Went here with my roommates and some out of town friends. Never been here before. The two reasons why we decided to go, dubstep and alcohol. It was pretty small, lame crowd. Music was OK, there were like two or more DJ’s and they seemed to have two totally different styles of music so it was kind of weird when it was switched up. Would have been nice if it was more consistent. The pizza across the street was really amazing but maybe that was just because I was shwasted.

Seductive. Intriguing. Modern. Gritty. Unpretentious. Confident. It’s how I like my city(love you SF), and it’s how I like my bars(love you Añu). After a few years finally had a reason to return the other night, which meant good drinks, good music, good space and a good chance to give some Unilocal love. One of my favorite bars in the city.

My friend and I went to see Caspa and Flying Lotus at the Mezzanine last month and received a flier about Añu. My girlfriend and I thought we could fill our night with the 3 D’s: drinks, dubstep, and dancing. It was a Wednesday night so I didn’t have high expectations about the place, actually, correct me, I didn’t have ANY expectations. Still, I was completely disappointed. Location: Horrible. 6th street and market is filled with crazies gawking at you. When my friend told me «the bar is here», I was like«you’ve got be kidding me.» I’ll admit, that’s the first time I’ve walked down 6th street in the middle of the night. Crowd: It was basically my friend and I and a group of grungy guys and girls in dreadlocks. Sorry, not my scene. Music: Great music. I would have done some dancing, if 1.) I was more drunk, 2.) there was better crowd. I might considering coming here on a weekend.

My first experience here was a few years back. I was probably f*%ked up, but I still remember I had a blast. The music playing was progressive house and the dance floor was packed. Although it doesn’t take much to fill the dance floor since it is so small. Since then I’ve been back a few times and I am very impressed with the selection of EDM(electronic dance music). Where else can you consistently go listen to dub step, minimal and all around banging progressive. Things to keep in mind, parking is a bitch but there is a lot in the alley which I recommend also its very small and can be super crowded at times.

Why have I not known about«ritual dubstep» till now? Regardless — had an incredible night last night — hip-rolling to on-point Dupstep DJs in intimate Añu. The crowd was low-key and mellow. The vibe was even. The best part — no cover. I used to spend my Thursdays at Club Six bouncing to reggae. Now I know where I’ll be taken my antsy dancing self each Thursday. I suggest you do the same. Sexy music. Plenty of room to move. Jugs of water. And the oh so familiar 6th street. Always alive. Always rowdy. And always there to welcome in the weekend right — with a tad of drama. Trust.

Came here on a Wednesday night after hitting up Mr. Smith’s which is like 3 blocks away. My friend read about this in some nightlife book. I was expecting it to be rockin but it sucked. No cover charge which was cool. I would have been pissed off if I had to pay to get in here. The dance floor was small and barely anyone was dancing. A couple people dancing by themselves. Lame. We were able to find seats which was the only good thing about this place. We left after spending half an hour here. Good if you like house music.

Ok, I’ll admit it: I mostly came here out of curiosity to see what type of bar could survive at 6th& Market. The answer? One that’s basic yet polished; trendy yet divey… cheap but expensive. Or as Megan W so aptly put it: «you want me to pay what for a drink on 6th and Market?» Then again, there *are* a lot of reasons to stop in; you could be on your way to a show at Mezzanine or the Golden Gate Theater, or you could just be conspiring with the SFBC folks on their diabolical scheme to hold up Muni, terrorize helpless SUV drivers, and generally tear apart the fabric of American society one bike rack at a time. And while you’re pondering the fair market price of a gin and tonic in these parts, you can try to identify those awesome abstractualized city maps on the wall. I could pick out San Francisco, of course, and Detroit, but what’s the one with the river running NW-SE through it? It bugged me so much I asked the bartender. His typically San Franciscan response? «We’re having an opening for them tomorrow; you can ask the artist himself».

Been here a couple of times and it’s a good bar. I usually tend to go out around 11ish and surprisingly every time I’ve been at this bar it isn’t ridiculously packed as I would expect it to be on a Saturday(not complaining because I love bars that are not tooooo crowded). They do have a mini mini dance floor towards the back where the DJ’s play but there is usually room to get your groove on. Overall if you are in the neighborhood — Check this place out! Its a good place to take a date!

Why are they asking ten dollars to get in? It’s just a dumpy dive bar with a DJ. I only paid six dollars because someone in my group worked out a discount but I still feel ripped off. Vertigo and Double Dutch have you beaten in every way and they charge no cover. Of course my review may be tainted by the fact that I hate Techno because it makes me feel crazy. I barely finished one beer before I had to leave.

When I want to shake it, I am in it to win it. I do not want: to be grinded on by strangers, to be picked up on by randoms, to be jostled by the crowd, or to listen to a DJ get too creative with breaks that I can’t dance to. I do want: to dance as hard as I possibly can, to feel like the music cannot get any better and then it keeps getting better, to find fun people to dance with that are not creepy, to feel ok to look as dorky or sexy as I want to(I look plenty of both, believe it), to meet people who are cool and fun, to end the night feeling like I won it. Añu is my fave dance spot for the foregoing reasons.

I came to Añu to dance, and that is exactly what I did. While their dance floor was small — it could comfortable hold about 35 people — it was never crowded. I went on a Wednesday night, and there were already people there dancing when I arrived. The trance music just keep getting better as the night went on, and I was sad to leave. The floor was never empty, and all sorts were there, except douche bags. Not once did a guy come up and grind on me, or even do one rude thing. That was awesome. It was a nice lounge area, but the music was too loud to have a really comfortable conversation(even though I tried anyway). I ordered a cosmo, and it came back strong and wonderful at $ 8 per. Bartender was nice and I didn’t wait for more than four minutes or so for him to get to me, even though he was steadily busy throughout the night. It’s a nice, clean place, including bathrooms. The bathrooms were a pretty happening place. I did notice a few individuals go to the bathroom together a few times. I’m guessing some uppers, but who knows… Maybe they just like to gossip as they pee. So the good: great trance music, enough room to dance, nice people(no douche bags), AIRCONDITIONING, and good drinks The not so good: it’s so small. I know that I live in SF and I need to get used to the really small club scene, but had there been just 15 more people who wanted to dance… that would have been a problem. I’d give it four and a half stars if I could…

In a lot of ways, Añu is The Spot. If I feel like sneaking into a bar to have a drink on an off night, that’s the first place I think of. It’s as much like Cheers as you’ll find on 6th Street. The bartenders are good at what they do. People talk about the infused vodkas, and those are certainly good, but your average Jack & Coke will work out just fine, as well. Then, on Wednesdays, Añu gets as close to the center of the SFDJ Universe as any other bar in the city. It shines especially brightly considering its small size. Satellite SF, run by talented local DJ Scott Carrelli, has been bringing in the big names from around the city and(way) beyond its borders for a number of years now. The music is always good and the vibe is always tight. I’ve made so many friends there, and still catch up with them even today outside on the stoop, smokin’. In many ways, Añu has grown up around this party. What used to be a ktichen is now an expanded dance floor. And every year, a growing soundsystem upgrades the ambiance as well. Other nights at Añu are popular too. Every night, there’s a different style of music to suit your tastes, and those of your friends. There are comfortable bench couches towards the back, with small seats for big parties. And Scott Carrelli also does an 80’s night from time to time, just in case underground dance isn’t your thing. Añu is a haunt of mine in the city. It’s an axis my SF world revolves around, especially on Wednesdays. Check it out, buy a drink, and see how a small bar can be *kind of a big deal.* ;)

Añu is my nu favortie spot in the city. I gave it only 3 stars because I don’t want it to get to crowded, I know selfish. The house music is awesome. Bartenders…Quick like lightening. And Friendly! The drinks not to stiff, but not too weak either The scene lots opf hipsters. But friendly ones, not the ones who snap at poetry readings. And the girls were looking pretty good, and didn’t see any douche bag guys. No Marina types, no Russian hill /Snob Hill Types, no Marin garbage, no SJ asian drama or AP’s. Ah such a nice place to chill out.

Nice little spot on Dirty 6th St! From the outside, it looks like a dive, but on the inside, it’s pretty luxe with these interesting art/paintings on the walls. On a Thursday night, they had a happy hour special for margaritas, but there’s a great bar with a wide selection of liquors… including Old Potrero! Drinks weren’t too expensive(~$ 8), and the service was quick. There is lots of bar seating and small seats/tables on the side so it’s a good place to catch up with friends near the front of the bar… and dance(when there’s a DJ, I would guess) in the back.

Came here for the very first time last Wednesday night. Interesting place! I was so surprised to see that this place has more game than some bars & clubs combined on the weekends! By midnight, this place was pretty packed! Drinks were fairly priced. The bartender was attentive, prompt and efficient. My $ 8.00 Black Russian was pretty decent since I could taste the alcohol. The place is rather divey and small with a long hallway floorplan. The dance floor is pretty much nonexistent. I can only imagine how stuffy and crowded this place must be when renowned DJs come and spin their magic. Lighting is pretty dim with a long row of stools by the bar and a long booth by the dance floor. Beautiful, nicely lit bar with abundant of alcohol on display, I have to say. The only cons that I can think of is the $ 5 cover charge and the bathrooms are located near the DJ booths. You need to dodge through a crowd of people in order to reach your destination. So if you’re into house music and you happen to be in the city on a Wednesday night, check this place out!

Had a drink before dinner before Lebowskifest last night at Añu. I’ve been here many times, and usually it’s nice. It’s a cool, well appointed interior, a nice dance floor, a good looking bar. Usually there’s good music playing… But yesterday evening, for some reason they were calibrating their sound system with pink noise. For those who don’t know, while white noise consists of random frequencies, pink noise consists of every frequency played simultaneously and at a fixed amplitude. In this case, the amplitude was LOUD. And pink noise sounds like nothing so much as a 747. I said«Now I understand what it must be like to work on the tarmac — except those guys where ear protection!» Hey Añu — next time you calibrate your sound system, maybe do it BEFORE you open, instead of after? Thanks.

Well, I have one word for this place and it is Bryce. Whew, mama needs to sit down after seeing that beautiful specimen of a man, yum. But about the bar, it’s really cool. I didn’t really know what to expect walking in, but it’s definitely one of those places that has the shady looking exterior, but then once inside you are in a really nice looking space with cool lighting, great booze selections and DJs spinnin a happenin blend of tunage to sip your cocktail to. Definitely my favorite kind of bar. We stayed for a few hours and chatted about the world and the goofballs in it and as we were leaving, we got our comedy giggle for the evening as two douche bags walk into a bar and actually said the following, «Yeah, can we get 2 hurricanes?» To which the rockin bartendress held her internal«what the fuck?» laugh to herself and said, «Umm, wow, I haven’t made one of those since I was 16. What’s even in that? Sugar? Why don’t you just order a shot and be done with it? I mean, I don’t want you passin out on my bathroom floor» Awesome! 4 stars for her kickassness alone! Yeah, I’ll be back :)

Great divey bar to continue your Wednesday dancing/music thang after Minna closes at 10 pm. PART I — REVIEW(this part is skippable, just read PARTII& go here Wed 10pm-2am): A big crowd is usually here on Wed. eves., Añu being the default«go to» place to continue dancing/drinking for the the big Wed. Minna crowd that gets kicked out at 10 pm. 111 Minna closes at around that time on Wednesdays — and as Minna closes, after some stand around outside Minna yelling drunkenly, you can watch over half of the hundreds that were at Minna make an ant trail, snaking their way down Market/Mission/Muni and try to cram into Añu –(see my review on 111 Minna). The drinks at Añu are cheap, and the place is so dark that no one holds back in the back area dance floor. Let yourself go. PARTII — FISTFIGHTS, MAYHEM, CHASINGPEOPLEWITHSTICKS!(more interesting part): Caveat: This part of SF is dangerous at night. Be very careful if you go here. This is the first bar I’ve been to that I can remember seeing fights outside the bar as I entered the place at 10:30 pm, and 2 more fights when I left at 1:30 am! But you know what — some attractive people are mixed in with the scumfights. The wildness in the area is strangely attractive. Ever hear of the hot Hollywood actors who can have almost anyone they want, and they go hangin’ in the streets? Kinda like that… Actually the earlier fight was the highlight of the night. A big guy was actually chasing another guy down the street with a big piece of wood, yelling incoherently about how he shouldn’t have horsewhipped him, and he was gonna smack him upside the head with the piece of wood real good. But the piece of wood was like 20 feet long, way too long to really be a good weapon. It was hilarious, because the piece of wood was so heavy it slowed the dude down so much that the other dude was able to easily run away, turn around and make a few faces, but he was still scared and running! Good times! ah yaaas… horsewhips and chasing people through the dark city with huge pieces of wood… what is this, the 14th Century? Well, welcome to post-10pm 6th& Market Street, and yes as a matter of fact it is 13th C, punk! Come on now, be honest: when is the last time you saw an actual dude chasing another dude down the sidewalk with a 20 foot long 2×4 in his arms? Um??? Alrighty then. It was actually entertaining and a bit unnerving at the same time. High crime area. Cab it to and from this place, unless you live right in the neighborhood and know your way around here… even then… be careful. YouTube addicts: This place would be an excellent place to venture with your video camera at night, almost any night you can find some hilarious/scary action like the above going on. On second thought, don’t do it: you’d never make it back and become a YouTube star, because they’d torture&kill you for your video camera. Fun rowdy place, though. Don’t go here on a first date. If you come here, come hard… or stay home. :) 111 Minna(early 5−10pm) and to a lesser degree, Añu(later 10pm-2am) are among the better places to be on Wed. nights in SF for great House music & dancing– Minna & Añu may as well be joined at the hip, they are that tight of a pub-crawl pair for Wednesdays.

I love their selection of Vodka! That to me is one of the major reason I will vist this bar. The second would be to check out some Grime or Breaks. They have a small but nice dance floor. Their is a small DJ booth right on the dance floor. I find it great when I played past sets here. Mostly because everything is right there. I hate being away from the people who dance. So if you are a DJ, you’d like playing here. This place is not too big so be ready to fight your way around the bar, dance floor, and bathroom. I dig the overall feel of this club. You almost for get you’re on 6th street; not until you step outside to get some air and see a fight or some random crack head action. Naw you’ll be ok. I’ve been coming to Añu for years. Its a solid place!

Yay for study breaks! Yay for birthday parties! Yay for not having to buy drinks all night! YAY Añu! So a few of my friends happen to DJ and work the door at Añu on the regular so it makes me a little bit partial and a whole lot spoiled. Cute little place in SOMA which means it gets it’s share of «characters» but I still stand by my prediction that if you add enough cool places like this then eventually SOMA will gentrify. So GENTRIFY damn you! I’m getting tired of walking in urine.
