I was so sad to hear this business closed. The owners were two wonderful people who ALWAYS fed people regardless if they had money or not. They truly cared for their Senior customers who gathered there more for a place to go and sit with other Seniors. If Violet(one of the Owners had not seen them in a few days, she started worrying and would start asking around till she knew they were safe .) Outside of the kindness of Phil and. Violet the owners the food at the Chicken Coop rocked. It was not fancy good. Just down home Hofbrau rotisserie BBQ chicken, Ribs. Roast beef, Turkey, Ham. They would make it all there and fresh. Sandwiches, soup, mashed and baked potatoes a yummy homemade green salad. You would get a ton of good down home cooking food for a very reasonable price. You could not help but feel like you stopped by your Moms house to eat . Sadly, after being there over 30 years they were forced out by a greedy landlord who wanted to increase their rent so they could no longer afford to do business. These two hardworking husband and wife work but out if business and literally forced to close their door OVERNIGHT. I cried when I went their the next day and saw the sign and observed the owner in tears inside clearing her things out. It was heartbreaking. I hope the owner of this property gets the extra money he/she was looking for. This place had now been empty 4 months. The couple who ran it over 30 years unemployed. The public who loved them and their food sad. The seniors who relied on them ?? The homeless who relied on them for food ??? So, landlord, hope you get a new tenant soon who can give you that big fat roll of cash you want. And hope you can sleep well at night counting you extra cash. Shame on you!!!

I was so sad, bummed and pissed off when I stood infront of the door and noticed it was closed down. Then I found out it’s because another greedy landlord. Do landlords really think about the community? Absolutely NOT. Karma-Landlords. Now this place was an absolutely awesome for the Seniors in Community to go get a great tasting meal and not emptying out their pockets. Where will they go to now? Not just the Seniors, but families, hard working people. ME! I would like to thank Phil & Violet for all the great meals I’ve eaten there these past years. Their smiles! I will miss them and the food they provided. :(

I was mortified when I learned today that the Coop would be closing due to the greed of yet another landlord. Another neighborhood institution will be biting the dust. Where will all the senior citizens go now? Where will all the families get their meals? The singles and working people pick up lunches and dinners at decent prices? And what of Phil and Violet who have spent their lives in the neighborhood feeding us all and raising their family working hard and long hours? Thank you so much great landlords. Now, no more great sandwiches, chicken, turkey legs, ribs… Obviously, I am sad. I grew up and that food and take my kids their today… No more because of greed… So sad. .

Aah, the Tommy’s Joynt of Excelsior. I was so worried about leaving the Tenderloin, cause every once and awhile you need some good carved meat to keep you going. The décor is really cool. Legit diner booths that haven’t been updated since the 60’s. The sandwich was good and a good price. It was a little bready for me, so I piled up all the meat on one side and ate that. The meat was tender, but seemed a little less flavorful than Tommy’s. If you’re in you’re 30’s you’ll likely be youngest person in there by about 30 years. And their hours prove it – it’s definitely for the early-bird special crowd. So if you want a pastrami sandwich at 1:30AM you’ll have to look elsewhere. Minor complaints aside, I love this place, and will be going back soon.

Really good comfort food. I can’t say that I was blown away BUT I was very satisfied with what I had. If you want simple food with out all the extra fancy stuff that takes away from the food at most places nowadays, this is a great spot.

Wanted so badly to love this place! Stepping in there made me feel like I was in a time warp! I really liked how old school everything felt in there, the food itself looked awesomely home made, and it was literally cute little mom and pop making and serving the food too! So what fell short? Pretty much everything was just OK — not bad but also absolutely no reason to come back… not even if I happen to be walking by.

This is a great family-owned joint with good food for an excellent price. I ordered the turkey sandwich, served on soft, freshly-cut bread and mozzarella. As tends to be the case with turkey, the dark meat was tasty and the white a little bit on the dry side. But it was still made with the right amount of lettuce, tomato, and mayo to make it super tasty. Simple flavors done well, the kind of sandwich that your grandparents would make you after Thanksgiving. The sandwich was HUGE, and could have easily served two people — $ 6. Add a side of potato salad that could also be split for two, and you haven’t even broken the $ 10 mark yet. I will most definitely be coming back.

There’s reasons to like a hofbrau like Chicken n Coop. All the comfort foods that are offered which include roast beef, corned beef, turkey, ham, and pastrami. The dinner rolls, mashed potatoes, Mac & Cheese, and salads drenched in dressing. And on top of that, no wait time for food. How it works at Chick n Coop: You choose a meal from the menu. The grumpy guy behind the counter grabs a giant spoon, slaps your order onto a thick off-white cafeteria plate that looks like it would survive a nuclear holocaust. Then the indestructible plate is put on a plastic tray with a side of choice and usually a drink. Then the not-so-friendly lady rings it up at the register. What we ordered: ¼ chicken with mashed potato and salad: the taste and quality is satisfactory. Similar to the satisfactory mark my teachers used to give me on my report card regarding my behavior at school. I wasn’t bad as hell, but I definitely wasn’t excellent either. Same as this food. Pastrami sandwich: the pastrami was dry, firm, and flavorless. It was so bad I felt like dipping my sandwich in my diet coke, but instead I went back to the counter and asked for some au jus. The sandwich falls in between two categories, «bammer» and«what the heezy».(Urban dictionary for reference if needed) I however do like the hofbrau ambiance. Old booth styled mind-your-own-business seating. No community tables to worry about here. The couple that runs this place need a hug or inspirational words of encouragement because they aren’t too happy. But I imagine that the light bulb heater keeping the cafeteria food warm would put me in a bad mood too after a while. The types of food they serve are great however the service and food quality make me want to «fly the coop».

The woman who I assume is the owner is a sweetheart; the man who serves the meats and may be her hubby is not much of a charmer. She is also very kind and my friends and i all like her because she makes us feel welcome and she appreciates her customers. The food is very tasty and I love that I can have a nice turkey dinner whenever I’m craving a taste of Thanksgiving; although I may ask if they would consider offering stuffing and cranberry sauce on their menu? The atmosphere reminds me of the hofbraus my grandmother used to take us to as a child and I love it.

I live within walking distance of this place so I wanted it to be good — I really, really did — but it’s not. The mac n’ cheese was nasty. It had way too much salt and the macaroni was over cooked to the point of sogginess. In fact, I later found that even slight cooling of the mac n’ cheese would cause it to become a gelatinous glob that takes the shape of whatever container it is held in. Ick! The rottisere chicken was okay but, oddly, some of the meat was actually dry even though the surface, after peeling off the skin, looked juicy. The wings was completely dried out to a jerkey like texture. The baked potato was cheap(only $ 1.50 if purchased plain — $ 2.50 if served with a butter mixture) and it is the only thing I would probably get again if forced to come here but I think I could have achieved the same results cooking my potato in the microwave. The people there, though, were really nice so it made me extra sad that I wouldn’t be revisiting this place. The interior is a cross between an elementary school cafeteria and an old diner. I guess others find this place nostalgiac but since I didn’t grow up eating at this place, I didn’t have the same rose-colored glasses on and saw the place as old and dingy.

Absolutely love this place. I spent the first 20 years of my life in this neighborhood so of course I would be biased. I find all of the food great, but the chicken is my favorite. SF needs more places like this. This is probably the only neighborhood left in the city where an establishment like this could thrive. The excelsior is still very much like when I was growing up and like I left it in 90′. Unpretentious, very diverse and working class.

My mom and dad have been coming here ever since I was in my momma’s womb and that’s a long time! Chick N Coop has been around for 35 years so it definitely has that old school diner type of feel to it. The people working are very friendly and know my grandpa(who is a regular) by name. I came here one afternoon with my grandpa and my mom. I ordered a quarter rotisserie chicken with mashed potatoes while my grandpa ordered a quarter rotisserie chicken with cabbage and carrots. They both came with a large piece of bread and a choice of salad or soup. The chicken — The skin was way too salty for my taste. The chicken itself was good though! The mashed potatoes — Dry, dry, dry! It tasted like it came out of a box! They were also cold and dry. The macaroni salad — My second favorite item next to the bread. It was a little but on the watery side, but it was okay! The bread — Loved it! Lol it was a huge piece of french bread that was nice and chewy. The total was $ 15 which wasn’t that bad for the portions. I could definitely get a better meal elsewhere but I’m giving this place 3 stars simply because the owners(?) know my grandpa by face and that to me, is priceless.

Totally love the old school vibe, the family that owns it are great, the SF history that is documented on the walls is cool, the prices are right and the portions are huge… but the food sucks. Sorry, but its true. I’ll still go there(for all the above reasons) but its usually on nights when I’m starving, tired and broke. Its perfect for that. But its not great. Absolutely avoid the ribs and beef. They are grossly fatty, Almost inedible. The turkey is dry and the lasagna(an exaggeration) has cinnamon in it. WTF? But the chicken is safe, edible and a big step above KFC(which doesn’t say much). I like the green salad that is swimming in dressing(think vinegar with a crunch), but I am weird that way.

CASHONLY. I’ve walked by this place countless of times, and never once ever thought of going in to eat until a couple of days ago. It’s cafeteria style, they have a menu posted up on the wall– you tell them what you want and they serve it right in front of you. At 3:30pm and off their Dinner plate menu, I ordered the ¼ Chicken with or without barbecue sauce, it comes with mash potatoes and gravy, bread and butter, and your choice of salad or vegetables. In total including a $ 1.00 drink, everything came out to exactly $ 8.25. Not bad at all, because it’s a plateful. Note: IF you order their ¼ chicken, you wont always have the choice of which part of the chicken you’ll get. They will give you what ¼ of the chicken is left, it can be either the breast or the leg and thigh. There’s also a sign stating this. Their chicken is good, so it doesn’t matter. But for only $ 3 more you can get the ½ chicken and you get breast leg and thigh. Their service is quick and they are friendly. I like the booths and the feel of stepping into something a few decades ago. They also serve breakfast, so I’ll have to return for that.

I love pillowy mounds of Mashed Potatoes as much as, if not more than, Uncle Phil. This place has ridiculously mouth-watering mashed potatoes! When I get here for lunch once every few weeks, my carnivore comrade gets one of their huge(roasted on-site daily) turkey sandwiches(on freshly baked bread) and a side for $ 6.99. I’m not the most frequent animal-flesh consumer so I generally get the side mashed potatoes & gravy, side salad(w/too much oily dressing– my one and only complaint) and a huge roll. SOGOOD! The Greek owners never seem to rest or leave the restaurant, they work so bloody hard and it shows in the quality of the food they produce.

Simply the best«hofbrau» style food I think in the entire Bay Area. The Chick N Coop is a dying breed of restaurant like another reviewer had said… San Francisco has way too many«upscale» yuppie trash restaurants. Chick N Coop is all about just down to earth good quality comfort food. The meats are all exceptionally delicious, the sides are great, and the sandwiches are huge. I’m surprised nobody mentioned the rice pudding, I always liked the rice pudding a lot. Here’s an interesting thing I wanted to share about this place: while my Chinese grandpa was still alive, my parents took him to the Chick N Coop and it was probably the only«American» restaurant he ever liked. How’s that for a testament to quality? I haven’t been able to drop by lately because I’m working in China. but I know the first place I’m going to hit up when I’m back in the Bay is the Chick N Coop. The owners are the parents of a good friend of mine, and they really pour their heart and soul into this establishment. I really feel like the Chick N Coop IS the landmark of Excelsior Mission hands down. I recommend the Chicken Dinners and the sandwiches if you’re on a budget. It is impossible to leave this place without being stuffed!

Yo, Adrian! Finally a San Francisco hofbrau worthy of a Bronx cheer. It’s like an East Coast eatery you’d fine near a big retirement home… but hey, I’m not picky about décor when it comes to good eats. Good thing since it is a complete throwback to post-WWII cafeterias where you see all the food they serve in front of you — lots of highly buffed, timeworn sea green naugahyde booths, bouquets of plastic flowers on each table, carpeting that looks like it hasn’t been replaced since the Kennedy administration, and overhead menu signs that look to be of the same vintage. A Greek couple runs the place, but only the wife speaks English. The husband carves the meat when he is not snapping at his wife in Greek. No worries… she snaps right back. I had a $ 5.99 Roast Beef Sandwich on a French Roll. The slices were hot, juicy and thick with lots of au jus. The bread was nice and chewy, and long with the fresh tomato and lettuce and a glob of mayo, it was a carnivore’s delight. I wanted to get the soup of the day but they were already out by 2PM, so I went for their house salad — definitely fresh though a bit drowned in oil and vinegar. Lots of sides including mac-n-cheese, mixed veggies and even jello. They have lots of hot plates and a $ 6.99 lunch special that comes with soup or salad and coffee or iced tea. You can even get two whole rotisserie chickens for $ 12.99. So get in line to get a tray and park yourself in a booth. But not the big one in the middle. It’s reserved for bigger parties… or maybe they’re saving it for the Godfather. FOOD — 4 stars… lots and lots of hot meat… and it isn’t even a nightclub AMBIANCE — 3 stars… are we in Brooklyn? SERVICE — 4 stars… made to order TOTAL — 4 stars… hofbrau choices are so sparse in health-friendly SF that you know you have to come here… it’s ok, I won’t tell
