Want an extraordinary evening with talented flamenco and other Latin cultural elite? Like adventure? Like dance? Come one, come all, and see Carolina and Carole and their merry band of friends, colleagues, masters and proteges put on an intimate, extroverted, casually professional bombast of a flamenco show that will have you smilin’ an’ profilin’ and itching to dance. You’ll find them on weekends at Pena Pechamama in North Beach, an exciting demi-cave of Bolivian/Salvadoran soul in its own right, with yummy vegan(yes, you heard right!) fare and the best sangria in the Bay Area. In the words of the late, great Don Cornelius(himself a flamenco fan – who knew!), «Betcha last money, ‘s gonna be a stone gas, honey!»

For my 60th birthday, my family treated me to an evening out to dinner in Chinatown followed by Carolina Lugo’s and Carole Acuna’s Ballet Flamenco at Pena Pachamama. What a wonderful evening. The club’s intimate setting and the warmth of other patrons close by added to the overall ambience. It’s an atmosphere where the audience and the performers can feel the energy of both. As a person involved in theater, that is an extra treat. I like feeling part of the performance, contributing to the passion and heat of the performers who feed off that energy. And feed off it they do. Carolina and Carole-mother and daughter — stand on their own and as a team. Both exude power, grace and suppleness, and with flamenco Maestra Carolina Lugo, a self-assured majesty that time and life deliver. As a mature woman, I loved watching both for their interplay of both youth and experience feeling empowered by the pure beauty of their dance. Carolina is a master of castanets. Please go if nothing else, for that. But the music, the musicians the songs and the rhythms are captivating and not to be missed. If you are vegan or vegetarian, the restaurant serves your needs. There’s wine and beer, sangria and champagne, which for Valentine’s Day, or any romantic evening out, this show at $ 15, is the ticket. My nephew paid the Ballet Flamenco the ultimate compliment of planning a date night there. So if you see him, Carolina and Carole, work their last nerves! An unforgettable evening.
