It’s odd to write a 5-​star review for San Francisco’s Department of Public Health. If we hold the DPH to the letter of their mission to «optimize the health and well-​being» of the citizens of this city, then there’s no better sign of their failure than the sorry state of the Tenderloin, Civic Center, and the whole rest of downtown. It’s gross and bio-​hazardous out there.
But I’ve now had three office visits to 101 Grove and have left each one impressed with the staff’s competence, friendliness and, *gasp* efficiency. First trip was to the immunization office before a vacation to a country with malaria. The nurses were great. Last two trips have been to get birth certificates from the Vital Records office. Both times I was in and out in less than twenty minutes. PS – Make sure you check out their website before going so that you can print and fill out the necessary paperwork.

I know. Why am I reviewing the DPH? Seriously? I needed a copy of my birth certificate. I called the city of SF at 10:55pm on a Tuesday. They picked up and e-​mailed me the application. For a 2-​week-​turnaround I can mail in a notarized form, or I can come by between 8 and 4… the problem is I work down the peninsula til 3. Hmmm. So I booked it up to the city and got there at 3:40. Crap. Parking? Drove around. No street parking. Performing Arts Garage. 3^rd floor. [$ 2.50 for the hour, a bout what you’d throw into a meter any way] and then a jog to the DPH. We were parked about 3:43, so let’s say we got to the DPH 3:45 at best. Last call is 3:50. We were out of there with my birth certificate by 3:54. Impressive. Then we went to go find a happy hour in Lower Haight/​Hayes Valley. No luck, but ah well.

I applaud the decision of SF Department of Public Health for bringing back The Healthy Penis! Imagine waking up this morning, browsing through the Chronicle and surprise a topic that I truly believe in and even better, a cause that I can actually get behind. More than a utilitarian appendage and something to be envious over, the penis should be cared for just as we care for our general health.
