Elite Event: So You Think You Can DJ

Feedback on my «DJ» lesson!
It’s been a while since I had this much fun on a weekday night. I was already pumped when I learned I was one of the lucky people chosen to take part in a night of mixing lessons presented by DJ Chucky, and that just carried over right into the event.
Although I knew a few things going in, I appreciated that he started things off with the basics — ⁴⁄₄ time, music theory, principles of beat matching — because it allowed me to realize that there was a lot of stuff I thought I knew but I really didn’t. From there, it was great getting a crash course into all of the various types of equipment that DJs use. As someone who would love to start up DJ’ing as a hobby someday soon, this was a great way to demystify all of the technology for me.
As for the lesson itself, my favorite part hands down was getting the chance to beat match on the Pioneer set. I’ve always wanted to try this out, so it was cool how Chucky broke everything down and walked us through step-​by-​step how to fade songs in and out, both with headphones and without. I felt like overall I got a really good foundation that I could very easily build off of through further instruction or practice at home, which is all you can really ask for.
Looking back — it’s crazy how much we were able to pick up from Chucky in only an hour’s time. He’s right when he says he only needs about four hours of instruction to make someone into a full-​fledge DJ — his approach to teaching really allowed for everyone to pick things up quickly.
And of course — loved the pizza and beer! Just a great, one-​of-​a-​kind experience, and I have no one to thank besides the great people at Unilocal (h/​t Abby) and the notorious DJ Chucky himself!

Really fun event! I’m so glad I did it. The studio was a bit hard to find at 9pm because it’s in the middle of an alley, but when you walk inside it’s a nice open space. Chucky is an amazing instructor! He took his time to explain the history of music and DJing. And it was really fun to actually learn how to use the equipments and turn tables. He was very clear in his instructions that even a klutz like me could understand and follow. Thanks for the great experience! I’d definitely recommend Washburn Studio and Chucky Brown!

Learning how to DJ was an absolute dream come true! And there was no one better to learn with than Chucky!
The studio has everything you could possibly need to DJ– records galore, and even a dance floor if you’re really feelin it.
I loved how the lesson started out with some music theory as that really allowed me to fully understand why we were doing what we were doing and will probably prevent dumb mistakes in the future if somehow I continue to DJ in my spare time (in my dreams).
Even though we had a larger group than I believe is usually offered in one hour sessions, we each had an opportunity to try our hands at everything. I would have loved even more time to practice scratching but I realize we only had a limited amount of time. Considering that, I do think we learned quite a lot for an hour as Chucky was great at moving us along at the perfect pace throughout.
Overall, super fun and unique event! Thanks Chucky and Abby for making my dreams of djing come true!

The DJ Instructions at Washburn Studios are performed by Chucky. He does a great job of introducing and explaining the basics of music and how that relates to the world of DJing. The hands-​on instruction on the controller and the turn tables is great and you end up learning a lot.

Lucky to be one of a select few for an hour DJ and mixing session. Chucky’s relaxed yet thorough teaching style made the language of music easier to translate.
Before we knew it all hour of us were beat matching and ready to take a party to the next level. Impossible without the wisdom and insight from Mr. Brown himself.
Just loved it.
