I know this place was sketchy before I walked in. I have seen police here all the time, and recently someone busted the window. But I needed to do laundry elsewhere, and this was closer than my usual spot. Before I start I want to point out that this happened during the day at about 1PM. I walked in, looked around, and I thought it all sounded good. 4 bucks for a triple load — deal! .25 for 8 minutes in the dryer(which incidentally is really really hot, and dries fast). AND the coin machine worked(which surprised me). I had just started my wash when I noticed the police walk in. They walk over to a man covered in blood. I can’t believe I hadn’t noticed him immediately. He had just been jumped by three people. Okay, yeah bad start. Had I noticed him beforehand, I probably would’ve gone elsewhere but my load was in. I figured there would be transients about, and I figured they might be on crack, but I didn’t imagine I’d be harassed as much as I was. Of course, after the police left, a crackhead came in and trapped me in a corner by squatting in front of me to smoke crack. He proceeded to sexually harass me, asking if he could perform certain sexual acts on me. I told him no, and asked him to leave me alone. A few minutes later his friends walk in, and borrow his pipe to smoke crack. They kind of harass me too, asking why I looked so scared and terrified. I joke that it’s more a look of disgust and discomfort. They all leave, and throughout my time people come in and smoke crack, and a few people check driers for clothes. Eventually the crackhead that sexually harassed me comes back. And as I’m on the phone I can feel him eyeing me. A few minutes later he reveals himself and starts touching himself. I call 911, explain the situation. He hears me and bolts. I know a lot of reviewers some to dismiss the crackheads, but I really want to warn you guys that these aren’t your typical San Francisco crackheads. They’re aggressive, mean, and dangerous. All this happened in the span of an hour and a half, and when I talked to the owner who stopped by earlier he mentioned that the police get calls daily about this place. This means that nothing is being done as far as safety. If you go here, please, please, please do not go alone. Or make sure there’s a handful of people who are actually doing laundry here. To reiterate, the window is still boarded, so that means if someone is standing in front of the door, no one outside has a view of you. I’ve lived in san francisco for five years, and I have never, until today felt unsafe.

So, despite my last review, I still do laundry here. Overall, it’s not terrible, or maybe I’ve just become accustomed to it. In the later evening hours, there are usually crackheads in here, smoking crack or doing other shady stuff in the back row of washers. It can be a little uncomfortable. But on the other hand, there are always machines free, most of them work, and my clothes come out clean and dry in about an hour and 15 minutes. The owner is really nice, and when he’s there(usually to close up), he does his best to keep the riff raff out. Then again, one of the last times I was there, someone took a dump in a washing machine. The jury might still be out on this one.

I had the most terrifying experience at this place. Went to do my laundry in the afternoon hours and everything seamed fine until a guy showed up there, without any laundry, took off his pants and started masturbating in front of everyone. and i believe that wasn’t his first time at this place. there were no managers on site so some people felt free to smoke inside. i felt so scared that barely could wait for my laundry to be done so i could get out of there as soon as possible. i literally wanted to re-do my laundry after i left this place. and they also don’t have any dry-cleaning in general, it could be a great place if at least there was a manager around to control all jerkin-offs.

Not so scary. My first time at a laundromat. Go in, wash and dry your clothes, and get out in less then an hour and a half. I did two loads all cost less then $ 10. Wash can be anywhere from $ 2.50−3.00 Dry about $ 1.50 depending on how dry you want your clothes.

639 Hyde Street — Ed the Laundromat Manager of Coin-Op Laundromat — What a good thing it is to get some clean clothes. It leaves a fella with the feeling that anything is possible. There are, however, urban laundromat horror stories that could turn a person against the very idea of stuffing their clothes into a sack and trudging through the shuffling masses of malcontents just to watch junkies dropping their rigs and blood all over the floors of these neccessary establishments for the common good. Believe me when I tell you, as an SF urbanite, I have paid witness to the foul stench of animals holding up in the darkened corners of certain un-name-able joints ’round this city. Sweet Mother of God, have I ever. Thus said, it shouldn’t come as a shock when I say I have seen the perfect laundromat and it is located at 639 Hyde Street(between Post and Geary). A simple blue and white sign reads: Coin-Op Laundromat and Ed is the keeper. The red brick exterior suggest a sturdy space. Ceramic tiles on the floor are generally pretty clean(as can be expected in a heavily trafficked location). Faux wood paneling and 2×4 struts keep the interior humble and reduce the overhead of the operation. Ed passes the savings on to the customer. I’m a penny pincher by nature so I don’t mind telling you, this place has the most economical load you can find around Union Square or the TL. Besides if you’re trying to get a load washed and dried for less than $ 3.00(USD) you probably won’t mind having a gathering of half naked, junked out, mutant, freaks sweating and banging all over the tables and crawlspaces while your folding your underwear into crisp little triangles. But try this one out for a break from the usual crap. Ed is cool. He’ll make your change. He’ll buy your soap! He has even been known to watch your laundrybag while you run around the corner to get a coffee. —I’m friendly to friendly people.- This is Ed’s motto. He’s one of the good ones.
