Great 80s Dance Parties When They Occur SITREP Of late, this has become a sporadic dance event, but it is always a great time to come to San Francisco and hit the Barracuda Party @ The Minna Gallery. SETUP Located in downtown San Francisco, the Barracuda 80s Decade Dance Party is a wonderful complement to other stalwart 80s Dance events, such as New Wave City, and Thursday 80s Night @ The Cat Club. DIFFERENTPEEPS One BIG difference, however, is that the crowd is much different than what I see at the Cat Club. Lots of people tend to become loyal to certain venues and I will notice a lot of the same people at New Wave City and Thursday 80s Night at Cat Club. So I love the fact that I can go to Barracuda and make a lot of NEW friends that I may not mix with in SOMA venues such as Cat Club and/or DNA Lounge. TIMING However, I’ve noticed of late that Barracuda — depending on venue and/or resident DJ availability — is not as regular as it has been in the past(2010, 2011 for example), and so I hope that I will see some new flyers posted for upcoming events. If not, it will remain a wonderful positive dance memory for me. THELOWDOWN Barracuda provides a most excellent NEWTAKE on the 80s Dance Scene.

This was a really fun night!(Just went lat night). I would recommend this to anyone. Some info that is hopefully useful: My friends and I dressed up, but not everyone did. You’d be comfortable either way. Free makeup and hair ROCKED. The make up girl, however, asked for a $ 10 donation. I said, «What’s the donation for?» and she said, «Me.» Classy. Free photo booth — very fun! The music was great! What a fun, nostalgic dance mix! Parking was difficult, but not impossible. There are a few parking garages nearby. Free mini cupcakes everywhere! There’s a coat check for $ 2.00, and the cover charge was $ 10. I paid in cash. I have no clue if they take cards. There was a very friendly feeling — mixed ages. I think anyone who likes 80s dancing would be comfortable here. It’s a cool studio, too. The art exhibit on display last night was, in my opinion, pornographic(and I was an art history MAJOR!), but I just ignored it and danced. Be sure to check this place out!

Me and my homegirl Farah S. hit up this place after watching Kevin Bacon and Sarah Jessica Parker and who can forget John Lithgow, in Footloose to get in the mood for the 80’s and to pick up some dance moves to break out for the dance-off competition at midnight. I can’t get that Flash dance«She’s a maniac» out of my head! We tore up the dance floor with our crew and danced the night away! Leg warmers, neons, madonna goth… we had great costumes and loved seeing others dressed up.

I went here last Saturday with a large group of friends and had a great time dancing until they closed. The DJ played awesome throwback tunes, it was a large but not overly claustrophobic-y feeling crowd. Everyone was there for celebrating — not a whole lot of attitude that San Francisco clubs often have. A lot of people dressed up(most of my crowd) which gave it a super fun costume party vibe. Of course, there were craploads of balloons too which just added to the party mood. Everyone was smiling, laughing, singing, dancing the whole night. A few friends had a birthday there and we were able to reserve a nice seating area in the front, which was nice to have — they do a bottle of vodka and some mixers and water for private parties which got things rolling. A nice touch. The only reason I have not given it 5 stars is because the fashion show was supposed to have been local designers doing *original fashions*(or at least that’s what it says on their web site) and someone sent a version of the vintage reissue Vogue 2354 pattern down the runway. I’m probably the only person in the whole place who even knew that, but it’s a commercial pattern — that ain’t original.

Barracuda always makes me feel happy. The 80’s were a great decade and I love getting all nostalgic thinking about those sweet wonder years… 111MInna is the spot and it always a good time when Barracuda rolls around at that time of the month. I love the vibe. Imma kinda done wid da hip/hop scene. Too many wannabe insecure thugs and idiots tryin to hard to be hard. Imma cool wid throwing down and kickin ass, but not on my day off. haha. Not one bad attitude in the place. 80’s hip hop+rock+drinks=good times.

Don’t stop believin’ that the decade of decadence isn’t over! You can dance, for inspiration, come on! This monthly dance party is the perfect remedy for your night clubbin’ ennui, or lack of motivation for physical activity. I think I worked off about a gazillion Thanksgiving calories. Barely took any breaks. You wanna just dance to fun, silly old ‘80s music? You’re not alone! I thought I was in for another cliched theme party, but this party put me in the mood to get into the groove. You can’t not shake it on the dance floor. The 3 DJs offer a variety of 80’s New Wave, Metal, Hip Hop and pop. If you don’t have the right outfit, don’t fret, they offer free hair and make-up stylings right by the bar! The night we went there were several breakers, even a couple young women breakin’ in 5 inch heels! So impressive! 111 Minna Gallery is the perfect venue because it’s spacious, the service is friendly and they have not one, but two bars. $ 5 cover before 10 pm. Otherwise it’s $ 10. Not bad for a very fun night.
