The place is decent but low selection and not the greatest feel. Not as welcoming as I would like. Decent but I think there are better around.

Yo I’m not a vinyl collector nor do I own a record player, but if I did, I’d be here all the time as they had an absurd collection of 80’s and disco records at even more absurdly low prices. They even had a couple of turntables with headphones, meaning you could sample the products? I hope so, because who doesn’t like hearing the crackle of vinyl every now and then?

Honestly. .. .I don’t know what all the hype is about.… Maybe I’m just not into the type of stuff they carry.. . It was a lot of Soul, used House/Trance records. The Rock section didn’t have any artist individually named. .. . well. .. maybe just a few. But a very very limited selection. I am glad it has a following. I hate to see any record store loosing business to online retailers or shitty Best Buy. I will definitely go back. I really liked what they were playing(some bluegrass tunes) and they were very nice.

This place is choice. I came here after looking for an alternative to Amoeba — as much as I love that store, I was looking for a smaller, more intimate record store this time around. I have nothing but good things to say about Black Pancake. I had my eye on 12″ disco cuts, and man did Black Pancake deliver, with productions from Larry Levan, Tom Moulton, Walter Gibbons, and Cerrone, among others. I have to say that after going through their selection, Black Pancake has some of the choicest disco cuts around, but they have a pretty solid dance/electronic selection in general, and if your into other genres(rock, reggae, dub, hip-hop, jazz) they got that too. Manny, one of the clerks, was super helpful during my 4+ hour dig, throwing along my way a boatload of great cuts that I ultimately took home. I rarely get that kind of knowledgeable service at record stores, and it was greatly appreciated. Also, check out their website — the staff has put up some really good and eclectic mixes for your listening pleasure!

I love this store. Although this store is small, they have a nice collection of both used and new vinyl, super friendly & helpful staff, two listening stations, and a very convenient location in lower haight. BPR also has some good sales from time to time — I recently picked up a bunch of records during a storewide 30% off sale. They also have a nice website that you should check out!
