding the phony promontion has regarding their policy of the card I purchased. in 20012The company guaranteed in the gold card that if I pay $l85. I would have unlimited coverage. So I broke down off off of monterey, california. The outfit vessel assist came out from santa cruz and towed me to halfmoon bay. Each of the companies I learn later are separate enities. The santa cruz office was very good. Yet, when I got to halfmoon bay I was abandoned. They would only tow me if I gave a 2,200 check to tow onto san francisco. The gold car is really a fallacy. I beleive it is not true as it was originally sold to me. This was sold on false and misleading information. They never said in the first interview for the card anything about its limitations. One thing for sure get what they promise in writing… John
